2021-10-22 09:04:07 +0000 UTCFor the Kash situation, I read his ‘relationship’ with Ian as he’s acting out an escapist, teenage fantasy that he never got to experience growing up, since he didn’t know he was gay until after he was married. That’s why he behaves recklessly, with the sex in the store (even after the cameras are installed) and inviting Ian over to his house (the way he reacts reminds me of a high schooler being like ‘my parents are out of town, come thru’) and such. (It also explains why he, a 30-something year old man, is running around with a 15 year old, which is 100% illegal in the state of Illinois. And gross). He does a lot to protect this fantasy, which is one of the only good things in his life. He hates his wife, he hates his job. He says he loves his kids, but we never really see him interacting with them. This thing he has with Ian seems to be the thing he cares the most about. But… when sh*t hits the fan, Kash doesn’t really do a lot to protect Ian. Sure, he’ll protect him from neighborhood thugs. But not from Linda. He doesn’t do or say anything when she hits him, and he doesn’t defend Ian at all. It’s pretty strongly implied that Kash doesn’t even ask Ian if he wants to continue their relationship - he just assumes that they will. He doesn’t make sure that Ian’s okay with what happened. Because he cares more about being with Ian, than he does about Ian himself. So when he finds Ian and Mickey together, that fantasy gets shattered. And it really is just rubbing salt on the wound that it’s Mickey, whose thieving Linda would emotionally abuse Kash over. It all comes crashing down around Kash, and he’s finally had enough. He just snaps. As for Monica… gosh, the ending guts me so badly. Fiona’s “you were my mother too” made me bawl when I watched the show. The part that gets me too is when Monica’s like “There’s still time with Liam… and Debbie and Carl… please let me be your mommy again” while completely ignoring her other kids! Even beyond the emotional responsibility, both Lip and Ian are her legal responsibility still! It’s awful. And it’s very interesting to see your reaction as a parent to these scenes. I’m really enjoying your reactions so far. I just finished these series not long ago, and have been looking for reactions to see if people had the same thoughts I had… and I think your have definitely been among the most thoughtful I’ve found so far. This show can be pretty wild, but at the heart of it there’s a lot of really interesting psychology. There’s a lot to unpack in every character. (I also love your deep appreciation for Sheila. She’s a gem.)
