Yes, this series developed slowly into the show people revere so much. At this point what kept it going was more the novelty of the subject and the mixture of drama and humor, Ep 11 and the finale showed a tilt towards heavier themes, but they still hadn't really figured out how to do the humor without being simply silly and quippy. Season 2 is when the show really matures, and 3 is when it becomes a stone classic.

2019-07-07 17:33:44 +0000 UTCThere were some cuts to the finale - they eventually released a book of the original shooting scripts and there was at least one scene where the Anointed One comes to Angel in his apartment and warns him to not interfere with the Master rising. I forget the exact wording, even though I do have the book somewhere. But it seemed like it was going to be a creepy scene with Angel waking up and the Anointed One is just sitting on the end of Angel's bed staring at him. I think if they had included that scene, it would have made more sense as to why Xander had to pretty much bully Angel into helping - Angel wanted to help, but he was scared because of the threats made by the Anointed one. I actually really liked the dynamic between Angel and Buffy, even in this season, but it does make more sense the longer the show goes on and the more we learn about Angel's past.

Basically someone saw potential for the new youth channel and wanted to give them a chance when Savanna was cancelled. Each season of Buffy has a central moral theme to it. The first is very uneven and it does not come across as well as the others. The first theme, like the others, is built around Buffy's road to becoming an adult. Season one: commiting to adulthood (She commited to her calling, even though it meant that she would die). Perk up your ears for the coming seasons, especially when the word "choice" is mentioned. I feel like a lot of the reactors miss out on this part of the show.

2019-01-23 16:46:22 +0000 UTCI gave it an eight, but I'm not sure, it's maybe a high 7 for me. I love this episode, but like someone said it still suffers for being season 1. Yes, the acting is great, and that amazing Buffy/Giles/Angel scene is what elevates it. And Willow’s scene with Buffy too. I love that Cordelia randomly got involved in the action, and was badass with her car. I like the Xnader and Angel snark in the sewers tunnels too :). But I do get annoyed with Angel for just sitting in his apartment in this episode - Xander, who has not super strength, no training in fighting or weapons is ready to go down there and risk his life to back up Buffy, but Angel has to be persuaded into it, despite that he's supposed to love Buffy - like he really gives up in face of the prophecy and is fatalistic. He's also pretty cowardly when it comes to the Master. But that's no so much an aspect of the episode I don't like - more an aspect of Angel. I agree that Buffy and Angel are too much in love too early, they barely know each other really. But then I don't like the relationship, I find it ridiculous a 240 year old falling for a 16 year old, I'd never have any feelings for a child. yeah, she's mature for her age being the slayer - in some ways, but on others she's not. From Buffy's side I totally get it, having a big crush on the very pretty mysterious older man - and they get into life and death situations together. But I'd call it a crush mistaken by a teenager for love at this point. Yes, the Annoying One is completely pointless. I know you’ve met Spike by now so I’ll nick his name for the boy - it’s extremely common for the fandom to use Spike’s epithet, since the kid IS really annoying - most fans hate the Annoying One, so I wouldn’t worry , you’re in agreement with most of fandom there. I kinda get what you are saying with rushed - as in the Big Bad that’s built up all season got killed pretty easy. But I actually like that :D ‘Ah, you think you’re all that - not so much mate”. And I like the death - I think it’s pretty cool that Buffy spotted the broken table shard, and threw him accurately right down onto it. What I do have an issue with is why the monster goes back down into the Hellmouth the moment that the Master dies. I’ve never felt it was that logical - well not from about the 2nd viewing onwards anyways. First time I think I was distracted by it’s yuckyness. I also like that Buffy came back to life so easy, because the death was by drowning - prophecies are tricky things, it never said she would stay dead. I think the Master put too much weight in prophecies too, hence why he left Buffy laying dead in the water - he didn’t expect anyone to come resuscitate her, or need to be really sure by complete draining, because well, the prophecy said she would die. I love the whole ‘hey we saved the world lets go party’ thing.

2019-01-23 05:30:56 +0000 UTCIn the moment I said it was in the middle but went back when I was checking the footage to see how it looked and I think I was too harsh. This Episode had 2 maybe 3 of the best moments of the season so in the end I give it a low 8 for season 1.

The only thing I didn’t like was the anointed one, I agree, completely pointless. The ending didn’t feel rushed to me. And undermining a dramatic moment with self deprecating humor or levity is a trademark of Joss Whedon writing.

2018-12-23 20:28:57 +0000 UTCThis is not really that good of an episode. I rank it at a seven...only because I love the scene in the library with Giles/Buffy/Angel. Without that scene I would rank this a six. I thought that was well written, acted, and directed. I also think that the first season as a whole suffered from a lack of time and planning as well as Joss's inexperience in general. The show was a mid-season replacement with a really low budget. Hang in there...Buffy gets crazy good, but it isn't there yet. We don't expect you to lie to us about the quality of season one, and select season two episodes that are sub-par. :) We can take the truth.

I think considering that, I give them an A for effort. And the fruit punch mouth thing- it looks like he’s been drinking fruit punch- his mouth is so red.. like he’s been drinking fruit punch.

2018-12-23 07:06:45 +0000 UTCI Have settled on the score of an 8, I think the writing and acting elevated the episode above the things that bothered me. The best acting in the entire season and the best moment were in this episode. I still feel the ending felt rushed and the season villain was beaten way too easily. He was suppose to be this big bad villain and I feel Buffy didn't struggle. It could be beacuse she was kind of reborn but for someone we saw all season he disapointed me. Also the anointed one was pointless. Also forgot to speak about the Xander stuff in the episode which I also really enjoyed and loved all of his and Willows acing as well. Hell everyone was good. Giles, Angel, Computer teacher and even Cordelia. So it gets an 8 from me. Sorry I couldn't get it higher.
