Kay grinned as he continued to address the crowd that had gathered in the Avalon’s main square; as he continued his speech, “And it is now my pleasure to announce that after weeks of discussion and planning, the constitution that forms the government of Avalon is complete!” He turned and took the completed and signed document from the aide next to him and held it up for the crowd to see. It was one of multiple copies, with the original somewhere safe, just in case.
The crowd burst...

“Great One.” A woman crawled into the presence of the man and bowed her head to the ground at his feet.
He turned and looked down at where she was cowering, with a frown of disgust on his face. The many and varied beings that came to serve him were all strange in their own ways, twisted by the corruption that brought them to him in the first place, but the ones that worshiped him like some form of deity were the ones he liked the least.
“What is it?”
“Word has fina...

“All right!” Kay pushed himself up from his seat, supporting his weight on his arms as he loomed forward over the small crowd of people positioned slightly below him. “I am done with the shouting. When I said that this was going to be a civil discussion, I meant it! The next person that starts shouting or makes a threat against anyone else will be ejected and replaced with someone that knows how to act!” He looked around the room with a thunderous expression, “Am I understood?”

“So, I’ve been practicing being all leader-y, right?” Kay commented to Eleniah without looking at her as he walked up next to her. “But what’s the best thing here? Should I be standing above the gatehouse all dramatic-like? Or do I have their leaders brought to me as I loom over them from my throne atop a raised platform in my cavernous throne room?” He turned his shit-eating grin at her, “What would be more intimidating? I was thinking the throne room one, but an armored man lo...

The meeting that Kay wanted to have to discuss his plans for the future of their government and to get everyone else’s ideas to refine his planning didn’t happen that day. It didn’t happen the next day or the day after that either. That was mostly due to Cyrus and Darten. As the newly named Ministers of Finance and Construction, they had the two most demanding jobs in Avalon’s current climate of growth. Kay finally managed to wrangle a time for all of his Ministers and other adviser t...

“Hello, sir.” The handsome human man stopped in front of Kay’s desk at something that resembled a position of attention.
“Sit.” Kay pointed at the chair in front of his desk.
The man sat down.
“I am Kay, Mayor of Avalon.”
“My name is Curcius Mapsight.”
Kay nodded once, “It’s nice to meet you.”
“And you as well, sir. I would also like to repeat to you that I had no knowledge of what Tiras was planning. We met on the road here, and h...

A knock on his office door had Kay looking up from the report he'd received from Cyrus, Avalon's new treasurer. Most of it covered things they'd already discussed, but some of the items about market prices for the parts of various monsters that had shown up or might show up in the region were interesting, and the next section contained various ways other nations and cities had balanced using those monsters as sources of income against the fact that people could just hire adventurers. Some of ...

Kay stared at the posing elven man for a moment before standing up and pushing back from his desk. “Fine. Follow me.”
“What?” The elf who’d just challenged Kay for his Noble Title actually looked shocked at Kay’s reply. It was like he’d been expecting some other response. “Don’t you know who I am?”
“No, why would I know who you are?” Kay glared at him as he walked towards the door, “And what does it matter who you are? I’m not fighting you in my office....

So, I was gone for a bit. A combination of writers block, loss of creative drive, and some personal stuff hit me like a truck and I vanished for a bit. Sorry about that. I thought I'd just be gone a few days like I said last announcement, and instead I ended up being silent for more than a week.
As such, April is going to be free. I can't make things happen differently in the past, but I can make the next month free to get things back to somewhat of an even keel.
Normal posts will...

The figure was misshapen in an almost undetectable way, but after staring at it and shifting pieces here and there, Kay finally agreed with what his instincts had been telling him for most of the day, there was something he was doing wrong, and it was making the figure he’d formed out of blood wrong too.
He sighed, flicked one hand at the humanoid shape made of blood, and let it drop back down into a pool of red while making sure it didn’t splash everywhere. Ripples spread across th...

Hey everyone! Sorry about the radio silence on Monday. It was literally the busiest day we ever had at my job in the history of the business (in terms of sheer number of people), and I was just drained. That, plus some looking back at my schedule and realizing the pain I'm causing myself has made me realize I need to tweak something slightly.
Starting next week, posts will be Tues, Wed, Thurs, instead of Mon, Wed, Fri. That's it, nothing much else is changing for now.
Also, ...

Meeting and getting a read on the recommended person to take over as Avalon’s new treasurer or whatever name they decided to quote Eleniah had taken a lot less time than Kay had thought it would. Mister Cyrus Aventi was an older human man, and more than that, he actually looked old, which was a first for Kay. Almost everyone he had met in Torotia looked young or middle-aged at the oldest. Cyrus looked like an old man. He was bald on top, with a ring of pure white hair around the sides of hi...

“Murunel?” Kay stuck his head inside his office and saw her sitting in his chair, looking out the window.
“Huh?” Her head shot up as she spun to face him. She smiled at him as he walked in. “Hey! Done with your meeting?”
“Yeah, we just finished up.” He grabbed a chair and dragged it around to sit next to her.
Murunel turned back to look out over the village with a big grin on her face. “You guys have done so much while I was gone!”

*Pre-Chapter Note*
This one kicked my ass big time, which is why it's a day late. Apologies.
A glimmering winged shape made its way closer, every beat of shining golden wings pushing the magnificent figure of a golden dragon closer to Avalon.
“It has to be her, right?” Kay asked Eleniah without looking away from the sparkly flying figure. “There isn’t any reason another gold dragon would come out here, right?”
“It...

Kay watched as Tyuah concentrated on the floating ball in front of her. Slowly with multiple jerks and spasms, the amorphous blob of blood turned into a close approximation of a cube. It wobbled in the air for a moment like jello before the shaking suddenly started getting faster and faster, until the lopsided cube ruptured and the blood that had made it up dropped to the ground. Tyuah stared at it with a defeated sigh.
Kay reached out with one hand and gathered the blood back up. He sh...

Kay stared at Ahthia for a moment before sighing deeply. “So I’m right.”
“What exactly are you right about?” She asked, looking at him oddly. “I think I get it, but I’d like confirmation.”

Kay and the remaining members of the expedition, to check out Darkport and scout out the pirate threat to the northwest, limped back into Avalon with little fanfare. In fact, there was no fanfare at all, just people running to and fro as medics and healers started grabbing people and dragging them off somewhere on stretchers. Kay was about to grab one of the people rushing up towards the expedition when Eleniah suddenly blurred into view next to him and slammed into him in a rough hug.

As they dashed from just over the line deeper into the inverted pyramid, the creature’s back bowed and its arms curled in. It kept its head tracking Halloway with the many joints on its neck, twisting its point of view around even as it curled in on itself. Then, with a deep grunt, it threw its arms wide and straightened its back and its neck. Its neck was almost high enough to touch the metal spike hanging above it when it straightened entirely out, but that was the second thing Kay ...

"Chief!"
Halloway shot upright out of his nap when someone called out to him. It'd been a few hours more than a full day after the Mayor had left with three of the strongest members of the expedition, and everyone left behind was starting to get anxious. The Ancients had stayed outside, trapping them in the cramped confines of the few rooms they could hide in, and they'd acted exactly how Kay and Halloway had expected, circling overhead, just waiting for a foolish human to present thems...

The twelve-foot tall giant, half purple down one side of its body and half orange down the other, roared in pain as it stepped on the caltrops made of blood that Kay had scattered around its feet earlier. As it danced around and roared in pain, Kay dashed for the exit.
You could, hypothetically, defeat the giant to clear the room. At least Kay assumed so. He wasn’t going to even attempt to do that, though. With its strange coloration and foppish-looking clothing, at first glance...

Kay looked over the door in front of him, purposefully ignoring the burning remnants of the room behind him. It was on fire and therefore was no longer important. The door out of this room was a new type for him so far and the third type in total he’d found. There were the curtain doors with multiple choices, regular wooden doors that had a dial in their knobs that let you choose a symbol, and this third kind. It looked like the door frame was bricked up, with the same white stone bricks fi...

Yven slowly walked around the board, checking and double-checking the positions of his pieces and that of his invisible opponent. The game of Aik’mu-shal was old, and the only reason he knew how to play at all was his parents’ obsessions with some of the old ways that included it. Their ancestors had made the game, had played the game, some had even lived the game. And so, in their, in Yven’s mind, endless obsession with tradition, he had been taught to play. Personally, he didn’t put...

“Can’t go back,” Kay muttered.
“Is it even worth it to go forward, though?” Lauren asked from where she leaned on the wall a few feet away.
“Potential death is better than certain death.” Halloway shot back, “We can’t take on two tier seven Ancients and their tier five young. It just isn’t happening. With this Dungeon, we at least might have a chance.”
“We aren’t sending everyone in, either.” Kay gestured at the exhausted group. “We’r...

"Scatter!" Chief Halloway screamed. She saw him start to run off to the side.
Glancing up, she noticed one of the creatures starting to turn its body and fold in its wings. Its shape seemed to go from a giant sheet to a long spear as it turned to dive, and then it vanished. Lauren had a brief second to start to worry when an explosion went off to her left. Chunks of rock flew in every direction. Lauren tu...

"Well, that's one reason they must feel safe," Kay commented.
"I'm no sailor, but I wouldn't take a boat anywhere near that," Halloway agreed.
Two days of watching Darkport had led to little new information. They'd determined that there were a few factions among the groups and solidified the idea that they each had territory in the port that was generally respected, but they weren't sure if there were six or seven different groups of pirates. As far as they could tell from distant...

Kay was never that interested in the natural sciences in school. He took the required classes to pass at each level of school he ended up at, but he never really retained the information. Still, he thought that some of the environments around the peninsula were weirdly situated. A huge forest right next to a rocky wasteland of stone pillars, both of which bordered a massive plateau that formed a valley with a nearby mountain, seemed off. And those were only the areas closest to Avalon. There ...

“Why are there so damn many of these things?” Kay wondered at a level of volume that was basically a shout as the swarm of giant praying mantises rushed in again. They weren’t the most powerful of monsters, the only thing he really noticed that was all that monstrous about them was their size, but there were what Kay thought was an insane number. Hundred upon hundreds of them had hurled themselves at him, and the same number had died as he smashed them with the blood of their own kin.
