I know this is super late so no idea if you'll ever see this. But since you pointed out "the biggest silencer ever": As Reese said in the episode, it's a Welrod Pistol. Known for being extremely silent (normal pistols are still pretty loud/audible even when suppressed - hence why they're usually called "supressors" and not "silencers"). The Welrod is pretty much the closest thing to an actual silent gun. Although it only works for the first 15-20 shots taken. Because one of the mechanism is the fact that the silencer part of the Barrel is internally made of rubber and completely closed. As in: it doesn't have a hole for the bullet to travel. When you shoot, the bullet practically travels and forces its way through the rubber (basically punching a hole through a thick rubber piece) - very efficient to minimize sound. But after like 20 shots, the barrel will obviously have a pretty well formed hole from all the shots and at that point it pretty much just becomes a regular supressor, functionally. It's also fully manual - hence doesn't drop shell casings after a shot to prevent the sound from it, as well as the evidence left behind etc. Obviously the gun has its downsides. It's fickle to use, a bitch to reload after each shot etc. but certainly a really interesting gun and most likely (almost certainly) still in use. 2020-10-31 16:13:21 +0000 UTCWhile the episode at first seems like nothing special it's (especially on a rewatch) one of the more important episodes of the first season since it gives us a first look into Johns former life and what he did (and also how he got his name ^^) both in form of flashbacks and also in form of Ulrich. There are a lot of subtle hints scattered across the episode that a first time watcher might miss but someone that rewatches it gets (or you remember once you reach the later episodes).

I think as I recall you were commenting on something else when he said it, but it seemed a minor point at the time so I didn't comment then. Great reaction though :)

2019-07-01 16:04:02 +0000 UTCSorry to spam reply but my return key isn't working so can't do paragraphs :P I think you are tired and so not picking up on some stuff in the dialogue - the whole story in Reese's past is how he became the spy rather than the soldier. In the earlier episode when he sees his ex in the airport he is on his way to his new job - what we see this episode is the early stages of that new job, as part of a black ops group within US intelligence service (that is the implication with the whole 'your country needs you' thing. Basically this is him following a mirrored path to the one Kohl followed in the Stasi. When she says at the end 'I think you'll be...' and then it cuts to Finch saying 'Mr Reese' as he approaches him in the graveyard, he is effectively completing her sentence - the implication is that she gave him the name John Reese.

2019-07-01 16:00:45 +0000 UTCShe isn't too young to be his daughter - they left Germany in '88/9 with wife pregnant - events are playing out in 2011 so she's supposed to be about 22/23 - as for the wife's reaction. That to me is a believable reaction. Love is a funny thing - you see a husband and wife having a fight and the husband getting a bit too hands on and you intervene - guaranteed the wife will protect her husband from you

Next episode is all about Carter, it is even titled "Get Carter".

2019-07-01 08:50:04 +0000 UTCI enjoyed this episode. It isn't one of the best by any means, but I still liked it a lot. Plus... I really like the actor who played Cole... Alan Dale. You said that you recognized him and that's because he was recently introduced in Once Upon a Time, as Prince Charming's twin brother's adopted father, King George, shown in episode six's, The Shepherd. As for this episode's storyline and your questions about it... I enjoyed the overall storyline with Cole seeking revenge against those he believed was responsible for killing his wife, as well as for setting him up for taking the fall for their sins. From the way Cole looked and acted, it was clear to me he wasn't planning to walk away from his revenge. Which is why he told Reese that for him there was no tomorrow. I know that you were confused by why Cole dug up the grave under his false name. Cole dug up a stash of weapons, money, and his poisoned needles... basically everything a spy like him would need for his mission. And he left his suitcase full of clothes on the sidewalk and walked away... simply because he no longer needed them. Like we know... Cole wasn't planning on living past that day once he took his revenge. Also... you were confused by John's backstory. This is the set up to show us how Reese came to becoming the man he is now. The monster he believes himself to be. It also shows him slowly beginning to doubt the work he's been doing and why he's still fighting for his country with people he clearly doesn't trust. In the first episode, Finch tells Reese he understands that Reese had come to doubt his work. This backstory from this episode is the set up for what's to come. Overall... this episode was really good despite it's flaws, a few of which you pointed out that I agree with. The acting was really good between Reese and Cole. I loved the moments between them in the apartment as Cole is torturing John for information using the needles. I love that even though Reese is a phenomenal fighter, even he was taken down by Cole despite his age. And while the ending scene in the park had some flaws that annoyed me too, I really loved that Cole forced Reese to kill him by pretending to intend to kill Anja. It was a very sad moment and I just loved how both men felt a connection between one another. Also... while the scene where Reese shoots the car transporting the German diplomat to stop it seems strange, it shows how much of a badass Reese is. Love it. Thank you again... I look forward to more. Until tomorrow, or when you're able to get the next episodes out... Please don't feel pressured to get everything out on time, especially if you really can't record and react to our shows due to life, family, etc... I promise you that I truly understand. :)
