AGATHA! Dame Agatha Christie was a British novelist. Her books were and are so popular that she's credited with being the best-selling fictional author in history, having flogged 2 billion books. Primarily known for her characters Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple, Christie's works concern murder mysteries with increasingly bizarre plots. She's always been a staple in my family's viewing and reading, to the point that I've always seen her stories as sort of puzzles that a person could potentiall...

...and it's a Full Of Bard starring Nova 'Willy' Shakes. William Shakespeare is a name celebrated and feared the world over, as hoards of school children are forced to read his great works and think 'wtf is that'. I've invited Nova onto the pod today to take a trip down memory lane while we discuss which of Shakespeare's plays we studied at school and why his contribution to the world of literature is so important....

Oh stop it, this is so cute. Educating Rita is a 1983 British drama film starring Julie Walters as a gobby lady who just wants to learn about poetry for some reason. It's one of those films where very little actually happens but it's also wildly poignant, as the brassy and common-as-all-arse Rita faces off with a drunk university tutor played by Michael Caine. When I first saw this, I didn't stop proclaiming, "Wouldn't you simply die without Mahler?" for about a week...

In June of 1979, a large fire destroyed the ghost train ride at Australian amusement park, Luna Park, resulting in the deaths of 7 people. I'd heard of this tragedy before but Netflix recently dropped a documentary called Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire which interviews survivors, witnesses and police officials all linked with the disaster and hints that the officially determined cause for the fire might've been an absolute pile.
This one is a bit heavy so skip i...

Rosemary & Thyme is a British mystery drama and quite the most preposterous thing you could ever watch. It's described as a 'cosy', which is a work of fiction that does away with sex and violence, in this case, in favour of ludicrous storylines. The two leading ladies are gardeners (THEY'RE ALSO CALLED ROSEMARY & THYME!) who solve murders that seem to keep happening around them. It's quite one of my favourite televisual treats and it's soon to be one of yours...

Simone is a 2002 American science-fiction romp of ridiculous proportions, starring Al Pacino and the woman from The 40-Year-Old Virgin who wants to steal all your crap. Conceivably the most far-fetched story about a director secretly using an AI actress to make award-winning films, it may have once been daft but today seems more like a horror than a comedy. Nova absolutely hated how implausible this film was when she first saw it, while I ap...

Paranormal Activity is an American found-footage horror franchise that managed to do the seemingly impossible after an absolute slew of shite was released following the explosion of The Blair Witch Project. It took a style of filmmaking that felt like it was a one-time, lightning-in-a-bottle, could-never-work-again moment and turned it on its arse. Like most horror franchises they squeezed every last drop out of the concept and dumped it in ...

Scary Movie is an American horror parody franchise that sat at the pinnacle of humour and culture for teenagers around the world in the early 2000s. Led for the first 4 movies by stunning performances from Anna Faris and Regina Hall, who were strangely overlooked by The Academy, each film in the franchise would spoof popular horror properties. I'll obviously talk about the 4th and 5th but we can pretend they don't exist. Even the 3rd one is a bit of a dog but it open...

Final Destination is an American horror franchise that as of this ep, consists of 5 movies and a lot of hot air. Spanning the naughties (otherwise known as the decade for which taste was completely absent), the premise of each film centres on a barely-fleshed out character having a premonition of a deadly disaster. Having survived the disaster, a group of morons would then try and outwit 'death' who was consistently coming up with increasingly-elaborate methods to ha...

Saw is an American horror movie franchise that year after year would serve up the most farfetched plots about a terminally ill man who produces complex murder-machinery, framed within seizure-inducing editing. Of course it's absolute grade-A cack but GOD did we always come back for more.
