It's all to do with how each character views the soul/no soul situation. Buffy is totally on the Angel is innocent side because Angelus did those things. According to the show I think this is the literal truth. Xander is totally in the camp that thinks they're the same person. Technically incorrect but I didn't entirely disagree with him saying he shouldn't have been resouled (Becoming Pt1) and I can understand his emotional reaction here. Willow was always more on Buffy's side and the guilt thing is making things complicated for her. Giles knows the most about the theory of soul/no soul. IMO I think he backed Buffy in Becoming Pt 1 for two (maybe three) reasons, 1) his job is to support Buffy unless he's totally sure she's wrong, which he doesn't think because 2) taking Angelus out of the equation evens the odds and makes it easier for them to stop the world being destroyed, and maybe 3) Jenny's death might mean something if the curse she discovered is used. He only yells at Xander when he (rather callously) says 'well Jenny's dead'. I don't actually think Giles was 100% for resouling Angel but that's just my opinion. Giles knows intellectually that Angel isn't Angelus but emotionally has a hard time believing that. The fact that he says 'habouring a known murderer' shows he's not making the distinction. He speaks about his torture as if Angel did it. Technically he knows that's not true but emotionally he can't separate the two. All the other characters are essentially free to act on their thoughts except Giles. Sometimes he just has to repress what he's feeling because he's Buffy's watcher. He walked away from the library scene to his office. He wasn't going to say any of that stuff because he can't afford to drive a wedge between slayer and watcher. But when Buffy followed him to thank him for bailing her out he realised she had no concept of what she'd just done by not telling him and he finally snapped and told her exactly what he thought. The key to Giles re Angel is that he knows Angel isn't the one who did those things but knowing it doesn't make it any easier to deal with how he's feeling and sometimes he's just got to repress so that Buffy doesn't go off the rails. So far this is the only time that I feel Buffy is totally in the wrong. I can give her a pass for sleeping with Angel (she was 17 and in love!), and not being able to kill him so soon after that. She's not to blame for Jenny's death or Giles being tortured etc. I can justify her running away and not getting in touch for 3 month. But this?! No, I have never thought she was being anything but selfish I'm afraid and to not tell Giles at the very least gets my blood boiling just a little bit. Maybe you can tell. I LOVE his speech lol

2020-08-19 11:35:00 +0000 UTCWell, if you think of good Angel as an actual person then it is easier to understand why some people, like myself, would not side with the others. I side with Buffy 'cause if he was a human then we wouldn't just kill him because maybe he might go psycho. She should have told the others sooner that he was back but she knew they weren't ready, as shown in the library scene. I've never liked Buffy and Angel together either but I still want to treat him fairly. Xander and Cordelia came off as heartless in this episode, but I'm glad that Xander eventually saw through his rage after coming to his senses BUT...you like what you like, and don't like what you don't. Overall, loved this reaction. Thank you! :D

2019-07-10 07:04:04 +0000 UTCThe thing with Angel in the room with sunlight coming in, vampires can be okay in indirect light. I'm not sure it has been established that well at this point, but Angel could be in the room but as long as he's not standing directly in the sunlight, he's okay. Think about the "What's My Line Part 2" episode when Kendra locked him in the storage cage. There was light coming in, but he stayed in the shadow, and he was okay. With Willow and Xander, as others have pointed out, you're supposed to dislike their behavior. Joss often gives you what you think you want, but at the absolute wrong time. He's evil like that. I also enjoy that you don't just blindly agree with everything Buffy does. I find that happens sometimes because she's the showrunner and the heroine, and I find people often justifying her actions because of these reasons. But Buffy is supposed to be a full fleshed out character as well which means not being perfect and making mistakes. I'm glad you see that.

2019-07-07 21:22:43 +0000 UTCJoss loves to gives us what we wanted, in a way we never saw coming, so that we hate it. Willow and Xander would have been great in s1, early s2, and I would have shipped it. But now, its upsetting and icky lol.

2019-07-06 22:58:33 +0000 UTCFaith makes Buffy look like the good girl who follows the rules and Kendra made Buffy look like the wild loose cannon who didn't play by the rules. It makes you realize that Buffy is really just more balanced than she gets credit for.

2019-07-02 23:38:23 +0000 UTCThis is the episode that points out that there are two different set of rules for Buffy and Faith. Faith literally has no one, she is the "other" Slayer to all that she encounters and finally, when she gets someone......someone who is supposed to have her back, the person turns on her and calls her one of those names that everyone calls her. To find out that no one did any research and just turned you over........that shows you how much care they have for Faith. The ability of Joss Whedon to write secondary characters is on full display in this one.

2019-07-02 14:44:21 +0000 UTCI don't like Faith more than Buffy because I love both characters. They are 2 sides of the same coin. I love the contrasts :) Faith is balls to the wall and Buffy just wants to be a teenage girl (lets not forget Buffy was a 15 yr old "Cordelia" when she was the next slayer called lol Buffy does start out running away from her gift all hoping she can master her own destiny one day. Ugh, thast right this show is about puberty and the fun that comes along with it LOL♡ i love it

2019-07-01 01:04:45 +0000 UTCI agree with everything you just said, even the liking Faith more than Buffy. Don't get me wrong, I like Buffy, it's just I find Faith a more interesting character. I have a lot of sympathy for Faith.

2019-06-30 18:09:38 +0000 UTCI have a lot of empathy for Faith. She has lost and been betrayed by just about everyone she has trusted. Is treated like the spare Slayer, that you pull out of the attic once the main one is gone and/or unavailable. Has been very open and eager to get to know and want to be in Buffy and the rest of the gangs lives, but only gets called for training and babysitting duty. It’s been shown that she’s loyal, protective, and life obviously hasn’t been easy on her, lives in a dang motel. The gang has obviously not been completely open to letting her in the group, not truly and completely. I don’t know, I like her more than I like Buffy because she’s obviously not perfect. She rushes into things, has anger issues, everyone doesn’t seem to put her on a pedestal like they do Buffy. Which can be a good thing but also a bad thing, I see people cut Buffy an awful lot of slack. I get it, it’s her show, she’s the main character. I just hate it when people constantly compare Faith to Buffy. I think people forget that Faith is a brand new Slayer. Buffy has had years of training, Faith has been a Slayer what? 3 months? From when Kendra died to when we first meet her? Buffy was gone for like 3 months add a few weeks to that maybe 4 months at the most? Faith has been a Slayer not long at all and people seem to think she’s the weaker, lesser version of a Slayer. She has no family, friends, or loved ones to back her up, and she is barely trained. Let’s also remember that her Watcher was killed in front of her, so her training was obviously cut short at some point. Buffy has years on her, so of course she’s better at it. Sorry, rant over.

2019-06-30 06:56:40 +0000 UTCThis isn't one of my favorite episodes so I was going to skip but I had to see your reaction to them confronting Buffy about Angel.

2019-06-30 06:28:57 +0000 UTCBuffy is wrong but it does not make me dislike her character, flawed heroes are far more interesting than perfect heroes. Faith vs Buffy, I think Faith may be stronger slightly but Buffy is more resourceful and insightful (usually).

2019-06-30 02:16:33 +0000 UTCOh, demon... with Faith, he was interested in finding the glove and didn't care. Now that he realizes it's gone, he probably thinks that the Slayer has it. I don't think the issue of inviting Faith into the house came up; if it had and they didn't want it, it would have been super easy to have Faith just say, "No way." I think that would have been a good choice.

2019-06-30 01:10:58 +0000 UTCI can see Buffy's side--the soul does make a difference; it's different person in a lot of ways--but yes, she needed to be called out. I'm actually glad to see someone take Xander's side. As to Xander/Willow--I think it's certainly meant to be viewed as wrong. Weirdly, I came into the series the first time during this period (on re-runs; I started first run during season 6), so it took me a while to adjust to it being NOT the normal state.

2019-06-30 01:04:24 +0000 UTCOh good. You said exactly what I was going to say. I just wanted to add my thoughts on Xander’s sudden feelings for Willow. I think Oz’s relationship with Willow made Xander finally see her as a girl and then her near death experience at the end of last season gave their feelings some impetus. And neither of them are really thinking logically about the situation because they would definitely realize they are not right for each other. Hormones and a subconscious feeling of possibly having missed something that was left and unexplored. I also had some hormone-driven-no-thought-to-the-consequences events when I was a teenager so I can completely relate.

2019-06-29 18:48:26 +0000 UTCI enjoyed this one mainly because the secret of Angel being back is out although I was disappointed that it seemed to be resolved so quickly at the end, it felt a bit rushed. I thought what Giles said to Buffy was chilling but very on point. Although I do try to understand Buffy's feelings, I have to side with the rest of the team on this as they were all affected with Angelus last season, especially poor Giles and so I feel she had a responsibility to tell them. I really felt for Faith. She just wants to be able to trust someone and up until now, she thought that person could be Buffy but she's back to feeling like an outsider. Overall I think it's a good episode. I'd give it a 7-8.

2019-06-29 11:31:22 +0000 UTCI get and share your feelings about Buffy/Angel ship at this point in the series. I guess the most important thing to consider about Buffy and then Willow/Xander is that they are teenagers, hormonal, not fully having found themselves yet, as teens we all screwed up and did dumb things and experimented with things no matter who we turned out to be as we grew up. Willow had loved Xander for a long time and pined for him, then finally moved on only to find Xander suddenly attracted to her so I think it sparked some confusion for her. I think teens do stuff like this, and you can't always put it at the level of someone like a husband or wife cheating, they're still basically kids trying to figure life and themselves out. So its harder to judge them by the same standards as you would adults. At least that's how I view it. Angel is hard to like or care for at this point for me too. He's definitely not some confused teen so there is really no good excuse for him.

2019-06-29 11:27:48 +0000 UTCI like the fact that you are not a fan of the Buffy/Angel relationship. While it is perfectly understandable that as a teenage girl Buffy would make questionable choices (pretty sure we all did), Angels character is I believe over 200 and was an adult not a teenager when he was turned. I always thought they skimped on the writing for Angel’s character on Buffy ( not Angelous, his character is great ).

2019-06-29 09:24:05 +0000 UTCThat’s a 7 for me. The intervention and the scene immediately after with Giles and Buffy alone were the highlight of this episode. For once Xander was justified in his anger towards Buffy, but Giles reaction was even more impactful because it was restrained (he never yelled at her). Gwendolyn Post was an interesting villain and I agree that the story could have been developed more in a two episodes arc. That’s why the resolution feels rushed. I liked the fight between Buffy and Faith and that the day after they still had the physical evidence of how brutal it was.

2019-06-29 09:20:59 +0000 UTCThat feeling of anger towards Xander and Willow...trust me, the writers WANT you to feel that way.

2019-06-29 08:37:19 +0000 UTCI am not fond of the direction of characters either. That being said. In any high school drama or comedy love leads teens to make bad choices. I look back on my life and even as an adult love led me to make bad choices sometimes. I like that we see the growith of Faiths feeling that she is alone and will remain an outsider. I think that feeling eats at her even though she pretends it doesn't. I'm. glad I watched it again. Grade....7
