I don't think Spike has "changed" in the way we want him to because he's still soulless. Given the chance, he'd absolutely kill (Dru killed for him last episode and he had no trouble sucking that body dry). The chip is still there but it really just stops him from acting on his desires and impulses by use of pain. I used to think Buffy was overreacting a bit (before the kidnapping and chaining up bit) when he told her he has feelings for her but, honestly, if someone like, say...Gal Gadot told me she liked me, I'd still be vomiting weeks later and questioning who I am as a person that someone that despicable could think I'm likable. And I think everyone else wasn't treating Spike badly because he has feelings for Buffy, but because he then decided to knock her out and chain her up until she loved him back. I LOVE Spike, don't get me wrong. He's one of my fav Buffy characters. But he's a toxic guy who doesn't even realise he's toxic because he doesn't possess a soul to understand it. And, let's face it, he's been helpful for cash reward and the opportunity to dole out violence to other creatures without hurting his brain. He's also always been a very obsessive guy. He was obsessive with Dru and now that he's fallen for Buffy, it makes sense that he's obsessive about her too.
