The Bear "Braciole" 1x8 Reaction

Damn. I really loved this finale. Sad to hear that it was your least favorite episode! I think there are a couple things that hit for me. Whether you agree with Marcus and Sydney’s actions, they are still main characters and cutting them entirely out of the episode wouldn’t have been a good choice, in my opinion. Here, we get to see them bond as well as learn about their connection to food as well as a little of their background. Their two scenes in this episode are some of my favorite because it’s one of the calmest I’ve ever seen. Marcus is clearly a more sensitive character, which is fine and I don’t think is deserving of ridicule and Sydney seems like she’s in a place where she doesn’t want or need to take shit from anyone, including Carmy. I think it was nice to see them talk and acknowledge each other’s skills. Marcus is able to tell her that he learned a lot from her being around and Sydney is able to tell Marcus that something he’s been working so hard on, in one way or another paid off! Idk, I thought it was very sweet! The most significant thing to come from that situation is that Carmy’s food is the best meal she ever had. I believe it’s in the first episode that Sydney tells Carmy that this used to be her dad’s favorite spot and they would eat there every week. But in this episode, she tells Marcus that their family didn’t eat out a lot. I think she initially lied to Carmy about the reason she came here, which was really to work with him. So, even if her view of him is forever tainted, her respect for him and his ability and her love of his food is still something that she will never be able to erase. I believe it was episode 6 where I agreed that it was clear that Richie processed nothing about Mikey’s death. Having to watch this stupid ass bachelor party take place finally makes him let out SOMETHING even if it’s anger toward Mikey for letting it get this bad. And yeah, I think it’s fine that Richie almost killing someone leads us to one of the most affecting moments in the show to me. You can tell he doesn’t really want to have to say Carmy is all he has left, but the truth and vulnerability of the moment gets to him. It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. For the first time, we see the acceptance of the loss of Mikey from Richie and the acceptance of the presence of Carmy. I don’t know… it worked for me! Also, something to consider about the tomato cans, it is supposed to be absurd. Mikey was not in his right mind, and I don’t think he necessarily purposefully left them behind for Carmy at first. I think when he wrote the note, assuming it’s one of the last things he did, he included the recipe so that he would find the money in the cans, but he didn’t initially put the loan in there in hopes that Carmy would find it. That was just his way to take Cicero’s loan (which yes, is what “KBL” is) and keeping it “safe.” I think him not paying the IRS and the bills and other stuff was just more or less him continuing to go deeper and deeper into his addiction and his depression rather than him purposefully trying to screw people over or waiting for Carmy to come in and save the day. I actually think he cut Carmy out so Carmy wouldn’t see just what bad shape he was in. That’s why Tina’s memory of the napkins felt so poignant to me. People recognized when he was not himself. I can say more things about the tomato cans that are not technically spoilers, just really some thought experiments. But they do directly talk through it in Season 2. Next season is even better than the first, and I expect you’ll regain your respect for Marcus and Sydney — so excited to see it happen!
