There was a reason. They needed to establish that anyone, including the people who are clearly the main characters, can die. You have to believe, watching the show, that all the characters, up to and including Clarke and Finn, might be killed off whenever they seem to be in danger. And you should believe that, because most of them will eventually, but until the show proves it's willing to do that you won't buy in.
