Hail Caesar - McCarthyism, metatextuality, and why Hollywood is sacred

Happy New Year Everyone! Let’s Start 2019 the best way possible shall we? Let’s talk about Hail Caesar and why it’s about Cultural FUCKING MARXISM.

So let’s talk about Hail Caesar, but also about Hail Caesar: A Tale of The Christ. There are some films that really just teach you how to read them, and Hail Caesar might be the one of the best examples I’ve encountered. Like a cryptic crossw...

Mailing rewards and 2019 game plan

Hey my lovely lovely people,

Happy New Year and all my best wishes to you! Let's talk about what's going on!

Natalie and I are about to return from our break, which means on Friday (the 4th) the Quet Streem will be returning. Be there or be sad.

I've just mailed a bunch of the hand-written thank you letters, my hand is still cramping, and they will be arriving with some of you as fast as your respective mail systems work! For now I've (mostly) only mailed the notes for patro...

Now that things are good

How many times have you been the person saying “It’s 2018, things are better now”, or even “It’s 1970, nobody is racist any more”. Or if you haven’t, how many times have you been arguing against the person telling you “It’s 294, Diocletian has implemented the tetrarchy and now everything’s fine. Rome’s going to be fine forever.”

Well not literally that, but you get the gist, right?

Francis Fukuyama argued in The End of History and the Last Man that...

Born to the purple, or how Black Panther uses costume colours

Porphyrogenitus was a greek word that was somewhat of a slang term. It meant “born to the purple” a bit like our “born with a silver spoon in your mouth”. Purple, a rich and rare colour to produce a dye for, was understood in many ancient societies - Egyptian, Persian, Roman and Greek - to be the colour of royalty.

The last queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a descendant of Ptolemy, and Ptolemy, and Cleopatra, and Ptolemy, and Ptolemy. Real talk he...

Small charging update

Hi everyone!

I literally didn't know about up-front charging before, and I would have had it on before if I'd known, so I'll be changing to that model from January 1st. I'm waiting until January first because I know I've gained a few supporters in the last couple of weeks and they won't have been expecting to be debited before Jan 1st. That's all!

Thanks again to all of you, your support really means the world to me!

Cheers,
Eric

Q&A - submit questions! (+updates)

Just a reminder, the tier reward for $5+ patrons to submit Questions for a Q&A is not limited to one per - You can submit as many questions as you like, via Patreon messenger or however you like. I'll select 20 Questions I think are interesting and make a 20 Questions Q&A video, and I'll do that again whenever I have 20 good questions to use.
As I'm choosing what questions to answer it's extremely subjective and arbitrary, but chances are the only reason I won't answer your question i...

Socialism in Space

My name is Jean-luc Picard, and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat on his brow? NO says the man on Vulcan it belongs to science and reason! NO says the man on Kronos it belongs to the most honourable warriors! NO says the Borg it belongs to everyone! I rejected those answers, and chose the impossible. I chose… space, the final frontier. Where no youtuber would fear the censor, where no gamer would be bound by petty feminism, where Curio can watch as much Kilian...

Bioshock 2 is incredible don't @ me

I’ve seen the 2015 horror film The Boy more times than I am proud of. I really love that movie. Everything about it is insanely funny to me. If you aren’t familiar, The Boy is about a woman who has to come take care of the son of an old rich couple who live in a mansion in the english countryside (nonspecific). It turns out the son is a doll, and she starts to think the doll is haunted by the ghost of the actual son who supposedly died, but no, the actual son is living in th...

Mythologising family (Halloween come-down de-spook)

Okay, so Halloween is over now. We all did some dressing up and got in the festive mood. I released my Bloodborne Spooktacular and everybody loved it. We’ve all gotten a bit spooked, now let’s all take a breath, and get de-spooked. The best way for us to get de-spooked is if we look at something that’s spooky with an ending that relieves us of all the tension. Better than that, let’s look at two things like that, and just for kicks, I’ll apply a normalising media analy...
