Introducing The Patron Series - Part 1

Hi folks, and welcome to the very first episode of the Clickspring Patron Series. A new and exclusive series of project videos created specifically to say "Thank You" to the Clickspring Patrons.

The first project in the series is this excellent little hand vise. It's a cool looking little tool, and a great addition to any home shop.

The associated drawings will be published with each episode (see links above), much like you would see with a serialised build in a magazine, so at the end of the project you will have a complete set of dimensioned drawings to build your own if you would like to do so.

As a further thank you, you are all in the draw for one Patron to win the completed tool at the end of the build. More about that later, but for now please enjoy the video!

Cheers,

Chris.

G'day Chris, Mill arrived today bit bigger than anticipated :) still waiting on email for lathe Grrr. Booked a weeks holiday next month so said mill is gonna get a workout. I thank you for inspiring me to take this route. G

Graeme Brumfitt

My newish blue lathe is a Weiss WM250VF, so it sounds like it might be the same machine? Very capable, well made. A bit more detail in this video: <a href="https://www.patreon.com/posts/tools-glorious-6-19145928">https://www.patreon.com/posts/tools-glorious-6-19145928</a> I picked up a MT4 collet chuck from Gloster Tooling

Gday Chris, Only just caught this set of vids! Thanks for sharing "TFS" mate, have finely gotten round to selling one of my motorbikes so now have the money and room for a lathe :-) Looking @ a Warco WM250V with Delta inverter drive with AC induction motor, (any thoughts) think it ticks all the boxes apart from the MT3, it's a MT4 so spose I'll have to find a mill with same :-( anyway again thanks for your time AND superb effort in making these vids, all the best G.

Graeme Brumfitt

Thank you mate, terrific to have you on board :)

When I signed up today I was hoping that the Patreon only vids would be at least half as good as the ones on YouTube. I didn't expect them to be the same. Thanks for sharing, Chris. Amazing work!

Glen Ralph

Fantastic- thanks!

Willy Demis

Hey Willy, terrific to have you on board mate :) There is a bit more detail on the sanding sticks here: <a href="https://youtu.be/uTAd1cJyqp4" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/uTAd1cJyqp4</a> and for files, I use only Swiss made Grobet - You can buy them from a few places, fwiw I get mine from here: <a href="http://www.artcotools.com/grobet-needle-files/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.artcotools.com/grobet-needle-files/</a>

New here and enjoying the extra content. I wondered if you could spare the time for two quick questions: 1) The sanding stick you used to polish the cone while it was in the lathe- what was that? Looked very effective! 2) Speaking of effective, in all your videos I've thought you have the best files. They always seem to cut effortlessly. Can you comment on what brand/pattern file you prefer? Thanks!

Willy Demis

Terrific to have you on board Bill :)

Watching your YouTube channel and seeing the teaser for this tool enticed me to pledge $3/month. Looking forward to watching all of your cool videos. I'm teaching myself machining and recently purchased a milland bench top 8.5x20 lathe. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!

Bill Yester

Oh, polyurethane. Still quite presentable!

Jeremy TENORIO

Thank you very much Nick, I will check them out. Terrific to have you on board mate :)

Hey Chris awesome video like always. Thank you. I'm an R&D machinist and have tested several different chipbreakers from several companies. Chip control is so critical especially on an open lathe where its not only tool life but safety that's at stake. I have no affiliation with Ingersol but I do turn to this "PC" style chipbreaker for almost everything. They have an awesome wide range of DOC that will still break a chip. I don't cut O1 very often but they work well in 4140, 410SS and 17-4PH <a href="http://www.ingersoll-imc.com/external/Landing/t-turn-pc-chipbreaker.htm" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.ingersoll-imc.com/external/Landing/t-turn-pc-chipbreaker.htm</a> If you get a chance give them a try. Thanks again! Nick

Thank you Matt, terrific to have your support mate :)

Only 50 likes.......well that sucks monkey nuts...... I'll not get on my soapbox about youtube but damn Chris you make the best video's. Educational and inspiring, perfect pace and content. Unmissable

Matthew Sykes

Understood, thanks for sharing the info Samuel, and thanks for your support here on Patreon, very much appreciated :)

With inserts your depth of cut is determined by the nose radius. I go with a min of 2/3 radius as a starting point. For example a .016 inch radius tool my depth of cut would be at least .012.

Samuel Irons

Ok so Plans purchased, next step get off the pot and find a lathe!

Ian

I'll be blaming you for my next hobby. Thanks.

philth pig

In the US, you can source similar (but not avendiarnau) handles from ENCO. Page 287 of their master catalog.

Kenneth Klose

Terrific to have you on board Ian :)

I saw a George Daniels Neflix Doco a couple of weeks back and was inspired to look further, a week later and I found your site! I can't get enough of your videos, great work and always informative. Now I just need to find a place to set up a workshop so I can get after some of these great projects

Ian

awesome

kevin todd

Hey Antony, yes I think you're right regarding the wire. I get the handles from my local jewellers supplies store <a href="http://jewellerssupplies.com.au/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://jewellerssupplies.com.au/</a> The center holes are a bit hit and miss though!

Clickspring

Try Bohler Uddeholm (<a href="http://www.buau.com.au/)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.buau.com.au/)</a> and there must be some other options from across the pond...

Factotum Industries

First rate as always. As a blacksmith I'm fairly certain all the protection is from the borax but the (steel) wire forms a nice matrix to hold it in place. Out of interest where do the "avendiarnau" handles come from? I find it hysterical all the handles (presumably formed on a wood lathe) don't have true centre holes!

Factotum Industries

Cheers Eric!

Clickspring

Ah, that explains it. Thanks! I can wait to get started!

David Rysdam

Aah righto, I think I know what the problem might be - Click on the post title "Introducing The Patron Series", that should take you to the actual post. You should see 2 pdf files directly below the YT video - I hope! If not, I'll mail 'em to you David :)

Clickspring

Chris - awesome job as usual! Looking forward to following along!

Eric Hobbs

Sorry, I feel really stupid, but I just don't see anything like that. I'm on your main patreon page and ctrl-f'ing for "PDF" finds only your comment. I don't see any "row of icons for other posts". Oh wait, is it supposed to be in the row with "creator posts" and "patron posts"? Those are the only two I see there.

David Rysdam

Hey David, on Chrome the links are just above the row of icons for the other posts. "Clickspring Hand Vise Metric - Part 1.PDF" etc Great to have you on board mate :)

Clickspring

Whoa, this looks like a fun build! But...I don't see "the links above" for the drawings.

David Rysdam

Thanks Chris!

John Creasey

Hey John, you can get most grades from hales.com.au - eye watering prices tho! <a href="http://www.hales.com.au/catalogues/industrial-materials/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.hales.com.au/catalogues/industrial-materials/</a>

Clickspring

Hey PJ, the wire I use comes from the gardening section of my local hardware store - its a tying wire that starts at about 0.6mm and goes up from there. As far as I can tell its a pure soft iron wire, so its nice and easy to twist and shape as you need. One thing I should mention is that I have come to doubt the extent of the contribution of the iron itself to preventing oxidation. I am now more convinced than ever that 99% of the protection comes from the boric acid mix, and the wire simply provides a convenient structure to hold the part in proximity to the boric acid until it melts and forms the glaze. Thin wire also doesn't hold much heat, so it doesn't slow down the quench either. Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Cheers Dan :)

Clickspring

Does anyone have any idea where you can order that ground steel from in Australia?

John Creasey

Thank You for your gifts to us Chris! I've needed something like this for a long time and will enjoy the heck out of making one instead of buying one, plus I like the features of your jaws! Those tiny finish curls with your HSS bit were inspiring. Just turned my first 4140 on the peanut and totally concur, hog with carbide-finish with HSS. I have been trying to find that iron wire you talk about for heat treating but everything out the seems to have no specs or appears to be coated. Can you please give some more detail of the wire, like OD/gauge and brands. Such a joy, pleasure and privilege to witness your work and teachings! Appreciation Galore... ~PJ

PJ

Awesome!

Dan Cowsill

Cheers Tom!

Looks like fun...another project for the list!

Tom Colson

Cheers John :)

Hey Aden, I'm learning the hard way that its a mistake for me to commit to a schedule! I shoot and edit the videos after work and on weekends, so my output is captive to my day job unfortunately. The plan is to release a new Patron Series video in between every "main project" video, so all things going to plan you should see something new every 2 weeks or so (I hope!!)

Clickspring

Thank you Ken!

Clickspring

Ha ha! Thanks George!

Clickspring

<-- What Dan said!

John Saunders (NYC CNC)

Great video once more Chris. Use those inserts in uni and it's always a rough finish on harder steel, thanks for the insight. For a metal worker that handle sure looks good!

George Harris

Awesomeness. We got a bonus this month! Wish you the best, Chris!

This series is amazing. Like all of your videos. Do you have a schedule you plan to release these on or just when you can?

Aden McKinley

Cheers Mark :)

Clickspring

Cheers Grant :)

Clickspring

Terrific to hear that Tim, will try to put in as many as I can :)

Clickspring

As always, excellent project, video, and production values. Personally, my favorite part of these videos are the little tips and details that seem like an afterthought to you, but are really excellent gems of machinist advice; it's like a treasure hunt! "A D-Bit won't track an existing pilot hole" is a great example that had me scrambling for my notebook to write down that useful little tidbit.

Tim Blakely

So pleased you enjoyed it Ken! I've got some terrific little projects in the queue for this series :)

Clickspring

Cheers Paul!

Clickspring

Beautiful work as always. Watching these make me want to spend more time polishing and finishing the parts of my projects. I never seem to have time though :)

Mark Roberts

That mirror finish.

Grant Johnson

Brilliant as always.

Paul Busby

After the teaser trailer a few weeks ago, I was getting impatient waiting for this, but boy was it worth it. Chris, you're both a craftsman and film-maker of the first order, truly top-notch! Keep the content coming!

Kenneth Klose

Gotta tell you Dan, I'm super excited about this series!

Clickspring

Yay! and four more parts to go!
