Stanford Math Department Commencement Speech

I had the honor and pleasure of being invited to deliver an address for the mathematics graduation ceremony at Stanford. In it, I chose to talk about one of the lesser-addressed and awkward-to-talk-about motivations for getting into math.

One story I've told before is a very early memory I have of how he'd play these games of stacking sugar cubes in various ways, and having me figure out how many there are. For example, maybe make a 3x3x3 stack, where you can't see the middle cube, but still have to know to count it. Various kinds of pyramids are also fun. And if I remember correctly, the right answers would sometimes result in me getting to eat one of the sugar cubes, so we have a bit of Pavlov going on too.

I would love to hear more about how your dad helped make math engaging at a young age. I have a little one coming soon and I feel it's never too early to prepare!
