The nicest moment at the end of the episode is when, during the breaking news, Joe puts his hand on Gerry's shoulder. Family is suddenly family when the chips are down. Erin's reaction to Clare is truly awful, but shows how even people who wanted to be allies in theory were not totally comfortable with homosexuality at that time, particularly in super Catholic community. She comes around on that, don't worry but as hard as it is to watch, her initial reaction was probably realistic for a lot of people at the time. Interestingly with all of the great music from 90s and Irish musicians, there is one very conspicuous absence. No U2. And they were one of the biggest bands in the world and very political about the Troubles at that time. I assume they just charge too much for rights, but it is weird not to hear them at some point in this very 90s, very Northern Irish show.

To answer your question, the event at the end of the episode was inspired by the Omgah Bombing in 1998 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omagh_bombing); the creator said that in addition to showing the day-to-day impacts of the conflict (like the military checkpoints and the parade), she wanted to show a more impactful, 'big' moment that swayed national opinion about The Troubles. I also want to note that the song at the end of the episode was "Dreams" by the Cranberries, a famous Irish band who wrote, in some cases, about the conflict in Northern Ireland.
