Debbie Stabenow started out in 1975 on the Board of Commissioners in a small Michigan county, then served in the state House of Representatives, then in the Michigan Senate, then in the U.S. House of Representatives, and since 2001 she’s been a U.S. Senator. Yesterday she announced that she’s gonna retire in January 2025, in her 50th year of doing this grueling stressful government work. In any normal country, the whole Congress would give her a standing ovation, thank her for her service, treat her like a war hero for sacrificing her life to be at the beck and call of American citizens. Instead, here’s Mike Berg, spokesman for the Republican Party: “This could be the first of many Democrats who decide to retire rather than lose.” Fifty years, Mike! Fifty fucking years.
