Q&A | Wood Shopping & Names for Tunings?

Michael asks where I acquire all of the different woods that I use and Alex wants me to start using names for tunings (not just "gDGBD" etc.).

Really enjoyed hearing you play at the festival!

Thanks, Charlie! I was wondering... now that you've got me thinking more deeply I recall that when sawing up black walnut trees around my place they are only "black" in the center.

I like the contrast of the lighter finger board next to the darker wood on your new banjo build. . I thought you planned it that way! Thanks for this info. Collecting wood to build a fretless banjo and this was helpful information.

Clifton, the white on the finger board , is the sap layer that’s right under the bark, at that point it is a very closed grain that’s why it would not take the dye, also for further reference the sap lay is softer then the rest of the wood.
