I know I said the last designs were final but then I got a BETTER idea, so here we are. Expect to see this in the comic next month!

2015-04-01 06:59:00 +0000 UTC View PostHey guys, as I'm going to be out of town for ECCC for the better part of a week, to be safe I'm going to push Dark Science #43 back a week too. I've been grinding hard to see if I could get the page done in half the time, but it's not working out and I think it's safer (and smarter) to just hold off a week and use that time to build a buffer. Obviously "Dresden Codak" involves more than drawing the comic, and my appearances, conventions and other obligations are still going to cut into that tim...

Hey Seattle, it’s that time again! I’ll be at ECCC this Friday-Sunday (March 27-29) at Topatoco’s booth 1102. I’m right on the sky bridge, so I’m easy to find! Come on over, we’ll have a grand time. Unfortunately, I’ll be out for the better part of a week, so Monday’s comic may be late. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Who's seen this show? I think anyone who likes my approach with Star Wars '99 would really dig it. It actually uses a lot of old Ralph McQuarrie designs, and also essentially pretends the prequels never happened (aside from a couple ties to the Clone Wars cartoon). It's a really, really good show that actually feels like a Star Wars story in a way that I haven't seen since the 90s.

Warmup sketch: the cast of Metropolis! I've only ever drawn the Thin Man before, but man, I love everyone because they're all big cartoons!

Experimenting with some different styles and a completely different painting technique. Awkward, but it's fun to try something else, I rarely get a chance to!

First panel: exactly 55 minutes to finish, a new personal best! Anyone who says you have to sacrifice quality for speed is a liar.

Not based on any particular scene in the comic, just a 30 minute test to see if the lighting, etc. are a good fit.

So I drew all that in one sitting. This is kind of a game changer. I tweeted a little about this, but I'll share it here too: this week I've made some discoveries, namely that the speed of Dresden Codak is held back by psychological issues on my part and not mechanical ones. I don't talk about it online much, but I deal with anxiety, and while it's ever-present, I never realized how much of an impact it had on my work and productivity until now. Just a few changes to organization (with the hel...

I'll let you know soon when the faster update schedule will start (I need to work out logistics with The Minion), but this could very well be the start of something big!

Thought you guys might like this- at the start of each chapter, I put together a basic style guide and reference sheet for the main characters. It's also a time when I get to tweak and update my overall style. The general rule I like to adhere to is to be stylistically consistent within each act/chapter of Dark Science, but allow myself some room for growth and development at the start of a new one. This is pretty much what you see in a lot of graphic novel series and the like, that is to say t...

Completely revisited the design and I think I'm much happier with it. What do you guys think?

So I decided to put together an updated influence map for my work! Here are the artists who are the biggest influence on my visual and storytelling style. Each image size is roughly proportionate to how much I draw from that particular person. 1) F.W. Murnau - One of the pioneers of German Expressionism. His adaptation of Faust is unbelievable. 2) Hiromu Arakawa - Best known for Fullmetal Alchemist, she's an incredible cartoonist with a strong sense of pacing and scale. 3) Moebius - King Shit...

Enjoy this double-sized edition of Dark Science! It was fun and also exhausting to try this format again, but I think it was worth it.

Warmup sketch: no penciling, erasing, or undoing. Just improv design until I decided it was done. Surprisingly difficult for me.

I realized this morning that despite being a pretty big influence on my work, I've never actually drawn anything from Ghost in the Shell, so here's Batou and the Major!
2015-02-05 21:52:53 +0000 UTC View PostThese discussion questions have been really great this week! I've got one more for you: who's your favorite fictional cyborg? 1 - They must be composed of both organic and mechanical components. No clones or robots! 2 - You can only choose one! Mine's probably Inspector Gadget, as he's one of the few examples of having prosthetics that a) didn't make him "less human" and b) made him AWESOME.
2015-02-04 22:43:11 +0000 UTC View PostThis is more off-beat for Dresden Codak, but I have my reasons! Who's your favorite superhero? For me, my favorite comic growing up was Thor, but if I'm just going by the character, my all-time favorite is Spider-Man. I feel like he's the ultimate mastery of the traditional superhero concept- they took the Superman/Batman trope and turned it on its head to make it more about the person and how he's affected by the simple fact of being extraordinary. Even though DC's characters are more iconic,...
