The pen fell from Vivi’s hand. “He’s… awake?”
Senith nodded. She smiled, the type of smile one inch of happiness away from tears. “Your grandpa is awake. But, um, he doesn’t speak Fimian. We’re still searching for a translation skill. I also think he’s a bit… upset?”
Vivi forgot the drawing of Thorn Sword behind her. Anything to do with science and skills disappeared from her head, replaced by a rush of emotions and adrenaline. She pushed past Senith and Lu...

After dropping Eem off at the mines, Vivi returned to the Lost Raindrop, feeling a little nervous herself. She already missed not having Eem on her shoulders. But on the other hand, she was glad to have time for her own projects now.
Entering her smithy, Vivi noticed that someone had been inside. Nothing had been moved, but a note had appeared on her nightstand. One with the Luminary’s official blue stamp. Vivi opened it.
The handwriting was elegant, which made Lucius pout as ...

Vivi never thought of Eem as the type of person to get nervous. The fiend bounced around wherever she wished, living life as she liked, while annoying demons with a wide smile on her face.
In the carriage ride toward the mines, however, after being told she needed to stay put for a job, Eem actually looked thoughtful. She had her hands on her knees and eyes pointing low. She wasn’t bouncing around in excitement.
“No need to stress,” Vivi said. “We’re visiting ...

Eem didn’t say much on the way home. She clung to Vivi, occasionally scowling at Lortel as if the concealer was some devil. Vivi chuckled and mentioned that Lortel was the one who saved Eem. Eem didn’t seem to care, and merely buried her face into the fabric of Vivi’s dress.
Vivi smiled. How is she even clingier now than before?
“This might become a problem,” Lucius said. “We have a lot of work to do. We’ll be slowed down if we have to become Ee...

Vivi travelled back to the Lowmoor district in the carriage that was supposed to take her up in the first place. She received mild scolding from Lucas for her escape stunt, but he was smirking while he spoke. In the end, Lucas was just her business advisor. He couldn’t forbid her from moving around the city, even if he did try to dissuade her.
Back in the silence of her home, Vivi was certainly tired enough to crash into bed. Instead, she paced around, thinking of her next move.

Lucius’s tail puffed, his carefree mood crushed in an instant at the mention of the name. “We need to go,” he said. “Where’s the secret exit?”
Coshi frowned as well. She took a seat at the end of the long table, rested her chin on her fists, and said, “Bring him in. Vivian, take a seat.”
Vivi blinked. “Really? You want me to stay?”
“You’re dressed better than I,” Coshi said. “I’ll introduce you as a dear friend. Sit still an...

Vivi entered the Luminary’s palace with nervous steps, mind distracted from what she’d originally come here to accomplish.
Eem was alive. In this very same city, but still captured by Ingfried's guards—the same people that would hunt Vivi if they knew her identity.
And considering she was famous in Shivenar, using her own name, that probably wouldn’t take long.
At the very top of the city, Vivi had access to the palace through a hidden entrance to the east of the ...

The crowd that used to wait outside Vivi’s smithy, it turned out, had not disappeared at all. Everyone had simply been kicked back a few streets.
Vivi sneaked past construction through a narrow alley and peeked into what used to be the main highway leading up, out of the Lowmoor district. Today, the street was packed to the brim with people. It didn’t seem to be a riot. People weren’t shouting angrily or fighting. They stood calmly in line, waiting for something. There were five ...

Vivi required a moment to process what she just heard. “The mountains? They can be reanimated? Into monsters?”
“Anything dead can be reanimated,” Lucas said. “If a storm brews in the wrong place, you’d be surprised by what can come out.”
She really didn’t like his tone, or the way he looked at her like some father telling bad news. She glanced at Senith, whose head was low as if she was being scolded. This seemed serious.
“The Shivell mountains are surge...

Vivi’s consistency with three-runed swords had improved drastically within the last two-weeks of daily runesmithing. Her completion rate was nearly a hundred percent, so long as she warmed up and didn’t aim to shape the absolute perfect set of veins. The tighter the veins, the higher the chance of failure, of course.
Blossom was still her best sword, but Vivi was practicing, and slowly closing in on the level of precision required to reliably craft something on Blossom’s level. F...

The problem with owning a good bed was that each night was extended by thirty minutes minimum.
Vivi lay in a cloud, with a mattress so comfortable she could have paid fifty thousand ether for it. Her blanket—blue, of course, to match the theme of her home—was the smoothest thing she owned. Vivi lay underneath its warmth with her hands above. The chilly night had caught to the blanket’s outer layer. She ran her arm across the cold parts, and the fabric warmed up.
Lucius float...

I can see it.
The flow of ether moved within Vivi’s consciousness. A school of wisps swum like fish in the river of her blood, enhancing everything they passed. Vivi guided the flow calmly, as if shaping a canal within the sixth realm. Wisps could not be directly interacted with; channeling ether had more to do with manipulating the wisps’ surroundings.
Vivi zoomed in on the active wisps, studying their structure. The sight confirmed what she had suspected ever since ...

After living in Lokora for over fifteen years, Luna was embarrassed to admit she still didn’t recognize almost any of the townsfolk sitting at the tables around her.
The loud middle-aged woman on the bar stool by the counter was Mrs. Pearl. The woman had helped her out when Luna got embarrassingly lost in Lokora’s Summer Festival two years ago. Today, Mrs. Pearl’s speech was slurred and her balance wobbled. The stool leaned on two legs, about to fall. Luna reached into her mana c...

“So, you’d still suggest I should become a tea farmer?” Samentha asked. She tried not to smirk, but the expression came involuntarily. She couldn’t help but feel smug when faced with her grouchy father after so many years of listening to his endless grumbling.
A stick of incense burned beside her. The hut was small and cramped, with a lone wooden table and a tiny kitchen—which in this village referred to a cutting board and some knives, perhaps a pot to boil water—and a smal...

“Is he going to live?” Vivi asked.
Grandpa was frowning even in his sleep. He lay on a small water mattress inside one of the igloo-like stone homes. This building was intended for guests and didn’t house much furniture. Blocks of stone acted as benches, a larger block as a table.
That wasn’t to say the house was stale. Art had been carved into the walls, mostly monsters and sharp objects. The artists were skilled with their tools, but the surgehound they’d depi...

Upon activating her skill, the ground seemed to fall, her footing disappearing. Vivi felt a rush in her gut from the sudden change in elevation. Her head spun, until her eyes finally realized the ground hadn’t fallen; she’d shot thirty feet in the air, her head level with rooftops around the plaza.
Warp Of Nature, at its lowest and unevolved level, was a rather situational skill. All the skill did was fling its wielder into the air uncontrollably. Vivi already felt herself falling.<...

Nobody attacked Vivi. Despite being surrounded by hunters, Vivi wasn’t ambushed from behind. For the first time, the ether hunters seemed ready to hear Vivi’s words as if she was an actual human. The amount of disapproving eyes in the crowd was almost none, excluding Andre and the Greenwitches, whose gloominess stood out without even looking in their direction.
It’s my dress, Vivi thought. And the number in my core. Everyone sees me differently now. Literally.

“If you want a lighter sword, bring me my tools and lighter ether roots,” Thomas Warren’s Son complained. “Not one runesmith in the world’s going to place a swiftness rune in a fucking iron root.”
Andre’s brows furrowed. He held back the deeper scowl that tried to twist on his face. The smithy was dark, lit only by the forge and a few candles, for Thomas refused to install an ethereal lamp. Too much light made it hard to focus, apparently. The basement, with its s...

The meeting took a full day to be arranged. That was fine by Vivi—she had work to do before leaving regardless. She headed to the smithy and forged as many two-runed swords as time allowed, which turned out to be three. In the meantime, Lortel tailored another dress for Vivi to “use as a backup” for her trip.
I’ll need to leave the Lost Raindrop, Vivi thought. Already.

The four hunters were far from amateurs. Vivi spotted Henric Barrowbow—a hunter who she had dueled and lost nearly instantly, though that was over a month ago. His allies wore the same uniform with auras equally as scary, though Vivi didn’t recognize their faces. Their spirit blades were bright white with golden streaks lashing around the blade like sharp threads.
“That’s a technique for decreasing leaks,” Lucius explained. “The weird tendril threads redirect et...

Holy fucking shit, I thought, surprised I was still alive. Somehow, no stray magic had hit me.
The explosions and chaos around me finally calmed down. My ears still rung from spells colliding against each other, crashing against walls. Magic was deadly as all hell in the wrong hands. Even being hidden away in a locker during a fight like that could have ended up in me dying in crossfire.
Luckily, Almir Hedwin, the sixteenth crown of the mages’ association, was quite lit...

Vivi teleported straight to Ythar’s dream island. The skies, contrary to the usual perfect weather, were gray and cloudy. Cool wind breezed the skin of her legs under her skirt and caught her hair. “You declined an audience with the Luminary?” Senith asked with a look of horror. She stood carefully next to Vivi’s nightstand, away from her runesmithing equipment. Runesmithing tools seemed to make her nervous.
“Should I not have?” Vivi asked. She suppressed a yawn. She’d just finished a bath, preparing for sleep, when she received five consecutive knocks on the door. That was code for Senith’s or Lucas’s arrival. The code for actually pleasant guests.

To Vivi’s surprise, her hands hadn’t forgotten how to shape veins.
She wasn’t as accurate as she was on the final days of the competition—the level of concentration required to craft something like Blossom was insane—but her movements were smooth enough that she had no reason to beat herself up. Given a few days, Vivi would be confident enough to attempt more three-runed swords.
For now, she just had fun. Her first work was a greatsword that technically had two ether roo...

A metallic crash echoed loudly from Luna’s left.
The room filled up with active mana—a similar feeling to a powerful mage casting a spell at full power. The feeling was even stronger than when the headmaster himself showcased his magic.
Luna’s eyes scanned the room wildly as Mother searched for whoever had cast it. The feeling of mana clearly came from Luna’s left, yet her vision was blurry as Mother struggled to find what she was looking for.

Vivi lifted the odd bar that had a weight on each side. She lowered it down, and she lifted it again.
Lucas had called it a “dumbbell.” It was an exercise device to gain strength back. Vivi was supposed to lower down to a squat with it in her hands, using no ether, and then stand back up a total of ten times. And with a lighter dumbbell she was supposed to strengthen her arms alone, lifting it up and down.
The lighter dumbbell had been too weak for that, so Vivi just used the ...

Kai’s warning proved to be true. The next morning, Luna woke up to find Mother in a scarily odd mood. Luna struggled to believe what she saw, wondering if the woman had been possessed.

The next time Vivi woke up, the bed underneath her had grown in ether value a hundredfold.
The bed didn’t just have a frame underneath; Vivi had a whole canopy above her head with see-through silk curtains around her. The sheets and blanket were like clouds. She was clad in a nightgown, which was probably twice as expensive as the dress she’d bought. Anything Vivi touched or saw probably cost more than Grandpa’s full smithy.
