The Sopranos 1x09 Full-Length Reaction

Yes. I get that feeling from this show too. I think it has to do with the great casting as the actors are able to bounce off each other and have solid natural chemistry. You BUY that Tony and Artie are childhood friends, despite being a criminal and an outsider. You BUY that Tony and Carmela have been together for years. You BUY that AJ and Meadow are their children and siblings to each other and not just young actors that we're told are related. The behavior Meadow is like with Tony and AJ is with Carmela.. they really do feel like a family. Especially Livia. I BUY her as Tony's mother and a grandmother. Her racism and spiteful personality isn't relatable to me, but I bet some people do. Its no wonder Tony says some out of pocket shit 😂 bet he gets that from his upbringing

One of the things I really appreciate about the show is the idea that I fully believe that these characters lived full and thorough, complex lives before the start of the show. Like some shows it feels like the beginning of the show and onward is the only time the characters are living and breathing. But with this I feel like the characters have not only interacted with each other for a long time, but also had their own personal struggles before the start. And I love anticlimax so much. In anything I think when used correctly it can be as impactful as the climax to a season-long narrative. The show does feel super realistic in that sense. I really appreciate the insight, I feel like when watching tv there are multiple different experiences everytime u watch and rewatch something where u pick up more and more, especially with a show as quality as this one, but ur information really adds another layer to process with each episode.

One of my favorite elements of the show is how realistically anticlimactic it is. When coming to the sopranos and hearing its a crime drama about the mob.. you instantly think about the idealized version of organized crime. They're individuals who live in a different world from us. With warped values and mentalities from the norms of society and the capability to get away with things we never would ever do. We almost live our fantasies through them. Artie is a perfect example of a character who plays that role. He's a normal guy who is an outsider to Tony and his crew's illegal activities. He said something along the lines this episode, "if only I had the balls, I could tear him apart." With this episode specifically you totally expect Tony would have the influence and power to murder the coach and we all get satisfaction from it. But it takes a turn, and Tony makes the decision to let the authorities handle it. You forget, they're all under the scope of the FBI right now. So they REALLY can't afford to do anything that could attract them right back to them. So they really aren't as all powerful as we think they are. They may have been in their golden era of the late 20's to 50's, but these are modern times. Its also a moral decision that leaves Tony conflicted. As the man of the house or boss of the family.. you're supposed to deal out punishment right? But he doesn't. For probably the first time he gives the power to the authorities... and it crushes him. To the point of getting black out drunk to cope with this feeling. He did a good moral thing, and can't comprehend the complicated feelings.
