*This* was an awesome episode. I kind of think of it separately from the two episodes that followed, which were a bit weaker. But yeah, as a reintroduction of the Master, this was awesome.

2018-10-04 22:10:29 +0000 UTCLoved the reaction, as always. Can I just say, and this proves that I'm getting older, I thought the music at the end was too loud and was obscuring what you were saying. Enjoy the next episodes. IMO you're arriving at the best point of NU-Who. From this point and for the next two or three seasons, the show is epic. You really should watch some classic Dr Who stories (they used to be around 25 minutes per episode, with each story lasting for 4 or 6 episodes). Perhaps we older Whovians could give you pointers on good stories to watch. This would also introduce you to the previous Doctors. You could watch one or two stories per Doctor - just a thought!

2018-10-04 20:03:23 +0000 UTCavoid looking up who the The Master is for spoiler reasons, just read the comments here. while the doctors main nemesis is the daleks, The Master is a very close second, as he is essentially the Doctors equal. imagine all of the doctors talents and inventory, now imagine all that knowledge and tech but in the hands of an evil time lord.

2018-10-04 18:46:50 +0000 UTCThe master is a classic who villain
2018-10-04 17:32:37 +0000 UTCOkay, a bit of context for you here. The Master is a villain from the classic series, who first appeared in 1970 opposite the 3rd Doctor. He is the Doctor's nemesis - a Time Lord who is as utterly evil as the Doctor is good, and just as brilliant. He's sort of a Professor Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock Holmes. That moment when Derek Jacobi turns from being the bumbling, genial Professor Yana to this character of utter malevolence (all with just a change of expression) is really chilling; and then when he utters "I am the Master", a thrill goes through every long-term Doctor Who fan. It's a real pity Jacobi didn't stay on as the Master, as he would have been brilliant. John Simm does a great job, though, if a little too madcap. One thing every Doctor Who fan knows, though, is that whenever the Master shows up to face off with the Doctor, no matter who's playing him, you are guaranteed of mayhem, death and chaos. You're in for quite a ride the next couple of episode!

2018-10-04 09:44:47 +0000 UTCBTW - Avoid googling The Master, even pictures - as you will probably get really bad spoilers for later episodes!

2018-10-04 01:34:45 +0000 UTCTime Lords regenerate when they die - not really anything to do with the Tardis or Time Vortex - they can regenerate anywhere. And indeed - in Classic Who, they did. As has been said above, the Master dates back to the 1970s, and is an evil Time Lord. He has all sorts of strange powers and abilities that keeps changing with his different forms. He usually has a funny little beard and laughs a lot, and was called the Master as he could control people and make them do things. When he wasn't busy killing them! He also has a tendency to steal bodies and posses people when he runs out of regenerations! He is as clever as the Doctor, and usually has his own Tardis. His depiction in New Who during the 10th Doctor is not really in character with the classic Master - he is a bit too mad! He is at his best in the 1970s episodes, where the amazing Roger Delgado played him. The master, in some form, has had contact with every Doctor since the 3rd Doctor in classic Who.

2018-10-04 01:12:25 +0000 UTCWhat a great performance from Derek Jacobi. I hadn't watched this episode since original broadcast, so obviously it's interesting watching it a second time and knowing his identity. To Classic Who fans, this was as big a moment as the reintroduction of the Daleks and the Cybermen in Seasons 1 and 2 respectively. The Master was the third big 'baddie' from the classic show, so this was huge. This really is a superb run of episodes from Human Nature to the finale of Season 3 (and tbh, even beyond with much of the opening to Season 4 being great for me too).

2018-10-04 00:17:48 +0000 UTCI love that you didn’t even consider the possibility of another time lord. My friends all wondered what happened to the Daleks as well. And they thought the watch meant it was the WWI kid too. It’s okay you don’t know who the master is, the specific identity wasn’t important for a reaction 😀
2018-10-03 23:48:01 +0000 UTCThe master is a character from Classic Who. The two parter where the doctor becomes human is connected here, as The Master used the same technology to make himself human and became the Professor. He regenerated just like the doctor. As Jack said in the episode he used the Hand to detect the doctor ( it can detect Time lords), hence why the hand started bubbling as the professor reverted back to a time lord. But the Hand or the Tardis did not take part in regenerating the master.

Hugh Burke
2018-10-03 23:25:34 +0000 UTCSir Derek Jacobi, who plays Professor YANA, is one of the most renowned Shakespearian theatre actors in the UK. When his casting in Ep 11, “Utopia” was announced, everyone gasped at the coup the casting team had pulled off. John Simm’s casting as the new version of The Master was even more impressive to most TV viewers as he had recently won every award going as the lead in the BBC drama Life on Mars. Oh and in the scene where YANA is remembering the past, there are voice samples of previous actors who played the Master, taken from episodes shown in 1971 and 1983!
2018-10-03 23:20:28 +0000 UTCWelcome to your first experience of The Master, a classic villain from the original series. Basically up their with the Daleks in terms of being an enemy of the doctor.

2018-10-03 22:56:16 +0000 UTCLoved the reaction! Loved hearing your theories as we led up to it. To answer your question at the end - no, you haven't seen this character before. He's a well known villain from the classic series though. Kind of the Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock.
Trey Moore
2018-10-03 22:32:11 +0000 UTCThe master to the Doctor is like the Moriarty to Sherlock Holmes. While he was a character from the classic series, the new series does a great job at reintroducing him
