First Tick of the escapement!

The escapement is alive and ticking folks, enjoy!!

First Tick of the escapement!

Comments

Tourbillons were originally designed to compensate for gravitational differences encountered by pocket-watches; not much point on a stationary device.

Stephen Behan

Thank you Dan, terrific to have your support mate :)

Clickspring

Congratulations on the first tick! Yours is the best channel on YouTube.

Dan

Yes its definitely - I've seen a few models to demonstrate the mechanism, would be a great project

Clickspring

Hey Chris i'm curious: i donno if you're a clock enthusiast especially but i'm wondering if it's possible to make a large sized tourbillon? I've only ever seen them for watches and i'm wondering if they could be scaled up for desk clocks like this or even larger clocks?

Everfalling

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that Ryan. Its something that occupies a bit of my thinking too, particularly as I record the narration. I tend to switch around based on how it feels to be commenting on the footage; I've noticed that it often just doesn't feel natural to comment in past tense, even though it clearly has all been shot by the time I narrate. Switching from active to passive voice also seems appropriate at times, again I just run with what feels natural to say. Something I noticed when I first started the videos was that a technically correct script often sounded unnatural; breaking a few rules tended to make it more pleasant to read, as well as more pleasant to listen to. But its all a work in progress, so again thanks for sharing - no doubt its something I will continue to play with going forward. Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Amazing as always! My only critique that I can think of is that you seem somewhat inconsistent in the writing of your narration. Sometimes you use passive voice and sometimes past tense. It irks me slightly, but not enough to stop me from enjoying your videos :)

Ryan Das

Cheers Steven!

Clickspring

You have a patience that can't be matched. Very happy for you to hear that first tick!

Steven Bierlink

Thanks very much Joe, more to come soon :)

Clickspring

Thanks very much Emma, appreciate your encouragement and support :)

Clickspring

Tick tock! Or rather a delightful tink tock of metal on metal. Lovely, tidy work as always. It's so exciting to share the journey with you!

Joe Fisher

good oil wont spread out as much as 3 in 1... lol. thats running pretty well, its a credit to you. not an easy clock to build.

Emmas Spareroom Machineshop

Terrific to hear that Martin!

Clickspring

After excitedly watching every new episode of this series for months, hearing the first tick was truly the highlight of my day. Congratulations Chris! I'm very excited to see the final product.

Martin Wilson

Absolutely thrilled mate :)

Clickspring

Thanks Gordon!

Clickspring

Hi Chris, that was simply brilliant! Another professionally produced video exhibiting your exquisite skill level. Good on you, mate!

Gordon Burns

That's awesome Chris you must be stoked.

Andrew Robb

Yes I think you're correct, and I suspect the lightness of the 3rd and escape wheels means they ring out a little bit too, adding to the overall sound. Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Awesome. Love the sound of it. That must be affected by the escapement design a bit.

Joshua Chambers

So pleased to hear that Magik, and very much appreciate your encouragement :)

Clickspring

Absolutely unbelievable! I always like to sit back and enjoy your videos at the end of the day and let your narration carry me through to a blissful state. I didn't even realize it until halfway through the video that you were indeed going to do a full test on the clock today. To say the least, there has never been a movie, show or any other entertainment sources that have had me literally on the edge of my seat grinning like a child in a candy shop. Thank you so much for taking us through this incredible process. Much appreciation of your time from Canada, Magik.

Magik Eh

Yes its getting harder to maintain a pristine mechanism now that oil is involved! The brass is naturally starting to develop a patina too, which is all part of the classic clock finish. I'll bring some of the brass to a high polish, but much of it will be left to naturally age to that rich bronze color typical of antique clocks. It usually takes about 18mths before it develops a uniform color starting from a high polished finish. A good example of it are the movement holders, they have a beautiful smooth color to them now at about 3 years old. The clock is a present for Mrs Clickspring, she has recently bought the glass cabinet that it will live in, so its going to have a nice safe home for at least as long as we have it. Long term, here's hoping it stays well looked after for many hundreds of years!

Clickspring

It's really weird to see your work dirty. Also, I'm very excited to see the clock finished. What are you doing with the clock when your done? I hope your keeping it. It would be one of those rare things nowadays that could be handed down generations. It sure is beautiful.

Cheers Dan!! Yes you're right its become impossible to separate the filming activity from the machining. The best indication I can give is the time it takes me to make the videos. At the moment I estimate between 5 and 8 hours of work (prep, machining, filming, narrating, editing etc) per minute of screen time. Usually the clockmaking/machining is a very small part of that time, but the exception is polishing - that is particularly time consuming!!

Clickspring

Amazing work. I know you probably haven't been keeping track, and I'm sure that filming everything makes arriving at an accurate number difficult, but how much time would you say you've put into the project on the whole?

Dan Cowsill

Thanks Chris, Have a wonderful week.

Nelson Collar

Thank you Scott!!

Clickspring

So pleased to hear that Andrew, it was an incredible moment that's for sure!!

Clickspring

Cheers Mike, thanks for the encouragement!!

Clickspring

Thank you Tim, very much appreciate your encouragement :)

Clickspring

Thank you Eric!!

Clickspring

That's a great idea - I was kicking around the idea of an app for a while, but I'm not sure I have the time to develop it with the next project about to kick off

Clickspring

Nervous, excited and very, very relieved!! Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

It really was Tom!!

Clickspring

Thanks Kevin :)

Clickspring

Terrific to hear that Josefine!!

Clickspring

So pleased to hear that PJ!! Yes very nervous for the first ticks. Kept going in to check on it like a baby for the first few hours... "you still ticking?... ok good.. back to sleep" :)

Clickspring

Thank you Nelson!! I'm starting on the last episode of the hand vise series this weekend, so estimate 2 weeks to release for Patrons

Clickspring

Chris, this is drool worthy! I couldn't believe how fast the 19 minutes went. Looking forward to the final product and echoing the previous statement for a live feed of the working clock. Another well done!

Scott Clausen

Thank you Matt, terrific to hear you enjoyed the vid!!

Clickspring

Thanks very much Robert, and best wishes getting your shop sorted :)

Clickspring

Congratulations on bringing the clock to life! Fantastic to see it working after watching the parts come together over the course of these videos. It's inspired me to get my shop in order to take on some (admittedly much less ambitious) projects! Looking forward to future videos!

Robert Liesenfeld

Well that felt like the shortest 19 minutes ever! :-D Despite being one of your longer videos, I spent it totally riveted and couldn't believe it when it was suddenly at the end. Amazing Chris, like you said, a real milestone! Well done.

Chris, Gorgeous and I can only guess how it feels to see it run on it own. You have overcome so many hurdles and made a beautiful functioning clock. Just a little bit longer. I've enjoyed it all from the start. I have one question, when are you going to finish the Wedge Style Hand Vise?

Nelson Collar

Congratulations Chris! I actually got goose bumps as you set it in motion...sure you did too, or at least some palpitations! ~¿@ This has been an extraordinary experience for me, watching and sharing this incredible build with you to this milestone. Learning all the tools and design parameters, plus all the nuances to an age old artisanship has been a wonderful, enlightening journey and a very real gift. Thank You! ~PJ

PJ

Wow that was so satisfying to watch!

that was cool

kevin todd

Well done, this must have been an extremely satisfying moment.

Tom Colson

Wow. How can a video about a Home Machine shop creating a Skeleton Clock give you chills? I can't even begin to imagine how you felt actually seeing this thing run the first time. I can't wait for the next video.

Matthew Prince

Just fantastic. Now you need to setup a live feed so that we can all go and watch this beauty tick-tock whenever we want to relax :)

Nils Rohwer

Congrats Chris! Outstanding work as usual.

Eric Hobbs

Incredible! Very well done Chris, as always your videos are an inspiration. It's most definitely a work of art as well as an example of fine craft.

Tim bennett

Beautiful work Chris! As great as it was to hear it tick under its own power in the video I can only imagine how it felt to experience one of the first payoffs of all your hard work. Congratulations and thanks for sharing!

Mike Michelizzi

Gosh, those first ticks had me speechless! Awesome work Chris! 👍

Thank you Pierce!!

Clickspring

Thank you Paul, very pleased!! That sound is the sweetest thing i've heard in a long time!! The camera getting in the way was a bit of a problem for me at the start, but I've become used to it now. I mostly work using the viewfinder when the camera is in close. There's a bit of a latency with the digital image so I'm seeing things slightly delayed, but I'm used to it now.

Clickspring

Amazing work! Congratulations Chris, shes a beauty.

Wow, As always just amazing work. How many hours went into the pallets. I am thinking days shown to us in a few short minutes. That polish is just amazing. I suddenly realised the camera must always be in your way. How are you able to do the fine filling and have the camera "right there". Never expected a hand made main spring, i had assumed these were always bought due to the dark magic required to make them. You made that look effortless. Clock makes a great noise as well :)

Paul Busby

So true!! Cheers Mark :)

Clickspring

Well done Chris, what a fantastic build. There is something truly magical and soothing about that rhythmical tick tock.

Mark Valenzia

I've gotta be honest James, I have never felt so bloody relieved in all my life!!

Clickspring

Absolutely incredible as always mate, it was so satisfying to finally see it beat! Can't imagine how it would have been for you to see it run after all the hard work you have put in so far. James

James Finniss

Thank you mate!!

Clickspring

Well done Chris and congrats!!

Ruben vd Merwe

Thanks mate, thrilled to see it working :)

Clickspring

Thank you Ken, look forward to seeing yours do the same :)

Clickspring

Thank you Ray!

Clickspring

That first tick/tock was just wonderful to hear. Simply magnificent. Congratulations on such a significant step in the process.

Ray White

Congratulations Chris, on reaching an impressive milestone! With each new video I realize how far my clock is from completion. The road ahead is daunting, to say the least!

Ken Condal

Congratulation Chris, it looks beautiful!
