Ch. 19 – Invictus (V)

Tinuriel took the lead in steering the cart while Roy sat back. Melanie was huddled behind him, and Felix was sitting atop the statue, keeping his eyes peeled for any sign of danger. No more ambushes for us.

Roy had told them his story. As a child, he was screened and found to be worthy of military or magical service. He was sent to Wilderstone, a part of Tier five where the Invictus Military Academy was set up. He quickly rose the ranks and was given early training in command ...

Ch. 18 – Invictus (IV)

Felix had adjusted to the shades of red-hue dark vision and steadily descended. He quaffed several Vigor Elixirs and used Regenerate to his Health. He also drank down several Anima Elixirs to at least get to some decent numbers on his bars.

The slope grew more and more steep and he had to use his knife as a sort of climbing pick as he made his way down. It leveled out after the steep drop and he continued forward. The tunnel en...

Ch. 17 – Invictus (III)

Felix had to take a step back as the billowing blackness poured out of Roy as screams echoed in the space around them. Tinuriel took up a ready stance with her weapon, and Lucifer instinctively ducked into Felix’s body, merging with him once more. Melanie cowered behind Tinuriel as the darkness expanded further, surrounding them all wholly.

But then, it stopped. The blackness turned to a light grey, before slowly brightening to a calm, soothing silvery-white. Roy’s hair turned light...

Ch. 16 – Invictus (II)

The four arrived at The Dark Ascent, a walled city at the base of the cliff. The cliff itself only had one structure flush against it – the elevator going up. There was a huge, one-hundred-foot-high wall that was easily twenty feet thick that ringed the entirety of the cliffs leading to the next Tier. Roy explained that the whole of the cliffs leading to Dirge was ringed with walls, and even the different parts of Invictus were split off by enormous defensive walls – they would see a few ...

Lucifer!

Already on it! Regenerate.

Felix pulled the crossbow bolt out of his eye as his Vigor drained to increase his Health. Thanks to Regenerate being at Rank 2, his obliterated eye was restored, as was whatever part of his brain was mush.

Felix grabbed Tinuriel and got to the other side of the statue as more bol...

Roy gestured to the corpses that Tinuriel finished dragging over, “Check them for information.” He knelt and began rummaging through their pockets. “Nothing. Again.”

“This has happened before?” Tinuriel asked as she put her hood back up.

“Yes. Melanie and Traker were attacked once when they were fleeing Ethdellin, again on Mercantus, and now here.”

Ethdellin is Tier one, the very top. If we get to the top of the Soul Spire there, we solve a Crisis. Mercan...

Felix woke up to the very eerie sight of Tinuriel standing in the corner. “Good morning,” he muttered as he rolled out of bed.

She nodded tersely, “You talk in your sleep. Otherwise, you remain still.”

“Good to know. What was I saying?”

“Something about a penny.”

Felix grimaced, “That would be my sister.” He stood up and rolled his shoulders, feeling several satisfying ‘pops’ as he stretched. “She’s back in my original ‘Verse.”

The ascent was rapid, and as they crested the Tier’s edge, they found themselves amongst rocky crags in a mountainous region. Terraces were carved out of some of the rocky faces to provide for farming, and forts dotted the tops of some of the rocky escarpments. They were immediately confronted by guards at the top, but at the sight of Felix’s sealed document, they were let past and directed to travel along the main road.

The long hours passed without event until the duo arrived at a...

Ch. 11 - Ascent (II)

The creatures flying overhead looked to be about the size of a small car. A large, scaly body with a set of wickedly sharp, clawed talons. A long, sinuous neck and a pair of leathery wings made them appear to look like traditional Western-style dragons minus the front legs. They were a mix of colors; two were green, and one was brown – and larger than the green ones.

The Wyverns plummeted down from the sky, rocketing towards the duo. Felix pulled his bow and released a shot, which the...

As they trekked upward, Tinuriel peppered Felix with questions. Thanks to his earlier VBV Function addition, she knew of the Multiverse and what Felix was, as well as what Lucifer really was, but she didn’t know anything about him. And, it also instilled the colloquialism of using ‘Verse instead of fully saying Universe.

“What was it like in your ‘Verse?”

“To be honest,” Felix began, “It was difficult. We were poor. My sister was – is – sick.” He paused for a...

Felix went over to Tinuriel as she slammed her blade into the ground and drew in deep breaths. “Are you okay?”

She waved him away, “I’m fine!” She took off bits of her armor and dropped them on the ground as she sat on the grass. “Just…give me a minute.”

Felix nodded and crouched next to her, “Good job getting the killing blow.” He knew he had killed the thing in the end, but he wanted her to be flattered.

She glanced at him and the hint of a grin graced ...

The two made their way stealthily through the forest. They scrabbled up trees when a large group of Kobolds was making their way through the undergrowth, and a few re-uses of the Detect Object power, along with hours of travel, led the two to an enormous, singular tree that shot up into the sky. “Why couldn’t we see this from further away?” Felix asked.

Tinuriel smirked, “Dungeons are hard to find. They can masque their presence.” She pointed to a slightly glowing, purple line...

Ch. 7 - Avelion (II)

The trio made their way through the large city. Tinuriel briefly explained that the entire city was called Avelion Primus and was built around the only path up to the next Tier. An inner gate guarded that side, but otherwise, they used the cliffs of the next Tier itself to provide back protection.

They arrived at a large, wooden, three-story building with a large tower on top. Tinuriel turned and put her hand out, “Knife.”

Felix nodded and handed it to her, the elven warrior p...

Now arriving in ‘Verse #89,750 – Heficyre.

Felix landed on the soft grass and was immediately hit with the sweet scent of flowers in the breeze. The portal snapped shut behind him, and he glanced down, seeing that his weapon had altered to be more medieval in appearance, and his armor was now some type of hardened leather. He felt giddy with anticipation. “I’m in a fantasy world!”

Interlude - Void Between 'Verses

The grey void of space was like the last one that first brought him to the Death World, but he was able to feel something solid under his feet instead of falling. Behind him, he could see a pair of portals. One showed a grassy plain and had #89,750 above it. The one he just exited showed the scarred landscape of the Death World in the center of the crater and read #68,909 above it. “What happened? Why did we not just go there?” Felix asked.

Felix kept walking for hours, snacking on another of the moss chunks when he got hungry despite the horrid flavor and texture. The golden line continued onwards, hugging the mountain, but something caught his eye.

He saw some type of rounded, metallic container that jutted out of the landscape maybe a quarter mile away. The dim light reflected off of some glassy surface. He walked over and saw that it wasn’t just some type of cargo container – it was a half-buried mechanical combat ...

The wall shattered with an enormous crash and the beast came fully into view. A bear the size of a small car. Its fur was mottled green and brown and it was covered in pustules. There were portions of its flesh that were hanging off it and the long, wicked claws carved grooves in the ground where it walked. One eye was missing, leaving a deep, black socket. The teeth were chipped and cracked, giving the creature a ghastly appearance. It was emaciated – ravenous. It roa...

The voice seemingly came from inside his head and was monotone, and male. Felix gasped as the sphere of light flew into his chest. It felt like he had just sunk beneath the waters of a perfectly warm bath. He felt giddy and laughed as he felt a tickling sensation all over. He saw a whole kaleidoscope of colors before the light faded. A small message appeared in his vision, just like he was reading from a computer s...

His descent came to an end as the grey void suddenly vanished and he fell a few inches, finding solid footing. The first thing he noticed was the air – it tasted metallic, and the scent of sulfur reached his nostrils. Even breathing through his nose didn’t help as the rotten egg odor made him gag and throw up. Wiping his mouth he looked around. The desolate landscape he stood on was naught but cracked, black and brown earth. There were enormous craters and pits, and off to his left, a sma...

Epilogue - Evolution's End

The Sun

Azurianth and Chrystalis walked through the lengthy corridors of the new hardlight citadel on The Sun. The couple had been reunited after the former released the latter post-Lux’s defeat. Vythin had entrusted them with protecting Heimfold from aberrations and other threats, renegotiating several divine pacts and treaties to ensure they could move about.

In addition to that, Azurianth was given the monumental task of trying to incorporate The Dragon God’s new religious ...

Chapter 72 - Finality and Fate

Rose’s soul left her body, departing The Sun and traveling back to Heimfold, to her second phylactery. She arrived at The Shadow Isle in Moonsorrow Bay, and reconstituted her form. The dark cave was impossible to see in – unless one was undead or devoted wholly to Umbra. She opened the emergency crate and put on a set of robes, grabbed a spell tool in the form of an intricate bracelet, and slipped on her secondary phylactery-ring.

My last one.

She couldn’t afford to...

Echo cloaked his allies with Bulwark and had pre-cast protection Affinity spells on the trio. For Rose, he placed an Umbral Eminence on her so that she would be able to help in the fight and not be blasted instantly and turned to ash. He had limned Fumi and his weapons in every Affinity he could imagine that was not light and were not direct opposites. The prismatic spectrum flickered along their weapons as the crackling Quintessence flowed from them.

Lux flew to meet them in the air. A...

Fumi tapped her katana’s sheath on the floor, “You betrayed us. Tricked us.”

“I want to hear it from you.”

Vythin stood at a large conference table on Haven. All of the Destined Pantheon were present – save for Kalinor - as well as Umbra and Aqua in elemental avatar form. Malvir and Liam finished out the small council that had convened, and Vythin addressed the gathered Gods. “That is where it stands currently. Caeli is not a part of the equation anymore. Terra and Ignis will not be involved, either.”

Slate sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “I hate leaving Heimfold to stagna...

Echo was as prepared as he could be. He had cast several spells on himself and Rose, as well as activated Bulwark. And they flew up higher and higher until they were well above the peak.

The top of the mountain had been transmuted to be a flat surface. The snow was cleared off. And at the far side a...

Rose looked on as Echo descended from the atmosphere, stabbing wildly down into the New God until it stopped moving. He reached his hand into its body and withdrew something that glimmered, chomping it as his mouth and face distorted into that of a monstrous wolfish creature.

Then, he exploded in a fury of snow and ice. Rose tried to track him as he fell – an enormous ball of rime and frost that descended from the heavens – but she couldn’t see him within the mass. She quickly use...

The duo left Saint’s Hold and rocketed across the sky heading West. It was mid-morning, and The Sun and Inferno were blazing overhead in the middle of building season – the equivalent of Summer on Heimfold. The travel was silent as the kilometers passed under them.

“There they are!”

Echo and Rose turned as a group of one thousand people began flying up to attack them. Fanatical worshippers of Lux, possessed by her angels to grant them flight and increased stats. In a group...
