Tempesta

This week I really worked on my world map game with a map for a patron! This has been a tough one to get right, undergoing a series of revisions and changes to arrive at this final version. This was one of the first things I was told about the map:

“Instead of continents and oceans, the land masses are made up of Spires. Topographically, they'd look like islands. From a side perspective, they are large mushroom-like platforms. Instead of oceans between them, there is a raging storm and torre...

Forest Tiles

I was thinking about so many things that I wanted to say about this tileset while I was making it, but now I'm so tired all I can think of is… yaaaaaay! its finished! I did end up cutting a few ideas here and there due to time but I'm sure I'll come back to them at some point! :)

I also think it's pretty crazy that I just started to do this without any real plan, other than it sounded awesome in my head and a bunch of people wanted forest encounter maps. Making a tileset seemed to be the bes...

Sneak Peek: Tile Colours!

Note! These are works in progress and will change alot by the time Im done! :)

Very often, when I give myself something new to try, I vastly overcomplicate things, and give myself a whole bunch of work to do… These tiles are no exception but I thought I would share a bit of the progress so you guys can see what I’m working on!

The maps and colours in the post image are the concept colours for the five different biomes/environments for the tileable maps that I'm working...

Sneak Peek: Baby Maps?!

So these aren't actually baby maps, or well, I suppose they are… But what I’m really trying to make, is some tileable maps so that people can make their own encounters. The current idea is that you will be able to link them together to create a larger map and then place objects and details pieces on top, like trees, and bushes and mushrooms etc.

The current map tiles for forests and grasslands are beach, cliff, path, stream and 3x plain maps. I’m going to do a few more like a cave ...

Stone Dragon

One of the nice things about drawing a creature that doesn't have an official presence in the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons, is that not only can I can crazy with how it looks, but also attach a homebrew stat block that really makes it stand out! This stone dragon was the top result in a poll I did last month to see what kind of mountain creatures people would like to see. I wanted to do something like for a while and I'd love to draw tokens for every dragon type out there, including...

The Rift

Most of the time when I’m drawing environmental maps or locations they don't necessarily have a story, I don't tend to create locations like these for a specific campaign or adventure. Instead they tend to be made for many different purposes so that people can use them in their own homebrew worlds.

That being said, this map definitely does have a story behind it, you can use it for whatever you want, but what I imagined gave the area a little bit more detail!

“For some unknown ...

Dire Mountain Goat

When I teased that I was drawing a few mountain maps, I asked my patreons what kind creature tokens they would like to see to go with them. A bunch of people loved the idea of a dire mountain goat for ramming players off a mountain, so… here you go! Please use this guy responsibly! :)

Edit: Stats were made for this token by JLunit on my patreon or thorn1993 on reddit!

The Winding Trail

There are a few new things going on with this map, new techniques when I'm drawing and new ways of colouring. You might be able to notice if you zoom in, that there are no longer any hard highlights and only a few hard shadows. By that I mean the highlights that are present have been brushed on much more delicately. I've been playing around with some more brush like free brushes in Photoshop and I quite like how this map has turned out!

This is also a mountain map but I’m going to do some or...

Tokens: Formir

Starting off in the new year, I began with an idea I had years ago for a character made for my own fantasy world called Formir. At the time he wasn't very fleshed out, with little detail apart from a vague description. No one ever encountered him but he inspired this drawing so much I ended up stealing the name. There are some differences, the old version of Formir was a kindly ancient giant that traversed the mountains in solitude. This Formir token has a very different personality and was made...

Patreon Changes

Over the last few days, I’ve made some changes to my patreon page and the Blue Sword discord server, including some new reward tiers, images and updated information. All good things! This post will also give me a chance to address some questions I've received about my patreon and what I will be creating and focusing on in the future, including a new FAQ which will be accessible from the main patreon page after this post goes live.

Patreon Maps: Barovian Graveyard

Following up from the Strahd von Zarovich token I finished up yesterday, I coloured a barovian graveyard today to go with it! I was originally going to make some changes to the patreon page public today but the patreon that requested this map wanted it for a game tomorrow so I prioritized a little! :)

This another very dark map of mine but It fits with the setting, if anyone needs a lighter version I will try and make some changes.

This make comes with print versions which is still a rel...

Tokens: Strahd von Zarovich

While I normally draw creatures and monsters, as my first humanoid token, I can't think of better villain to draw than the monstrous Strahd von Zarovich. Originally the main villain of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons adventure module Ravenloft, he has recently been upgraded to 5th edition and the new adventure the Curse of Strahd. I actually own this one and while I haven't had a chance to run or play it yet, I love its gloomy, dark tone.

This is the first humanoid token I've ever fini...

Tokens: Mountain Roc

Continuing with the mountain theme today with a colossal Roc! The Roc appears in Arabic fairy tales and sailors' folklore, described as a massive bird so large its capable of carrying off an elephant!. My version is coloured in the same way as the art in the 5e Monster Manual for D&D, but I’ve also included a more muted version for those high altitude mountain climates!

With new year's just around the corner, I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow and a happy new year! :)

Mountain Maps: Mountain Peak

The last map before the new year! This is the first map I‘ve done of a mountain environment and I've already drawn a few more that just need to be coloured! Including some map assets and creatures. I put up a poll asking which mountain creatures people would like to see the most, the Stone Dragon, Roc and Dire Mountain Goat have now been drawn, ready to be coloured as well! :)

Oh, there is another version of this map without the clouds as well, in case anyone finds that they get in the...

Printer Options

Just a quick post today! As per request by one of my patreons, I’m testing the additional option to print my maps and I’ve started with a few of my older pieces to test things out. These files should allow you to print my maps onto a normal piece of A4 printer paper for a 1 inch scale without any fiddling around. If you use my maps at the tabletop rather than online then please let me know if there are any problems! I can go back and redo everything if there is interest and it if it works! &...

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! I wanted to make a a quick little map just to celebrate the season and spread the cheer! I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow, I will be cooking christmas dinner for my family again this year so wish me luck!

I also wanted to say that I’ve only been making maps here on patreon for just over 4 months and the amount of support and love has been amazing. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that has supported and followed me so far on...

Sneak Peak: Mountain Maps

Just a quick update on upcoming content, I've just finished inking a bunch of mountain maps and will be colouring them over the next few days! In the meantime I would love to know what people would like  to see for some mountain creatures to go along with them but I can't draw everything at once. Instead I’ve put up a poll and the top 2 will be drawn and included! The rest will also be done but at a ...

Tokens: Freybug

Another massive creature token today, with the monstrous Freybug! A monstrous black dog from medieval English folklore and although not normally depicted as this large I decided to make it truly terrifying! I've really been enjoying making these huge creatures lately, they can be the villains for entire campaigns and really test the strength of your party!

This token comes in two different colours and I put together a stat block for it, in case you want to use it your games!

Im currently...

Tokens: Ancient Aboleth

Just a single creature for today's post, even though it's quite a big one! For anyone that hasn't come across an aboleth before, these massive ocean dwelling creatures are both extremely cruel and highly intelligent. They learn terrible and forbidden secrets thanks to their unique racial memory, being born fully aware of all the memories of their ancestors, making even the youngest aboleth a frighteningly deadly predator. Aboleths do not die of old age and so live on indefinitely, barring violen...

Patreon Maps: Ukiyo, The Floating World

Todays map is a patreon supporters world map for a homebrew setting called Ukiyo, The Floating World. I often find myself getting very invested in lore and worldbuilding whenever I have the time, so when I was asked to draw a world map I was quite excited!

Ukiyo is a series of land masses above roiling chaotic clouds so I thought overall the world from above would look a little bit like a gas planet. Although I must admit I am a little rusty drawing world maps, if I had more time I would...

Tilesets: Insect Caves

This map pack is quite small but you have a few options to increase the size and scope of the caves, so make sure you check out the downloads! I do want to do a fully fleshed out cave tileset at some point so this is a just a quick look at the kind of thing I want to do. I am especially interested in drawing and creating caves like this that can be placed over the top of any existing environment, so you can put them in anywhere.

I also took the opportunity to design some insect creature...

Sneak Peak: Insect Caves

A quick post today with some tokens! I’ve been drawing a small and large insect cave and wanted some creatures to go with it! I made a cross between spiders and dragonflies for a mean looking hybrid to go with the maps.

These guys don't currently have a name.. so if anyone has any ideas leave a comment! :D

Forts & Castles, Complete

This is the largest map project I've done so far, with a massive amount of individual tileset pieces and a whole host of colour variations! (It seems like that happens every month at the moment) This is all hand drawn, onto about 26 bits of paper, scanned into photoshop and coloured digitally.

Its taken me far longer than I expected but I really like the results. I set out to make a tileset that was versatile and adaptable for running a game and creating scenes and encounters. Of course even n...

Forts & Castles, Part 3

A quick post today just on patreon with the “almost” finished castle assets, I have the ruined sections of the castle tileset nearly complete so hopefully I can get that out tomorrow and finalize everything into one big post. I think some of the assets need some shadows and overall fixes as well but I wanted to make a post today with whats done. :)

Patreon Maps: Crown Tree

Today I finished up another Patreon supporter map! I was asked to draw a map in which the players might encounter a deity or number of deities, in a kind of dream like scenario that would be bathed in ethereal light. The most prominent feature should be the large tree, with a  gradient from the deepest blue to the most fiery orange is dotted with small fruits. Silver on the dark side and red on the other.

Forts & Castles, Part 2

I love this tileset. I mean, I made it.. so I'm bound to be biased but i've always loved castles, the idea of running around them in an RPG is such an awesome concept, plus with this set you can literally make your own.

There are still a few things to do, but I have a cold and i'm going to take a break tomorrow, but I thought everyone would like to play around with these now. I might add shadows around the edges, plus I need to fix a few things so that everything lines up in Roll20. ...

I've only finished up the wooden tiers for now, the stone tiers and 4 pages of furniture and extras should be done over the next few days!

Below I've put together a little fort with some of the pieces and I also used the...

Sneak Peak: Forts & Castles Tileset

This is by far, the largest project and series of maps I have ever undertaken. Spread across 12 pages in total (some of which you can't even see here) is a tileset designed for people to create their own forts and castles!

This project was asked for by a patreon but I had already planned to create something like this at some point. Requesting a castle map simply boosted it to the top of the list :) One of my ambitions when playing in an RPG game, is to build a castle for one of my characters f...

Quick Tokens: Jungle

One of the reasons I started drawing maps and sharing them with people was because I thought there was a real lack of great enviroment locations out there. I wanted to draw desert, ocean, jungle, mountains etc and put them out there for people to use.

That's still the goal! However I do tend to spend a lot more time on maps lately, which is great because they are higher quality but it means some of the environments haven't even been touched yet.

This map was made with some tokens I made ...
