The one thing I have learned is that people are people no matter where you go in life. Everyone has a story. But as you said, when you're down and out you're always honest. It changes you, even if/when life gets better there is always a part of you that remains there. That's the part of you that hates listening to people in Starbucks complaining. It reminds me of something Johnny Cash once said along the lines of, "A man can be so down that the only way out is going back up." It's a darkness that is only known by those who have experienced it for themselves. Wonderful podcast Dan. Jake is even too white for a Canadian, Ha ha ha, blow that cigarette smoke in his face!
