The Good, The Bad and The Oiler.

Hi Folks,

In the tradition of "A Fistful of Tools" and "For a Few Tools More" comes "The Good, The Bad and The Oiler" - Please Enjoy!

Cheers,

Chris.

ps The actual tool made in the video will be up for auction for the Make-A-Wish Foundation (www.makeawish.org.au). So if you reckon this one belongs on your bench, then be sure to put in a bid and help me raise some money for a terrific organisation. I'll post again later in the week to advise the auction link details.

At the end of a previous video, you posted a list of sources. Could you send that out again--perhaps make it a "sticky"? Trying to find one of the small tapered reamers, and the taper pins that you use.

Herb Kephart

After watching that video again, I realized that you didn't make the ruby inserts yourself. I mean, come on, it's just aluminium rust.

MrTridac

I feel a bit dull now i see you had it posted the whole time, thank you ill try to read a bit before asking a dumb question next time hah!

josh strom

You can get them from Otto Frei: <a href="http://www.ofrei.com/page248.html#30632" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.ofrei.com/page248.html#30632</a> - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Where did you get the rubys if you dont mind me asking. Great work by the way, soaking like a sponge.

josh strom

Ha ha! Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

So you're saying my go-to lubricating technique of just spraying WD-40 over everything in the vicinity isn't right? My world has been rocked.

A1BASE

That's funny. My sister lives in Encinitas CA. so I looked at that and asked, how can a town be round? But Google saved the joke!

Kevin Reardon

Is echidna round?

Clickspring

Ha ha! Thank you very much Jerry :)

Clickspring

Cheers Josh :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate, so pleased to hear that :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate!

Clickspring

Ha ha! Cheers mate :)

Ya' know Chris, we were just discussing why no one posts brass parts in r/machinists. You were the #1 reason why, there is simply no room for competition with this type of content. Keep up the excellent work, we'll stick to grey metals and marveling at each new project.

Jerry Gepes

you're clearly having some fun with editing :) great video as always!!

Josh Maleszewski

Probably my favorite video you’ve made for the intro alone, great build as well!

Tristan Sobey

That was AWESOME... Well done.

Richard Thompson

OK, if made in Italy that would have been a Spaghetti Western. Being unable to come up with corresponding name, for me is a roo awakening.

Kevin Reardon

Gday Chris, Love the flow of your oiler, could do that on my wood lathe no probs but will be crapping myself when I try it in metal :) TFS. G :)

Graeme Brumfitt

Yep! Extremely hard with beautiful rich red tone, often used for furniture. When fresh cut, jarrah is quite workable but when seasoned it becomes so hard that conventional wood-working tools are near useless on it. Native to West Australia. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_marginata" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_marginata</a>

Jeff Armstrong

Sounds like fiddly stuff :)

Clickspring

Ruby is very hard, so it eliminates particle contamination of the oil from the nib scraping the cup - Cheers from hot and humid Cairns :)

Clickspring

Thank you Mike :)

Clickspring

On both YT and Vimeo, yes Rodico - Cheers :)

Clickspring

I am not familiar with that term. Am I correct that it is a kind of hardwood??

John Gentzel

Awesome video as usual, I imagine it's on Vimeo to avoid getting a copyright strike? Quick question: 9:07, is that Rodico putty or Blu-tac?

PeetieGonzalez

I was going to ask about the reasoning for ruby but I see you've already answered that in the comments above, thanks for that! You seem to just keep setting the bar higher and clearing it without difficulty. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge and creativity with us!

Mike Michelizzi

Use a bit of good Aussie Jarrah!

Jeff Armstrong

Why the Ruby insert? I mean it looks cool, but is it a necessity or is it tradition? Thanks Chris from chilly Canada!

Michael John

A new vid from You and Tony! This almost makes up for the rest of how today went (for the record, .001" thick stainless steel mesh is a living nightmare to work with...) It was nice to watch something go right, and come out so shiny. The way the segments fell slowly together was awesome to watch. Cheers!

Clifton Ballad

Aerosol solvents are good for penetrating seized bolts, and as a brush-on cutting fluid for aluminium, but that's about the limit for me personally. If the mechanism is designed for oil, then a good quality oil is always the best option - Cheers :)

Clickspring

It won't surprise you to learn that I've been super paranoid handling this thing since I made it given that its going for auction. You're exactly right - the whole stack can be held from the top and then slowly lets go like a slinky as the air bleeds in. I'm guessing that it will slowly wear in a little more over time, but for now its a fun thing to watch :)

Clickspring

Yes that would really set it off nicely :)

Clickspring

Thank you for the info mate, much appreciated - its a beautiful watch, from their 1900 production period. It was my Grandfathers, and is still in exceptionally good condition considering its age. The movement is pristine and the case engraving work is beautiful - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Terrific to hear that mate :)

Clickspring

The song is called "Western Showdown" - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Awesome to hear that Bob :)

Clickspring

Ruby is exceptionally hard, so it eliminates any particle contamination from the nibs scraping the inside of the cup - It does look kinda pretty against the brass tho, so there is that too :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate, very much appreciate you coming on board :)

Clickspring

Cheers Thomas :)

Clickspring

Ha ha! Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

Hey Chris. Is there any circumstance when a aerosol solvent is more useful than proper oil? Or is using an oil always preferable?

Karolus

Boom tish!

Clickspring

Ha ha! Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

Cheers Paul :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

So true!

Clickspring

Cheers John :)

Clickspring

Another beautiful piece, I can just see a nice piece of hardwood with a dark stain to hold both items.

John Gentzel

Hi Chris, Loved your homage to Spaghetti Westerns in your intro and outtro. Also, really liked your Illinois Pocket Watch. I grew up not far from Springfield, IL, USA, the home of the Springfield Watch Company, which became the Springfield Illinois Watch Company, which in turn became the Illinois Watch Company. You probably already know this, but on the off chance you haven't seen it, check out this history: www.railswest.com/time/illinois.html I suspect, but can't prove, that descendents of the early Springfield Watch management team, for which the Bunn Special was named, founded the Bunn / Bunn-O-Matic coffee maker company, also in Springfield, IL. Best regards, Gottfried

Gottfried Schuss

That intro was a thing of wonder. Loved it!

Stefan C Bauer

Forgot to ask... what’s the title of the intro music?

Bob Topping

Chris - loved it, as everything you do. I’m trying to get my son to watch these but he’s only 7 so it might be a bit above his level of sitting still. But there will come a time!

Bob Topping

Great video, but there's one thing that's bugging me: why ruby? Is it just decorative, or is there some functional purpose?

Drew B.

Hi Chris, just joined the other day and binge watched everything in one evening. I sincerely respect your approach to work, and attention to detail, it pushes me to try to do better and take things to the highest quality. It had never occurred to me to make something like this. The mind set of making every tool a work of beauty is a great one. Best of luck to you and your future projects. -Jason

Jason Fox

Great Intro!

Thomas McGinnis

Phenomenal (as always, perhaps even better than most Clickspring videos). Now I have to get rid of my 5-56 and WD-40!

Gregor Shapiro

And with such nice fitting pieces I bet the suction would let it get some elevation before being sent tumbling

Sebastian Howe

Just have to hope no one absentmindedly picks up the whole thing by the top handle and sends all that precision work tumbling onto the shop floor :P

Sebastian Howe

Wow, fantastic! It looks like the curves on the Oiler follow the logarithm with a base of Euler's number :)

David Vas

They just keep getting better, how do they get better? Another great video chris. I would definitely knock that over thinking i could lift the whole thing from the top :)

Paul Busby

I just watched a video on making a container that holds oil being made......and you made me love it! Take my money and make more!

Aaron Caviness

Oh man, one of the last shots of the stack being assembled and each part settling in it's perfectly toleranced part... So satisfying! Thanks Chris!

Paul Spirito

I love the way this fits together. You are really great at making mundane shop items absolutely beautiful.

Travis Brown

Great design and techniques. The fact you have humour indicates to me that you are enjoying your life in the workshop and have the time to add even more value to your video production. Love Life, Spend time in the Shop!

Paul Devey

This was a completely new idea for me, thanks so much!

John S Dilsaver

Your craftsmanship and fantastic production value continues to impress me! Can't wait for each and every video you post my friend!

therealnubase

Chris, another bloody brilliant bit of work. Wish I could add something useful apart from my gratitude. Thank you.

Gary Knight

Ah, that makes perfect sense! Thanks for explaining.

Gert Sønderby

I will always provide links for both YT and Vimeo Al - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate - The ruby is used mainly for hardness - it eliminates the risk of particle contamination of the oil from the nibs impacting/scraping the oiler cup. The jewels are fairly affordable, about $15 each from Bergeon (<a href="http://www.ofrei.com/page248.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.ofrei.com/page248.html#30632</a>) Cheers :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate :)

Thanks David!

I stop everything to watch your videos, but please for the love of accurate clocks stop with the vimeo! Its virtually unplayable for me at any quality. Youtube works fine. Al

Al

An excellent video as always. However, my curiosity compels me to ask, why ruby in particular? It's a non-porous crystal, so I assume its lack of absorption is a benefit, as well as polishing to a surface with good properties for this use, but given the price and work difficulty between it and other materials (e.g. metals, plastics) there must be something really special about it.

Gert Sønderby

Chris, I just want to say it's obscene how talented you are! A good example (apart from, y'know, everything you've done on YT and patreon so far) is just how close you got the sections to each other. To get that kind of slide down is insanely good and I'm jealous in a good way. So here's a sincere thank you for sharing your talent with us here and I hope that the Auction goes well. I know that if I had the money I'd be placing a bid myself.

Gary Johnson

Not going to lie, the way all three pieces just slide together under their own weight is the most satisfying thing I've seen. Today is going to be a good day after that. Amazing work!!

David Sullivan

Cheers Stefan!

Clickspring

BRILLIANT. Pissed myself laughing - bloody hilarious beginning, then the usual fantastic content. Well done.

bo

You just made my day! Thank you for another awesome video, Chris!

Stefan

Awesome mate, I'm so pleased you enjoyed it :)

Clickspring

Dude... This brought a right smile to my face. I've had a rubbish day and you made it awesome. The music at the start was epic, the video amaze-balls as always. This Kiwi wants to go to Oz just to meet you. I'd be happy if that was all I did on the trip. Thank you Chris... from the bottom of my heart... thank you. These videos are so well put together and entertaining
