Keith Courage in Alpha Zones

It's the game they choose to pack in with the TurboGrafx-16! What a way to set things off on the right foot.

Legionnaire

This beat-em-up from Tad (Cabal, Toki) was sorta lost due to emulation issues, at least until relatively recently, when the fine MAME folks cracked its decryption. On the surface, it's another Final Fight-type game, but there's enough odd stuff about it to make it stand out.

Grow Home / Grow Up

Two interesting (and gorgeous) procedurally generated 3D games where you control a little robot in charge of making stuff go. Very different from the typical Ubisoft stuff.

Digan no Maseki (Japanese Video Game Obscurity)

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/digan-no-maseki/

This artwork is one of the games featured on the campaign for this book, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to cover it. Like many late 80s RPGs (Japanese or Western), it's a little difficult and obtuse to play, but it has a cool concept and some absolutely brilliant art.

The latest Danganronpa game, with a lot of discussion about its more controversial elements, though it's hidden with a spoiler space, so you can read about it even if you haven't played it yet.

Shatterhand

One of the pillars of the NES Cult Classics book is Natsume's output, who put a whole lot of...I don't want to say FANTASTIC NES games in the early 90s, but most of them were pretty good, and Shatterhand here is one of the better ones.

Germs: Nerawareta Machi (Japanese Video Game Obscurity)

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/germs-nerawareta-machi/

A PS1 walking sim/first person adventure game, which gives LSD (the game, not the drug) a run for its money on weirdness.

Slight NSFW warning, because I don't know how that packaging was even allowed past Sony's standards, even in Japan.

Jagur 5 (Japanese Video Game Obscurity)

Another write-up intended for the Japanese Video Game Obscurity book. I had to include something by Compile, one of my fave Japanese developers from the 80s, and this MSX RPG doesn't seem to get much attention, even though it has a lot of cool things going for it.

Insector X

Hot-B/Taito's insect-themed shoot-em-up. The Genesis version has a much different art style than the arcade version, which is a weird sort of cute-em-up.

This was previously published in the Guide to Shoot-em-ups Vol. 1 to go along with the other Hot-B shooters (Cloud Master, Over Horizon and Steel Empire). I had a ton of comparison screenshots that I couldn't...
