also, there was a lot of fan backlash when the show ended so abruptly. people even organized petitions and got thousands of signatures in an effort to bring the show back. i read online that they might try to bring the show back next year. but it's been 5 years since it originally aired, so the actors would look quite different now i imagine. not sure that would work story wise unless they did a time jump on the show.

2024-08-26 18:20:10 +0000 UTCso the general consensus/theory online after the series originally ended was that the parents didn't following through on the agreement to pay the man (who was also the bus driver) for removing the smell from their town. so as a consequence, the bus driver and the people he works with essentially "kidnapped" the kids and sent them to a parallel universe. however, the ending in this episode with one of the parents calmly reading to the younger kids, everyone wearing a yellow ribbon to symbolize mourning, and the names of all the missing teens on the memory wall suggests that the parents are content having people think that all the teens are dead. they have no intention of ever paying for the smell removal or rescuing their kids. which makes them the true villains of this story. this theory tracks and aligns with everything we've seen and learned so far. i think the showrunners planned on explaining more in season 2 (i read somewhere online that they originally planned for 5 seasons), but since the show was unexpectedly canceled, they never got to expand on the lore and this is the ending we got.
