Sam, a locally known rock musician, caught Jay's attention as a fan. After noticing Jay, Sam decided he wanted to get closer, which marked the beginning of their relationship.

Jay, coming from a deeply religious family, was terrified that his mother would find out he was gay. When Chris, a close friend of Jay’s mother, accidentally discovered Jay’s relationship with a guy, Jay became extremely paranoid about it. Sam already disliked Chris and didn’t want to hear or know anything about him. However, after Chris found out about Jay and Sam's relationship, Jay wouldn’t stop talking about it due to his growing paranoia.

Eventually, this drove a wedge between them. Sam grew tired of hearing endless talk about someone he didn’t want to know or think about, while Jay saw Sam’s refusal to listen as a sign of disrespect and lack of love. Their relationship ended after a heated argument in the car late at night. Sam dropped Jay off in the middle of the night and drove away. With no one else to call for help, Jay reached out to Chris, which marked the beginning of a closer relationship with Chris that would later lead to terrible consequences.

When Sam found out what had happened, he was consumed with guilt and felt directly responsible for what Chris did to Jay
