Quick Discord things

This link is actually best because the instant invite clearly didn't take for existing Patrons when I set it up:   https://discord.gg/3dtt7KQ

Heya,

Just wanted to make sure folks were aware of this, if they've been waiting for Discord invites (I thought it was all automated, silly me) - you need to make sure your Discord is connected to Patreon in your settings.  There's a guide here i...

Tectoy: The Sega Master System and Mega Drive in Brazil (inc. Brazil-exclusive Games) - Kim Justice

Every so often we get a news story about the continued success of the Sega Master System and Mega Drive in Brazil - usually on the release of another new Master System.  Sega lives forever over there!  Why is that?  How do these machines hold their own against the likes of the PS4?  What makes Brazil such a unique video game market?  This video, with the help of a look at the company that makes it all possible as well as games exclusive to the country, hopes to answer th...

New Discord rewards!

Hi all,

I've decided to set up a Discord for Patrons - presumably all of you should be getting an invite of some description or another as I write this...thought it'd be nice as a general chat thing for people.  We'll see how it goes anyway!   Currently anyone who pledges gets a user invite, and $10+ pledges have mod privileges.  It's all baby steps, obviously and I'm kinda flying by the seat of my pants with this thing, but hopefully it all works well and y'all ...

Grange Hill: The Computer Game Review - ZX Spectrum - Kim Justice

Heading back to the world of unlikely licensed games, here's a little
review of the Grange Hill Computer Game, released for the Spectrum (and
others) In 1986, right at the show's peak. With characters like the
almighty Roland, strung out Zammo and psychotic Gripper at the game
maker's disposal...this game has you play as Gonch and thief back a
walkman. Righto. Should be good still! Enjoy!

YouTube Irritations and General Updatings...

Hi folks, just wanted to briefly update on a few things that have come up over the past while.

On the way that videos end:  YouTube has changed shit massively here, as usual...now everyone ought to be using "end screens" for all the usual stuff that's got to be at a video's end.  It kind of makes sense to do it, seeing as the annotations and so forth that I normally use don't work on mobile devices.  But this end screen can apparently be only 20 seconds long, which is annoyi...

The Story and Games of U.S. Gold: 100% All-American Software - Kim Justice

Finally, the U.S Gold video is here! A documentary covering the story of possibly the UK computer scene's most dominant publisher in the 1980's, and plenty of their games - from the classics like Beach-Head and Flashback to...um, World Cup Carnival. A company with a somewhat lousy reputation that is perhaps a little undeserved? Let's see. Enjoy!

The IBM PC 5150 and XT - How IBM "Won" the Computer Wars of the 1980's - Kim Justice

Computers don't get more influential than this one. IBM, a struggling giant by the late 70's, change their entire philosophy and create the IBM PC 5150. The microcomputer masters like Apple and RadioShack don't take their efforts wholly seriously, but the 5150 ends up changing the world forever. This is how IBM won the computer wars of the 1980's...sort of. Enjoy!

The Last Stand of Jack Tramiel: The Atari ST vs The Commodore Amiga - Kim Justice

We couldn't leave Jack Tramiel without a documentary covering his final
act. Having considered retirement for a couple of months after his
unceremonious departure from Commodore, Jack came back at the head of
Atari, seeking revenge. Inevitably, war between the Atari ST and the
Amiga follows. But who came out on top? Enjoy!

In the 2nd part of our look at Jack Tramiel, two more brilliant engineers help to create the Commodore 64, the company's most successful computer. Commodore and Texas Instruments engage in a brutal and bloody price war. Jack ends up getting on the wrong side of Irving Gould for the last time...and we have a bit of a look at the big American crash - the games had already happened, and now it was the computer's turn. JACK ATTACK: The Story of Jack Tramiel at Commodore, Part 1 - Kim Justice

Jack Tramiel really deserves a documentary video all of his own - for all his many faults, the way he treated people, his tightness, his hunger for power...he did a lot. There's no-one quite like him. In Part 1, we look at his origins, the scandal that nearly took him out early, and the work that Chuck Peddle did for Commodore - the PET and the VIC-20. Enjoy!
