I've fought in Iraq (initial invasion), Africa, the Philippines, and Afghanistan, but the longest I've been away at one time is 15 months. It's simply unreal to imagine anything past that. By the 8th month mark you're simply trying to hold on to your sanity. I also adore the 'bastards took your company away' and the 'you've done enough'. I feel that. Leaving the guys you care about, leaving your brothers....fuck man, I'm getting misty eyed just imagining it. And I can attest as an old company 1SG, Soldiers full of piss and vinegar, combined with alcohol, and with too much time on their hands are the most dangerous element in existence. As a senior leader you do everything in your power to mitigate that. In my opinion, Speirs showed an amazing amount of restraint. If some three month replacement came in and killed one of my boys who'd been there through all that shit....I would have ended that bastard.
