Easter Break Update

Hello everyone, I'm just letting everyone know that I've been at my inlaws for this Easter long weekend, so I've had limited time writing. I'm away from the house most of today so there won't be a chapter released today.

Regular updates resume tomorrow. Thanks once again for all the support, and for those of you who celebrate, happy Easter!

Tismon.

Chapter 116: Salvaging a Hopeless Trial

Jordan was all but giddy as she watched the pseudo-trail unfold, all the while stuffing pits of popcorn into her mouth. Sometimes she’d laugh so hard that bits and pieces of kernels would spill from her grasp, and a poor Central worker would have to quickly come over to clean up.

“Are you sure you don’t want some yourself?” Jordan asked, shaking the paper bag filled with buttery confectionery, “These are remarkably good given the human’s limited ability to do anything useful...

Chapter 115: Troubles Back Home

Five days had passed since my arrival at the Restus’ hometown, and I had made quite a lot of progress. As I had expected, the Admin did make an announcement that night, and I was able to stalk, er, I mean follow the strongest bunch of Aspirants and chat with him in private. Let’s just say that they will be more than cooperative with me from now on, and were more than happy to do what I instructed. It’ll still be a few weeks before I see the results of those instructions, but I had my ho...

Chapter 114: Growing the Faction

The Aspirant’s eyes dilated and shouts of elation erupted immediately when they felt Noe’s skill at work. I had to take some time just to calm them down. Damn, they were kind of hard to deal with even when I didn’t make them eat a cookie. I’ll have to discipline them properly later on.

“What do you want us to do?” a slightly larger individual asked, I could tell that he was doing his best from yelling and bouncing around.

“I was made to believe that your group,” I ...

Chapter 113: The Start of a New Faction

I watched from my burrow as Restus ran back to his hovel. True to his words, the training hall was small and dilapidated, as was fitting his position in the Restus society. It was scarcely more than just some mud walls and clay huts, with a large, open central area for what I can only guess was fights. It was well past midday now, so Bakren had to enter each hut and all but kick the others awake.

“Brethren!” he screamed, “Awaken! I bring great news!”

The Restus started to ...

Chapter 112: The First Recruit

The Restus’ jaws clamped shut. The imp did say that this species was inherently slow to trust, being a race that focused almost all of its attention on fighting and improving oneself. They had pitifully small amounts of things that a human would call leisure activities, let alone the concept of doing something just for fun and pleasure. Even worse, friendships were exceedingly rare in their society.

Once again, these are traits that I can use against them. Just because the Restu...

Chapter 111: The Seeds of Sabotage

I felt a little better knowing that my situation in Pandora was taken care of, even if I had to make regular visits back there to terrorize the Aspirants as Doctor Walter. The Abyss guild needed its prestige back, and soon if we wanted to survive what’s to come. At least I no longer had to worry about leading a triple life, as if having two identities to keep track of wasn’t bad enough already. Now I could focus all my attention on screwing over the Restus. But there was a problem.

Chapter 110: Reminiscing with the Director

I bent forward and cracked my back as I felt the rest of my body ache from sprinting around Pandora like a madman. My god, why does everyone run so damn fast here? I probably wouldn’t have caught most of them if they weren’t hampered by my skill’s passive and my night vision. I was starting to wish that Dr. Walter also converted some of my Charisma into Agility because I was woefully slow as the physician.

“Perhaps you should exercise more,” Molly said with a small shake...

Chapter 109: The Night of Frozen Fear (Aspirant POV)

It was an unusually chilly night in Pandora. The few Aspirants who were still roaming the streets at this hour had to bundle up in an attempt to get the chill out of their bones, although some of Pandora’s inhabitants struggled to even do that. The class divide had gotten worse in the last few months, especially with the new arrivals, and the people still on the streets were only here because they had no where else to be. Some, like Alexander and his rag tag group, had struggled to even aff...

Chapter 108: Information and Infiltration

With a solid plan in mind, I just needed to speak with Central’s staff to obtain the necessary information about the foe. I doubt they’ll hide that kind of thing from me; it wasn’t like I it was a secret, or that it would help me beat them in any meaningful way.

Noe, can you contact the Site’s staff through the Trash Matrix?

“Affirmative,” she responded, “Site Manager Jordan has given you access to internal communications, note that all communications done t...

Chapter 107: Change of Plans

Noe, make sure all of my Charisma-based passives are on. Make my voice commanding. I’m planning to make this short and sweet.

And that was true, mainly because I didn’t plan to give any exact information to the Apsirants, and more importantly, to the Admin about my plans. I had to change the parameters that I was dealt in order to win against the Overseer, which meant formulating a better plan once I knew all the tools I had at my disposal. I still needed to see what help A...

Mid-Month Update!

Hello everyone, and once again I would like to thank the folks who have decided to support my writing career. The feedback from the last arc was amazing, and it's given me a clear idea of where I should take this series, so expect more sneaky adventures from our favourite "Unwilling" Eldritch protagonist. Volume 2 is also approaching its conclusion!

I know I stated that writing a chapter a day was not feasible, and I still think that is the case in part, but I have been feeling strangel...

Chapter 106: Meeting the New Staff

I cursed out loud when the Overseer was well and truly gone. God damn it! I never felt so helpless in a battle of wits before. That piece of crap had the right answer for any of our concerns, and I didn’t know enough about the laws of Central to refute any of his claims. Worse yet, he had all the time in the world to prepare for whatever shitty schemes he had up his sleeves, while I had next to none.

The only assurance I had was that I had Noe up and functioning again, but I was...

Chapter 105: The Overseer’s Plan

Bonus Chapter! Gotta get caught up for those days I missed when I was sick!

“Right,” Rogue said, his entire body spoke of how little he wanted to see the Overseer, even if it was a proxy body, “Let’s get it over with. God, I hate that smileball.”

“I should head back myself,” Xalla added, “Just leaving for a few minutes puts me under scrutiny lately. Take care of yourself, Walter. I’ve got a break coming up in a few Earth weeks, maybe w...

Chapter 104: The New Administration

Once the last of our guild members left, Jae-Hyun sat back down on his chair and gave me a tired look. He seemed oddly overwhelmed, oddly vulnerable. I wasn’t used to the indomitable Regressor look like this.

“Hey,” I said, “Don’t worry too much, the situation’s not ideal, but I can fix things in no time. I might have to use more drastic measures, but it’ll be done.”

“No,” he mumbled before shaking his head, “It’s not just that, it’s… never mind. Things...

Chapter 103: Changes in Pandora

It was that fucking Overseer again. I should have known that the ending of that Trial was too easy, that piece of shit must have sped up time on Pandora since the Regressor was in the same Trial as I was. I was getting sick and tired of his meddling.

Jae-Hyun: Stay put, Walter and I will try to get back as soon as we can. Is the Father with you?

Yoona: Yeah, we just found him. He’ll get us caught up on what you guys went through.

Chapter 102: The End of the Third Trial

The rest of the day passed by remarkably fast. After my nap, which lasted much longer than I anticipated, I had to hurry over to the Regressor for another session of treatment. Of course, I didn’t tell him the whole truth, but I did let him know that I was close to clearing the stage.

“You’re sure you can clear it by the end of the day?” Jae-Hyun asked me, his condition didn’t seem to get any worse, which was a good sign. Whatever treatment he was undergoing must have paused f...

Chapter 101: Alliances and Adversaries

“Congratulations, my Host,” Noe’s voice interrupted, “You have achieved the clear conditions for the Third Stage. The Trash Matrix wishes to initiate end-of-trial procedures, does the host accept?”

I frowned. What would happen if I don’t accept?

I still had some things to do before I left the Trial, I couldn’t just disappear right away. My main goal for helping out, aside from just being nice to Alice, was to establish a proper relationship with the Director...

Chapter 100: The Culmination of Luck

It took 29 hours total, practically all of my Luck Charges, give or take, and I felt like I was about to collapse at any moment then, but whatever magic Noe managed to do was enough to imbue life into what was once a collection of spare body parts. But that was all it was; the body was alive, it could think and even talk, but it felt… lifeless. I looked at the creature and frowned.

It looked back at me with its emotionless eyes, as if judging me, cursing me for creating something so d...

Chapter 99: Upgrades and Operations

I woke up on the day of the scheduled operation to the soothing voice of Noe as she informed me that her upgrade had finished. I had originally planned to stay up until the very moment of her completion, but last night had been so hectic that I all but passed out after dinner. I wasn’t sure what the hell was going on, but practically every Aspirant who had even a moderately useful ability tried to get out then.

Something must have spurred them on, but I wasn’t sure what. The Regress...

Chapter 98: Everyday Operations at Hope’s Memorial (Hospital POV)

Rumors of Dr. William Walter’s planned surgery spread throughout the hospital like a wildfire. It was the hottest topic among all the staff, with the best Doctors and Physicians lining up to see if they would be selected as a part of his groundbreaking procedure. Although everyone present feared the Director, the staff working at Hope’s Memorial were first and formally trained medical personnel, and to have a one in a lifetime opportunity to create a new life under the famed Dr. Walter wa...

Chapter 97: The Meeting with the Patient

The morning came soon after, and although my bed was small, it was surprisingly comfortable as well. I got one of the best nights of rest in a very long time and had almost overslept if not for Noe waking me up on time. I finished my morning ablutions quickly and headed out to meet up with the Regressor, as per his instructions.

Once again I was dismayed by just how little work I actually had to do during the day. Aside from reporting whoever breaks the rules, I just had to oversee thre...

Chapter 96: A Night of Contemplation

The two of us left the labs and the Director locked the place up again after giving me the password. It didn’t take us long to walk over to Alice’s bedroom from there; the girl was already in bed when we got there. She quickly got out of her blankets when she saw who was by her mom’s side, although I could tell that she was starting to doze off.

Now that I had a closer look at the room, I realized that it was pretty standard in terms of furnishings. Most noticeably, there were box...

Chapter 95: The End of the First Day

The Director’s whole vibe changed instantly. She stopped chugging down those drinks of hers and stared at me hard, “How sure are you that you can do this, William?”

I thought about it for a second. With that many luck charges, I should be able to bullshit my way to success somehow if I had the other people do most of the hard work. If I just used luck charges during key procedures, giving directions and making random corrections as needed… yeah, I think it’s possible.

Chapter 94: The Director’s Report

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into the dreaded Director’s office, but I remembered the role that I cast myself into, so I strolled in as if it was my own office. As long as I don’t react negatively, no matter what the Director looks like, I should be in the clear. Aside from myself, Alice and Molly, the other prisoner- er, I mean staff and patients looked like they’d die from stress at any moment. There was clearly something they feared here, and I was moments away from finding o...

Chapter 93: Communications and Communions

Once Henry was finished dictating what felt like his entire life story back to me, I had one of the hospital staff restrain him and sent to Alice and Molly. I did tell them that we would present the escaped patient to her mom and I wasn’t about to break a promise to a child.

I could summarize Henry’s information into a few main points. First of all, the way they were tasked with leaving this hospital, AKA the clear conditions of this Trial, was simply to get oneself out of the confi...

Chapter 92: Integrations and Information

Finding a free operating room was easy enough, the other doctors and nurses were more than glad to and so was restraining the patient on the operating table. What was challenging was trying to get the man to talk at all, since he was completely unconscious. His wounds had stabilized with the elixir I gave him earlier, but the amount of punishment that the patient’s body had suffered was too much for his mind to handle. It seemed like the man, who I found out was named Henry, simply didn’t...

Chapter 91: A Game of Hide and Seek

Tismon notes: Hey guys, I'm still sick, but I'll upload a chapter today. Will see how much I can write today and tomorrow but might need to slow down, but I am getting better!

I rounded the corner to where the cemetery's main entrance was and strolled inside the enclosed space, making sure to close and lock the gothic gate behind me, as was expected from a respected member of this hospital. The graveyard itself was pretty impressive, with old, expertly crafte...
