March Q&A - leave your questions here!

Hey!

Hope you've all been well! I wanted to post this up and start gathering some of your questions for the next Q&A, I'll post up the date of the livestream itself soon.

Things have been pretty intense for me this month, thanks to all of you for supporting me as I try to find a good balance! I've been getting a few suggestions for things you'd all like to see, but I'll make a separate thread for that as I definitely want to know what would interest you moving forward. I had o...

Wartortle - PSD (Updated w/Painted Version)

Hey!

(updated with painted version as well - wartorter.psd)

Here's something I did today for Pokemon day, taking advantage of those hashtags on twitter and all that. Always really loved this character and wanted to do a classic instruction booklet style illustration of em. I included two PSD's with all layers intact. Should give you an idea of how I go about getting the watercolor effect with my clip studio brushes.

Hope it helps!

STEP BY STEP - Spider-Man Noir #3

Hey!

Hope you're all doing well. Here's the breakdown of my latest cover for Spider-Man Noir #3, I attached the PSD of all these steps into a single file incase it's too hard to read this all on here. Below is a basic process gif of it all as well.

Have a great weekend!

Gettin' Solid - color - work in progress

Hey!

So, for some reason, I hardly got any client feedback today so I spent most of the day getting this all pulled together with colors. It's not done yet, I still have to paint over pretty much everything, but it's definitely a lot closer. Feeling good about it so far, it's got a ways to go but I think it's not too far off now.

I'm gonna hold off on process stuff for this until it's nearly complete just so I have beginning to end steps all ready to share.

Thanks for your s...

Gettin' Solid - tank addition

Hey!

Hope you're all doin well! I'm back working on the MGS piece, got the tank added here, now all I gotta do is round out the bottom with soldiers and texture/color and paint the rest together. Can't wait to get this wrapped up. I'll have more process images up showing how I color it all soon.

I'm gonna go pass out, have a great night/day

February Q&A - thanks for coming!

Hey!

Thanks to everyone who made the stream tonight, I appreciate it! If you missed it, here's the archived stream with all your questions answered. I had to get a little whispery at the end because everyone went to sleep, but it was great to address all of your questions, hope this helps!

Garfield - NSFW - Berserk Tribute w/PSD

Hey!

Hope you're all well! I've been pretty busy with family and finishing up my remaining client work, but every night after I've been working this up, meant to release it yesterday(unholy Monday) but I just didn't have time.

Anyway, obviously this is a Garfield comic which isn't very serious, but I approached this one with how I genuinely would ink a comic to hopefully give you some insight into that process. This one in specific is a tribute to Kentaro Miura, creator of B...

High Res - Chrono Trigger Portraits

Hey!

So, as a thank you to everyone who is supporting I wanted to offer up all of my Chrono Trigger high res portraits for download, including two portraits with full layers( in another post! I exceeded Patreon's file size limits for a single post) for you to comb through(Glenn & Robo). Feel free to download the attachments for personal use, please do not resell these. I don't mind you having these printed for yourself in whatever manner you like as long as it's for you and not for ...

Concept Art - character portrait

Hey!

So, today I thought I'd upload something akin to what I'd do on either my own project or as a preliminary step on a client project. For this piece here this is for a personal project that may or may not come to fruition, who knows! I often work in this style because it's quicker for me to draw and plan colors as well as define what the character is wearing a bit better for myself before jumping into any kind of painting process. Working with lines and watercolor style washes keeps ...

Video - wolverine sped up process

Hey!

I recorded this tonight as a test for how I'd go about recording my process in the future. There were some small color errors caused by OBS(the screen recording program) so I'll have to adjust for that in future videos that are a bit longer. This is the same process I detailed in my post about the brush uses. But here's a repost of the steps -

Here's what my process generally looks like

- Sketch and Final Drawing in Clip Studio

- Save as PSD and open in Photoshop<...

Gettin' Solid - adding the helicopter!

Hey!

Well, some progress comin along! I worked up the Mil Mi-24 helicopter into the composition. These kinds of things are always my least favorite to draw and work up. I've never been super comfortable drawing vehicles and all that, especially ones that are based in reality. Thankfully all that's left is the tank and then some environment bits and action lines and all that. Should come together pretty quickly once I get the tank sorted out, I'm really happy to get through the helicopte...

Clip Studio Brushes

Hey!

So, I'm attaching here the only 2 brushes I use in Clip Studio. I'm going to give you all a quick walkthrough in video form soon as I can, but here's the basics of it -

Dopest Pencil - This brush I use to ink pretty much all my comic work, I find that it makes a really nice pencil texture but also a nice ink texture. It definitely serves more than one purpose. But if you're looking to do tight comic lines, this is my absolute favorite brush, I honestly can't find anything bet...

Gettin' Solid - Metal Gear Rex

Hey!

Hope you've all been good! I worked up Rex today, I had done all the lines last night but my Clip Studio froze haha, so I had to redo the whole thing this morning. Also, I spent some time rendering out the genome soldiers. Now all thats left is the helicopter on the right, tank on the left and more genome soldiers on the right to balance what I did on the left.

Thanks for your support! Can't wait to wrap this one up!

Gettin' Solid - liquid & genome soldiers

Hey!

Here's where I'm at as of this morning on the MGS piece. I'm pretty excited to finally add in Liquid and start rounding out the bottom with the extra genome soldiers. Baby steps, but it's comin along!

I'll work things in grayscale at this point forward having had some success with the look of it on Otacon from the previous post. What I end up doing with the b&w is laying it as a multiply layer over top a flat color with some textured brushes to add a bit of noise to it so...

Gettin' Solid - forward progress!

Hey!

Took a little time tonight to start working in another character, this time I added Otacon. I'm gonna sit with the approach for a minute and see if it all still makes sense and then continue on from here. I plan on doing a slight rendering pass(some of it I already added to Gray Fox's helmet/arm) on the rest to unify the whole thing. Lose some of the messier lines and make it stronger overall.

Thanks for your support! Can't wait to finish this one.

February Q&A - leave your questions here!

Hey!

I wanted to drop this here so we can get some questions together for a future Youtube live type thing, I'll go through and address everything as I draw(or something along those lines). Eventually I'll get a camera setup with one of those porn ring lights so you can see it reflected in my eyes for ultimate effect. No, but really, I do plan on getting video fireside chats goin in the future!

So, if you have questions about art, self publishing your own books, comics, writing co...

BEHIND THE SCENES - Robot Wars

Some of you may have seen the Terminator Dark Fate poster I put up a few months back, if not, you can check it out-

I wanted to share some of the initial roughs I did for the poster, these were all done just as loose ideas to show what direction we might end up going in for the final poster. Generally when I work like this my original direction for the poster becomes altered due to the amount ...

Ok, so, I want to get this Patreon rolling, let's start by taking that beautiful beautiful cash you've given me and as much as I want to eat it all for my lizard brain, let's instead finish this finally!

This image has been weighing on me since last September, it must be finished. I really wanted to but right after I started this I began work on that Terminator Dark Fate poster I po...

STEP BY STEP - spider-man noir #2 cover

Hey, what's up, it's me, Dave. First of all, thank you so much for supporting me in this new venture, I'm super pumped about it and can't wait to see where this all takes me. With your support I'll finally get the opportunity to just invest in myself and in turn be able to give back to you. I wanted to start today by sharing a bit of my process, I don't often post this type of thing but here we are, hidden, behind the curtain so you can see everything I do before delivering the final product....
