Viceroy's Pride Update

Just as a heads up, my current plan is to finish (for now) Viceroy's Pride as a trilogy.  It's been a lot of fun to write, but after 8 months and close to a thousand pages, I'm starting to get a little burned out.

There's a decent chance Dan will come back at a later date for a follow up series, but for now I'm going to be focusing on Blessed Time, Blessed Time's Kindle release, and a secret project that may or may not get revealed to the patreon depending upon if it is good enoug...

VP - Book 3 - Chapter 37

Sunlight disappeared behind Dan as he and a team of fifty power armored soldiers walked up the ramp into the Orakh landing ship.  At the mouth of the vessel, Dan paused for a second and glanced backward at where William organized the rest of their forces in a rough semicircle around the spacecraft.  The man moved efficiently, spacing the vehicles and armored troops out amongst the more conventional infantry.

Dan sent a trickle of mana into his sword, wreathing it ...

BT - Book 1 - Chapter 39

The cavern was gigantic, more than large enough to house Basil’s Cove in it.  More than that, it was gorgeous.  Every cliff face and stalactite was covered in intricate carvings and inlaid with metal filigree.  Even the ceiling was inlaid with a great tile mosaic, displaying great battles of old in intricate detail.

Micah sighed and looked at the enemy.  Almost 2000 Durgh warriors standing behind rows of slavering warbeasts.  Past them, the Khanmo...

Dan watched as the mechs walked away from their forces, heading single file back toward the George Washington bridge, a handful of their injured soldiers including Abe traveling with them.  He sighed and turned back.  Barely an hour in and their carefully scripted battle plan was already in tatter.

The Viceroy was in range to provide air support, but other than its drones and the handful of armored vehicles, the last of their heavy weapons were leaving. &...

The Durgh sentries died quickly.  Brensen dropped from the ceiling of the great cavern on top of them, their bony claws ripping through the guards like a boulder through paper.  Only their warbeasts, great chitin hovered hounds with fangs the size of Micah’s forearms, survived the initial surprise attack.  They didn’t survive the daemon’s follow up.

The sliver of light that marked the entrance to the Great Depths had long since disappeared behind Micah,...

Micah sighed, taking in the collection of saplings that used to be the grove.  Every dreg of temporal energy was siphoned from the old growth trees and into his collection of daemons.  Dozens of Onkert milled about, snarling and whining at each other as ten Brensen lounged indolently in the shade just outside the bounds of the grove.

Next to Micah the two Luoca, cicadas the size of an ox with the head of a man and the tail of a scorpion stood silently, observing h...

VP - Book 3 - Chapter 35

After the first brick was thrown, a hail of rocks, chairs, and other hard objects began crashing to the ground around Dan.  The soldiers in powered armor simply ignored the projectiles, opting to return fire on the Orakh.  A direct hit might stagger them or knock them off balance, but generally the magically reinforced armor could weather the blows.

The rest of the expedition hurried under the mechs, taking cover from the metal and cement slamming into the pavemen...

Jo’s laughter filled the night as she ran out of the bar, a crumpled hat in her hand.  Micah pursued her, trying to keep a smile from his face.  Behind the two of them, three burly men and a sunburnt woman sprinted down the dark street, livid expressions on their faces.

A pair of daggers coated in flame soared past Micah, lighting up the moonless night as they guttered out on the cobblestones of Basil’s Cove.  Jo spun around in a graceful pirouette, bowin...

The Viceroy rose overhead.  Dan had finally found a soldier with the time affinity while awakening the rest of his forces.  They’d dropped the woman off in Brazil with Abe while shuttling their forces back and forth and she’d ranked up once.  It didn’t give her an insane amount of mana, but it was enough that she could teleport the ship a short distance.  Once.

They’d tested her abilities of course.  Rebecca could only warp the ship...

The five Brensen flitted about the Decrepit Behemoth, digging their skeletal claws into dark red armor and ripping it off piece by piece.  The gigantic monster tried to swipe at its assailants, but they easily hopped out of the clumsy monster’s way with a series of angry squawks.

The flames powering the beast stoked higher, bringing the temperature in the room to a sweltering level.  The daemons didn’t seem to notice as yet another plate of armor clange...

“We’ve got ‘em on the run Dan,” William smiled, a manic glint in his eye.  “Dennis Billings, Sharon Redding, and Edmund Adeleke all have reached out to us.  They don’t trust us, but they absolutely hate each other.  It sounds like they’re willing to fade back into the woodwork so long as they aren’t punished too severely for their attempted coup.  Even better, they’ll settle for releasing their technological advancements to us in exchange for...

Blessed Time Kindle/Side Story?

As an update/poll I wanted to tell you about my plans for the story/other goodies for you.

The story has done well enough that I do not plan on putting it on Kindle Unlimited (due to exclusivity rules).  Instead, I plan on touching up the first two arcs to slow down the pacing/add to the characterization (I went through them faster than I'd like in order to get the story to what I thought was a more interesting point).  This would mean that each arc would be 15 chapters. &nbs...

The Onkert slammed one of the scale wolves against the dungeon wall.  Micah lashed out with his spear, willing mana into it to make it wrap around the wolf on top of Will.  The monster clawed and bit ineffectually at Will’s stone face and throat while the portly man screamed in panic.  It wouldn't be able to harm Will through his blessing until he ran out of mana, but Micah was getting a headache from the man’s shrill yells.

He yanked the wolf closer to h...

VP - Book 3 - Chapter 32

For the first time, Dan got the opportunity to watch the reaper drones launch from the Viceroy’s aft cargo bay while on the ground.  He leaned back, enjoying the thrum of their turbines as they shook the roof below him before soaring toward Drummond’s forces.  There might have been anti aircraft guns in Bakersfield proper, but out in the suburbs they were overextended and unprotected.

Missiles rained down upon the advancing robots, great explosions le...

Micah threw the reagents on the ground in frustration as the ritual fizzled once again, filling the air with an aurora of strange colors and smells before the circle burned itself out entirely.  From the other end of the clearing, Telivern snorted at him.

“I’m sure this is funny for you buddy,” Micah rolled his eyes as he wiped the ash covering his hands off on his trousers.  “You didn’t brag about being some sort of incredibly powerful summoner only to ...

“Come on Micah,” Trevor dragged him by his arm as Micah struggled weakly.  “No one really cares that you’re sixteen.  As long as you have attunement to spend and I vouch for you, I’ll be able to get you into the Lancer’s guild bar.”

“But,” Micah began, his eyes flicking back to Drekt, Jo, Sarah, and Will bemusedly following Trevor.

“Nonsense,” Trevor continued, ignoring Micah’s distress.  “You can be a solo if you want, but I...

Summoning the second Brensen pushed Micah to his limit, but it turned leveling into a joke.  Each Daemon was almost as powerful as Martin, a full Royal Knight, and fully capable of handling most of the dungeons around Basil’s Cove on its own.  With the addition of the second, even the Cavern of Rust, the highest ranked dungeon in the surrounding area, wasn’t a credible challenge.

The dungeons themselves were sorted by the average level of their inhabitants. &n...

Micah wasn’t sure when turning sixteen and ‘revealing’ his supernatural powers to his family had lost its charm, but it no longer interested him.  He suspected that an entire timeline of enslavement and suffering due to the rarity of his ‘gifts’ had something to do with it.  Revealing some of his powers to his family was still necessary.  After all, what sixteen year old wouldn’t be excited about his new abilities, but Micah just couldn’t enjoy it any...

Micah touched the craggy bark of the old growth tree, his fingertips trailing across its rough and damp surface.  Even without casting a spell he could feel its age, the gravity and presence behind the giant.  Its branches spread out over a wide mossy glade, practically touching those of its sisters.  The six majestic giants towered over the clearing, only allowing a small amount of the sun’s light through their leaves to dapple the moss and grass below

BT - Book 1 - Chapter 28

This is a book that you should not be reading.  The knowledge contained within is dangerous and forbidden for good reason.  Summoning Daemon’s from Elsewhere, while a potent art, cannot be done with any measure of exactitude.  Even the most talented of ritualists could easily drain their entire lifeforce by accident or fail in binding a Daemon that they summon.  For those brave enough to actually use this book, many of them will die at the hands of their...

Micah clutched his spear, squinting into the mist that spread out before him, unable to make out anything but vague and diffuse white light.  Behind him, the door closed of its own accord with a click before promptly fading out of existence.  He frowned slightly, but didn’t otherwise visibly react as his only escape route disappeared.

“Congratulations champion,” a genderless voice stated without any noticeable expression.  “By raiding a dungeon above ...

Micah’s air knife slipped under the shadow ogre’s guard, scoring the tough flesh of its torso. It bellowed its frustration at him, swinging a clawed hand at neck level.  Micah brought his spear up, willing mana into it to wrap the weapon around the ogre’s fist.  His toes left the ground as he let the momentum of the attack transfer through the spear’s haft and carry him back a handful of paces, safely outside of the monster’s reach.

It looked do...

Micah gasped for breath as he tried to follow the galloping Onkert Daemon.  He’d gotten close enough to the stag to wound it with an air knife, slashing open its leg and leaving a blood trail for the Daemon to follow, but his tiny body couldn’t keep up.  The Onkert barrelled through the forest, digging its armored knuckles into the soil as it shouldered past old growth trees and trampled underbrush.

Already he was only following his summon by sound an...

Micah opened his eyes.  He was thirteen for the third time.  Rolling over, he buried his face in his pillow, and screamed out his frustration.  Two years of biting his tongue and serving as a slave for the Golden Drakes and the Royal Knights was more than enough.  Those last few months when he’d been treated as nothing more than a piece of meat tested him.  It took everything Micah had in him to not mouth off to Knight.  Only the knowing that he ha...

The spell worked.  It took four tries for Micah to get the feel of the ritual and how it interacted with temporal transfer, but it worked.  The one time Micah actively wanted a new spell to not live up to expectations, it performed flawlessly.

Gheb screamed and begged Micah through his gag the entire time, but there wasn’t anything he could do.  Brenden stood just outside of the circle, a summoned daemon at his back just waiting for Micah to hesita...

General Update

Just as a note, starting on July 1 I will be implementing the 'pay on sign up' option.  I usually don't like to do that, but I've had a rash of patreons signing up, reading advanced chapters and then signing off a day later.

It SHOULDN'T impact anyone already signed up, but if it does, let me know so I can refund you.  What it SHOULD do is require new patreons to pay on sign up and at the beginning of the next month thereafter.

Sorry to be draconian about this, I would...

Blessed Time Advanced Chapters Format Update

THE COUNCIL HAS SPOKEN

There appears to be a clear preference toward periodic chapters so that is the way we are heading.

My usual update schedule for Blessed Time (Mondays and Thursdays) will resume once I hit trending (which should be 7/3/20).  I will post advanced chapters in separate entries at that time.

The $2 tier will get 2 chapters ahead (one week).  The $5 tier I will have at 10 chapters ahead (a little more than a month).  My plan is ...
