Parallax Scope Shadow (Opinion)
Added 2024-11-14 15:17:54 +0000 UTCHi!
Here's one more optic thing that is a bit "controversial" when it comes to realism vs. video games.
I added a shader support for parallax scope shadow that increases realism but produces significant drawbacks for using scopes.
This shader effect basically simulates shadowing when there's a angle difference between the eye and the lens.
Drawback are for example:
- If you make fast turns, you lose the sight picture completely.
- If your arm stamina is low, shaking produces tilt = more shadowing.
- If you are shooting the recoil produces tilt = more shadowing.
- If you get shot, hit impulse produces tilt = more shadowing.
Here's how this works IRL:

Even though the scope shader now supports this, I'm not fully sure if I want keep this activated, so I decided to ask your opinion on this.
Let me know what you think.

I like the effect it adds realism and if you are moving while aiming there should be these effects

2024-11-16 05:16:07 +0000 UTCI quite like this effect in the anomaly mod (I think its called shader based scopes). It is possible to have it as a toggle in the options?

2024-11-15 18:05:09 +0000 UTCI think it's really cool. Idk if it just feels wrong to see in a game, but if anything, maybe the gradient from black to image looks a bit too crisp? I guess it mainly looks odd since there are no lens distortions going on simultaneously.

2024-11-15 08:12:20 +0000 UTCI'd keep it. Its a survival game. Part of the deal is planning and preparation and engaging from an advantage. IMO if this is getting you killed its because you got ambushed, and that's never going to feel good.

2024-11-14 20:43:42 +0000 UTCHaving discovered parallax errors later in my shooting 'career', I am all for it from a realism point of view. My question is - will this visual effect actually have a downrange effect? Usually if one doesn't have a full scope picture and takes the shot - this will have a negative effect on accuracy. You'll usually miss. Will the real effect of parallax (i.e. a miss) be taken into account?

2024-11-14 20:17:44 +0000 UTCIn the video it looks kinda weird and "floaty" to me, but I'm not against the idea.In general I think that a feature like this fits the vibe of Vostok and I'd rather just have it in the game than litter the settings menu with toggles.

2024-11-14 18:44:31 +0000 UTCI like this a lot. I think it probably affects the balance of the game, and so whether it should stay or not might not be clear without playtesting. One thing that comes to mind is that magnifying scopes can make the weapon very powerful unless there's some kind of drawback to using the scope. They might also make the weapon usable as a sort of always-on magnifier.

2024-11-14 17:56:22 +0000 UTCIt would be cool to have as a toggle in game. I'm not sure either way on it yet honestly

2024-11-14 17:02:20 +0000 UTCYes, this effect applies only to scopes with magnification.

2024-11-14 15:58:48 +0000 UTCoh hell yes. do i understand correctly that we should expect to see this effect in scopes with tubes, and not in reflex or holographic sights?

2024-11-14 15:57:56 +0000 UTCLooks good in the video, but it's difficult to judge how it will feel like in game. I think it's an improvement for sure, but may need some balancing as to how strong the effect is.

2024-11-14 15:40:57 +0000 UTCI really like this and would love to see it in final game! In most games scopes don't have any downsight and this adds the downsight + it makes it more real feeling in my opinion.

2024-11-14 15:39:02 +0000 UTCI definitely prefer the parallex as it makes the scope feel more real and gives actual real world drawbacks scopes have. But if it is not too difficult, maybe have an option to toggle it in the settings?

2024-11-14 15:28:18 +0000 UTCYES! I am 1000% in support of this. I love it. I am a big fan of realism in shooters so stuff like this is right up my alley.
