This is a super loose exploration of a very different way of working for me, it's all done on 2 layers (one for the background and one for the figure) and there's no sketch, no drawing, no guides at all it's just painted in with full colour right from the start. It's... pretty challenging for me to be honest, I consider myself a drawer not a painter, and my mind works that way, it kind of needs the safety net of a drawing when it comes to colour - it's why the Onsen painting failed and I reworked it in a different style.
So with that said, I'm WELL happy with how this came out. It's got some issues sure, but I didn't want to overwork it (it is after all just a sketch) and there's other things I need to finish!
The first couple of images are the "final" version, and the third image is after about an hour of painting. I knew I wanted the head and any "censored" areas to be silhouetted, so the challenge was to make sure that beam of light enables the view to see enough to be interesting but leave enough for the brain to imagine. I also kind of wanted it to be a nod to classic portraiture (not that I am anywhere NEAR as skilled as those old masters)
