EXCLUSIVE REACTION: Pride and Prejudice 1x03

I always find Darcy hilarious. I can’t help it. He has an interaction with Lizzy where she tells him he needs to practice talking to people, so he literally just shows up at her house to practice talking and expects her to just get that that’s what they’re doing, and being utterly baffling. His neurospicy is adorkable.

Rebecca Corrado

I'm not sure if you've come across this, but here's a mashup of the proposal scene with the song Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl in case you're interested: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DATsV9ByVZw/

yeah, i'm gonna second another comment up above and say that jane didn't seem more affectionate to mr. bingley than she would anyone else she interacted with, i think that was the core issue. mr. darcy mistook shy reserve for simple civility. and tbh considering how caroline bingley kinda made herself omnipresent around mr. darcy, i don't blame him for thinking that jane was a little more standoffish. and as someone else also said above, 'disinterested' means like, not putting one's own interests above anything else, not selfish.

So I’m just now realizing that I was hella manic when commenting on this video; sorry to subject you to that spiral. Rizzo, if you take adhd meds and/or any other medication’s for mental health, watch out for the signs of serotonin syndrome, it will eff you up (at least it’s acute rather than a chronic condition.

Cheryl S.

Miss King inherits money because her father (or grandfather) allowed her to do so. The Bennet sisters aren’t allowed to inherit due to Mr Bennet’s father (I think? it’s not Mr Bennet’s fault other than him not producing a male heir). Inheritance law used to be wild, & still is in some ways. I mean… after being burned by my great grandmother not having a specific will, my grandmother basically had a will that said her children (my mom & her 5 siblings) had to share the money earned from the sale of her house or either they’d get like $1 otherwise. She didn’t want any of her children to get jilted by their siblings like she did (she basically got very very little from her mom because her siblings went in & took all they wanted). Estate law is complicated. You mention no TV shows… well they could read, but reading is sometimes looked down on as “feminine” & there were (men) people who said reading novels caused negative outcomes. *shrug* women were supposed to draw, sing, play piano (or something similar), speak languages, (maybe) be well read (what you should read depended on who), speak languages, arrange flowers, teach children (maybe? Rich enough people have a governess… someone probably past marriage age), etc… Also…. Charlotte felt she HAD to marry. She felt like she was an imposition to her (rather nice) family. Sometimes, she is implied to be in love with Lizzie. She could also be implied to he Ace. Regardless… Charlotte tried to make the best of little prospects. It should be reminded that Jane Austen died almost penniless in her 30s. Few people knew who she was. The books she had published were published “by a lady”. It was still considered inappropriate for cultured women to write (see “Little Women” for more on that but from the USA). Jane Austen was almost forgotten about. Thankfully people read her later & loved her & basically she’s been loved since (moreorless).

This is one of my comfort shows. I put it on when I’m feeling down, need a reset, and don’t have the capacity to envite new characters and story lines into my life.

I fell in love with Firth's performance in the proposal scene. The subtly of his choices still managed to make me feel how hurt he was. The moment she gives her spiel about behaving " in a more gentleman like manner", the slight blink is all that guves away the fact that it stung. For a man so aloof, it was such a great choice by the actor. Darcy's instincts would be to clamp down on his emotions. His pride would not allow him to show her the effect she was having on him. But the involuntary eye movement gives away his distress but only if you are watching for it. I think this was the moment I fell in love with movies and acting.

Guin12

Darcy and all of them overhear Mrs. Bennett all the time yelling about Jane marrying Bingly, so they assume any affection Jane shows him is for his money and not because she actually likes him

Francesca White

Sorry, must have missed thr disclaimer!

Papuriko Pp

the adaptations arent supposed to convince you that she is indifferent to him. She is very much in love with him, obviously, but in public is being careful and quiet about it. They don't take him away from her because they actually think she is indifferent, they take him away because they don't like her family and connections. They use her indifference as an excuse.

Lydia

God I love this proposal scene. The only one on par with it is the proposal (and rejection) scene in another period drama North and South.

Laura Shepherd

Yes Jane Austen was writing about her present time, so young Regency ladies were reading Jane Austen! There were lots of novels, even Gothic thrillers, there's a Jane Austen heroine who was obsessed with scary Gothic novels 😄

Laura Shepherd

This adaptations really does sell the terrible proposal so much better than other versions. I'm glad you both agree. Because we get more time with Mr. Darcy and Lizzy, this adaptation is comfortable with going fully into the tension the book scene has, because this version has time to recover from it with something this long. Movies don't have that luxury. It's been discussed before, but as a sapphic, I've always headcanoned that Charlotte is secretly in love with Lizzy. She's not "romantic", she's never had any serious suitors despite coming from a respected and well-to-do family, and she agrees to marry Collins after mere weeks of knowing him- despite being firsthand witness to at the very least how deeply unpleasant he is. Granted, once they're engaged, Mr. Collins stops staying at Lucas Lodge so they're not in the same house while unwed and he stays in town and comes to the house to "make love" to her, so she does spend over a week being wooed by him with the ability to call off the wedding. Charlotte's family makes enough money that she doesn't have to worry about being a financial burden if she stays home. A societal burden, yes, but to my recollection, I believe the Lucas' are already resigned to her not getting married, as she's "older" (27) and has shown little prospects. I think she married Collins because once Lizzy got proposed to by him, Charlotte realized that the likelihood that Lizzy would remain unmarried and stay with her was very slim. Charlotte didn't have many friends besides Lizzy, and Charlotte probably thought being stuck at home alone and heartbroken with her family when Lizzy inevitably got married would be torturous. Charlotte undoubtedly thought being wife to an annoying twat like Collins was preferable to listening to society whisper piteous things about her while not having Lizzy, the woman she loves, there to prop her up. Just my headcanon. She could just be aromantic too. Both are valid.

About the inheritance issue: Men can leave their female relatives money but a lot of the time their money was tied up in their estates, and the estate passed to the male relatives. The Bennetts are not rich enough to have extra money to leave the girls. He'll leave them what he can, but it is the "house" that affords them the lifestyle they have.

Mary Stombaugh

As far as Jane not being forthcoming, I think Rizzo actually hit on it: she's too nice. She is known to be very kind, sweet, and shy. She treats everyone well - smiles and listens attentively. I think it would be rather easy to convince someone that they're not special because she was nice to them. And any extra attention given to Bingley can be explained away as Mrs. Bennet pushing her to pursue a rich man (which Mrs. Bennett helped with by telling everyone that Jane was bagging the best man in town). Also, Charlotte is quite a bit older than Lizzie. she's getting close to 30 and is almost an old maid. If she didn't marry, she would be an embarrassment and a burden to her family. Her comments to Lizzie about her life were to say, "I know you're worried that I signed myself up for a life of misery, but I'm really ok. I can make this kind of life work for myself."

Mary Stombaugh

The Jane Austen Book Club movie goes into a debate about if Charlotte is queer coded or not. Her saying that she's never been romantic is argued by the characters to be that she's possibly just not romantically inclined towards men. BUT they're going off the book version of the character and it's been a long time since I've read it so I don't know how different this version is from the one in the book.

Alicia Bardoner

About Bingley believing Jane doesn't care: I'm pretty sure in Darcy's letter in the book he mentions that Bingley has had infatuations and lost his heart before but it was never very serious. My theory is that the ladies Bingley fell for in the past all thought like Charlotte and played up how much they liked him. Since Jane is more demure, it's easy to convince him she's not interested because he's used to girls going overboard to win him.

Alicia Bardoner

I acknowledged that at the beginning yes. There was a computer issue

I acknowledged that at the beginning yes. There was a computer issue.

Dude, you guys just helped contextualize a lifetime’s worth of grief and many moments of PTSD….. either in a weekend or since the beginning of time or in one second who knows. Everything everywhere all at once metaphor..,. But thank you. This is really helping some of us obviously including you Unfuck your hour all of our vibes so thank you very much. I’m still processing this episode lol you guys are the best. I really appreciate you. I’m a woman with ADHD and this cognitive dissonance is killing me and I can’t remember if I’ve said that but I just had to throw it like a glass of water at you thank you.

Cheryl S.

The audio keeps going weird, like you're in a tin can for a moment and then goes back to normal for a bit

Hannah Charbonneau

I swear I’m fine haha maybe I’ll deal with this tomorrow

Cheryl S.

Emperor’s new groove a.k.a. Lilo and stitch a.k.a. and metaphor for first what two minutes of this episode I’m not sure but those are the two things both Benji and Rizzo. Please release the series as quickly as you can so I can marinate in it and then get over it like all of us need to.

Cheryl S.

Anyway, we both love and hate Multiverse because they help us contextualize life so actually the next step is either the emperor’s new groove and Lilo and stitch. I mean or Lilo and stitch. I could be wrong but benji your Rizzo that’s the final message that I’m trying to convey to you that I can’t sort out because I’m a woman with ADHD which is like a woman with a heart attack. I’m not sure what that feels like. What her feelings.

Cheryl S.

Emperor’s new groove and release these reactions as soon as possible for this specific fiction series at least in patreon. And at least maybe (pin here) hi and prejudice miniseries I have now like Rizzo moved on from Benji, eating a cheesy and laughed at it

Cheryl S.

A.k.a., I am a girl with ADHD and I don’t know Rizzo is both a guy with ADHD and fibromyalgia and here’s how we learn to talk to each other. Please freaking release this reaction series as soon as you can mentally manage a process so we can realize why we can both understand but not day if I both JK rolling and Jane Austen and Donald Trump, but it takes a village. The Emperor’s new groove and y’all getting like basically throwing these reaction that as quickly as possible for this pride and prejudice miniseries is what will get us here.

Cheryl S.

The pain in the thought that I’m going to put here is you guys should watch the Emperor‘s new groove together now or next year or now or never or basically what I’m trying to say is watch that together as soon as you can. I’ll laugh together because it’s stupid but awesome, but to unfold everyone else’s vibe, please please please release this series as soon as possible even if it’s the raw iteration that you’re not sure of because you don’t wanna be misunderstood

Cheryl S.

Anyway, the Emperor‘s new groove movie next one for you and Rizzo, but feel free to release it now or never or whenever but why do some people but why do ease my Kronk work I guess that’s why what I’m trying to say why do I think I need Superman but I wanna Clark Kent but I need a Kronk But someone else needs inverse (so many accidental metaphors, a.k.a. puns a.k.a. U and Rizzo nodding at each other)

Cheryl S.

Benji, I finished the thought. I hope you are proud of me the way I see you be proud of Rizzo by Notting at him briefly and why you don’t always cry, and Rizzo needs to defend you and Rizzo has an everything bagel moment and you need to defend him. The next step and that is the movie the Emperor’s new groove I think I need a Hercules but I don’t know what iteration of Hercules I need so I think I actually need a Kronk who I see is a day and I Dito new groove I mean, always sunny. Benji. Putting a pin in this thought. The next step is the Emperor’s new groove. For processing this vibe/why Donald Trump and JD Vance are both hero and villains and so is everyone else? please get out this reaction series as soon as possible so we can all Unfuck our vibes together

Cheryl S.

Benji so all I can think of for the next step for you and Rizzo after processing pride and prejudice. Is this :) omg I almost typed the last one you are glimpsing the center of the everything bagel aka erring everyone alll at tone. Anyway, I’m really trying to get this thought out the next steps in sorting out how the vibe temporally got weird with all of the chaos between you and Rizzo? I forget what words mean right now.. my suggestion I swear to God, I’ve completely settled on becaus this it’s how I can contextualize it aka frame it, for Rizzo, for you, so we can all reassure each other that this is not the end times. My dream man, a.k.a. my Leonardo ninja turtle and my sisters Michelangelo ninja turtle a.k.a. hi snuggle butt sorry talking to my cat by which I mean my sister’s cat what is ownership.

Cheryl S.

So Benji, the last question here are the last two vibes to evaluate to process this emotion for Rizzo and you and get your groove back. EITHER. The last wish or something I can’t remember so I guess it is the last wish

Cheryl S.

In my opinion, if you will pardon the language, the next step to answering, and then Unfuck, the universe vibe by which I mean, vibe my vibe by which I mean, you’re and Rizzo’s vibe which you are trying to recapture after a temporary break or are you I don’t know what is meaning what our words. Maybe actually why we suddenly love Pedro pascal and understand both ambrwr hear and Johnny drp? I’ve literally had effectively. I don’t know one glass of wine. What is volume. In the last, I don’t know four hours what is time so I swear I am not like feeling so hunger instead of brain hunger

Cheryl S.

Benji deprogramming codeword to understand Rizzo and why he is your best friend despite all the chaos of the universe. Lilo and stitch, how to train your Dragon, the Incredibles. These three

Cheryl S.

Which is why Benji for Rizzo sake, this is the final pin in the thought. Please get your reactions out as soon as possible because I am so close to this mental process that will allow me to just enjoy this like I’m literally five minutes or my entire life or the past week into using U2 to recapture the grief or the joy rather of losing part of a trio when you do duo with your exact same vibe. So you are Unfuck my vibe. Benji actually the next two things to consider to throw at Rizzo are the following three things which are my favorite central fanatic things a.k.a. everything everywhere all at once maybe that’s what it is. I think I’ve never written down to four.

Cheryl S.

Or how to train your Dragon or how or the Incredibles those I think are the best two series to marinate next to process your vibe by which I mean how we call everything corporate now by which I mean gobbling horror by which I mean everyone hates everyone else

Cheryl S.

How to train your Dragon and Incredibles and clue and the fault in our stars and the lovely bones one which I loved, but hated one which I hated but hated they’re oh and the last wish which is the thought I wanted to push in boots last wish

Cheryl S.

A.k.a. you’re a dog cat or I am a cat dog or who cares here are the themes of the central and metaphor that I just need to pin here to remind myself in 20 years that it can all be OK even when all sees a lot seems lost. I think I’m working backwards with Benji. Rizzo sake for what I wear, but I’m not sure so I’m only only gonna say one thing or maybe two.

Cheryl S.

Anyway Rizzo and Benji, here are the deprogramming breaking the hypnosis the only metaphoric forms of art you are able to accept right now to process what you are going through as a non-typical neurodivergent person

Cheryl S.

And Benji, all of a sudden, I understand why I have mixed feelings about Patreon and YouTube and the concept of patrons and the economy and words by which I process the universe and everyone else either processes it normally like you, or with baggage, like literally almost everyone else most of all the orange Cheetoso now we have to figure out how to learn how to live in the middle of all that grief which is why the 2020s feels like 1920s

Cheryl S.

But the point is, I have finally figured out. I need a krunk from Emperor’s new groove. Y’all really need to watch that movie because it is totally your vibe. Also CJ, the YouTuber and go with the most uncomfortable video or Clickbait title first. I’m going to say that again, cj the x I needed to pause to type that out

Cheryl S.

During the worst part of Covid when the San Francisco Bay Area was on fire, that is where I was not born, but I was raised. I moved there when I was two a.k.a. core memories, a.k.a. inside out, a.k.a. soul. These are all Pixar movies rework. I don’t know.

Cheryl S.

Which is why we are all both Darcy and Lizzie and Charlotte Lucas and I forget who else but I can tell. I’m finally coming down for the day and the way you have learned or you are learning very suddenly Benji to calm Rizzo down pretty much instantly in the best circumstances, I think I’m not really sure how to express this.

Cheryl S.

You guys are really Unfuck my vibe and the universe is vibes right now because you’re helping me process some thing I have not been able to process process for the last hour or my entire life. I’m not sure.

Cheryl S.

Disinterestedness means free from bias or selfish motives, so Lizzie is complimenting Jane’s ability to be forgiving despite the hurt she is going through as a result of Bingley’s actions.

Rebecca

I have to agree with Rizzo that Mr Collins would be the most fun to play, nothing is too over the top for that character

Kathleen Mccann

Col. Fitzwilliam can get it in every adaptation as for the Jane thing: the easiest way to understand how ppl cab assume that she's indifferent to Bingley ist that that's what his sister keeps telling him. And while Jane discovers his sisters character, I don't think Bingley gets clued in even until the end. So his excuse in public will be that he thought she was indifferent (omitting his sisters influence as to shield her) and he will believe his sister did it in his best interest...

Papuriko Pp

Ha loved Benjis wrap-up, it is pretty horrible the conceit Darcy brought into the proposal, honestly it wasn't any more appealing than Mr. Collins' attempt. Fun fact: the original title of the book was First Impressions

Kathleen Mccann

idk if you're aware but the audio switches from time to time.

Papuriko Pp

the actress from Shaun of the Dead is Lucy Davis. She also played Aunt Hilda in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. She's one of the best parts of that show, tbh

JackBNimble

I’ve always seen Lizzie’s reaction in the freeze frame as ‘I’ve just turned down an extremely rich man who could have helped my family’s financial problems’.

Allypally

The aunt, the one that Lizzie travels with, is also in House of the Dragon. Joanna David. She's in season one, episode 2, Lady Redwyne, she's the one with the pug. Also, when we moved into our house, I had to send my best friend a picture of my bedroom and the SHELVES IN THE CLOSET. 😆😆

MamaSeesa

Not to mention his choice of wife lol.

MamaSeesa

Darcy's first proposal was a car crash - a disaster but you can't help to look. Otherwise he is such an akward turtle. He is an introvert in need of adoption by an extrovert (his choice of friends kind of proves it, both Bingley and Col. Fitzwilliam are more outgoing and people pleasing).

Klaudia

“Is your family in good health?” - Darcy’s one and only pickup line
