Any sort of relationship between Girs and Zhdan ended with this conversation.
Zhdan was one of the people who gave testimony against the Isaakovich, claiming he abused the inmates (which wasn’t true).
The Isaakovich was sent to prison, where the other inmates killed him as someone who harmed children.
This news broke Zhdan. He had hoped the whole thing would end with Isaakovich simply being fired and never imagined things would escalate so drastically. Though Zhdan’s role in the whole setup was minor, he still felt guilty. He was just a petty thief and didn’t wish death upon anyone.
Zhdan shared the news with Giers, hoping to unload some of the crushing guilt, especially since it was Giers who initiated the false accusation against Isaakovich—his plan from the start.
But he didn’t see even a hint of remorse in Valera.
Giers wasn’t happy about Isaakovich’s death, but he just didn’t care. It was as if Zhdan had told him some completely trivial news, like “the sun rose this morning.” When Zhdan expressed disbelief, saying, “A man. Fucking. Died,” Geirs merely replied, “So what? People die every day.”
That’s when Zhdan realized something was deeply wrong with Valeriy.
He didn’t think like a normal person, and while this had once intrigued Zhdan, now it terrified him.
Zhdan was a fairly perceptive guy, but during this conversation with Valeriy, he couldn’t detect even a trace of anxiety or concern. If anything, Giers seemed slightly annoyed that Zhdan was interrupting him with such petty news while he was busy examining a coin he’d found while mopping the floor.
