Agreed with the above comments re: Marissa. There's this running theme of Marissa needing to be "taken care of" and "protected" by the guys in her life, and she comes off as a perpetual damsel who's incapable of making the decision to look out for herself. I don't want to diminish the traumas beyond her control -- sexual assault, poor parenting, obvious depression/mental health issues -- but now she's about to be an adult and needs to start fighting for herself.

You're right, Marissa makes a lot of dumb choices but if you look at how she grew up it makes total sense. She never had any emotional support from her parents, so she relates to people who didn't have that either (Ryan, Oliver, etc). She is super naive because she grew up very sheltered from the "outside world". The problem with Marissa though is that she doesn't have a learning curve. She keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again. But all the other people around her have evolved and grown from their past mistakes.

Also, yeah 100% on Matt's side on this one.

Steven don't make too many excuses for Marissa. I know there are shows who give all the bad things happening to one character but Marissa is not that. Her whole life is a multitude of bad choices and she's only got herself to blame for that. She's the one who always does the dumb thing it's not like those things just happened to her. She chose to do dumb things, but she does have a good heart, I liked what she did for Ryan this episode. I don't know.. sometimes Marissa is the most intuitive of the group, and sometimes she's the most naive character I've ever seen on TV. She's an interesting character when she's not annoying (which is most of the time for me).

So true, this season Julie turned around for me. I don't wanna give spoilers so I'll leave it at that. Neil on the other hand...pff really turned around for me this episode. I rooted for them to get together earlier but this episode annoyed me. It's one thing to see the engagement as a trial but the way it happened and the way he worded it left a bad taste for me. It almost sounded like he's giving Julie an ultimatum to get her life together and Marissa's or else she's not getting the benefits of being married to him...kinda like that.

A season or so ago I didn't like Julie, but I can't help but like her now and feel for her. She is doing the best she can be it never seems to be enough.
