In addition to the family connections that @Jojo77 provided, Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara (Moira) are old performing partners from Canadian comedy shows early in their careers, the classic example being SCTV (still hilarious). Alexis had to be found through auditions, she was written as such a specific, odd character.
