Retronauts Vol. IV Episode 54: Super Mario 64

As a special Thanksgiving treat, here's this week's advance episode a whole day early. Listen in as we chat with Polygon's Danielle Riendeau and Laser Time's Henry Gilbert about the great Super Mario 64!

Retronauts Micro 27 Early (Audio) Version

This week's early access episode concerns Q*Bert. It may seem a little brief, but there's a reason for that! I intend to start shifting away from pure audio for my Micro episodes and move instead into video, which I think it a better fit for this style of retrospective. There'll still be audio editions, of course, but the main event will be on our YouTube channel. It'll be a few days before this episode's video edition is up and running, but I'll definitely give you a heads-up as soon as it's co...

Your early access episode for the week has arrived

This week's episode takes a look back at a company that made a huge impression in the '80s arcade with just a few key releases: Williams. To celebrate the occasion, we brought in our coworker Jaz Rignall, who counts Williams classics Defender and Robotron among his favorite games—they helped turn him into a UK arcade legend in the '80s! As usual for episodes I lead, it's pretty sedate... but hopefully you'll find the content interesting enough that you won't be lulled to sleep by the tone of t...

Where's This Week's Advance Episode?

Hey folks, if you're wondering why Monday came and went without this week's advance episode being posted on Patreon, allow me to explain. This new Retronauts is fully edited and ready to go, but right now we're waiting for the guest from that episode to sign off on it—this person (who works at a video game publisher) was nice enough to come in and record with us, so we don't want to be responsible for any HR issues. The good news is I didn't spot any possible problems during the editing proces...

Retronauts Micro 25: Prince of Persia

Hi! The sound quality in this is terrible! Something awful has happened to my mixing board. Alas, I promised to have this episode up tonight, and I like to keep my word. So I didn't have time to figure out what was wrong and fix things up. That means you get the special "pre-quality" version of this show, which I'll be recording again before it goes out to the public. Hope you enjoy the show regardless!

NES Episode wallpaper

Hi everyone, sometimes happens, here's a wallpaper version of the latest episode's cover art. This is not me simply trying to handwave the fact that the next episode is running slightly late, ha ha! Sigh.

Yeah, sorry. The new episode will be up tonight. The script ended up being about twice as long as I intended for it to be, plus I got kind of bogged down writing the huge articles that went along with the NES episode. It's been a stressful week. But you should read those articles if you h...

Slightly early access: Retronauts episode 51

It took me a while to find the time to get this one finished up and create the cover artwork for it, but here we go! It's finally here: Episode 51, recorded live at Portland Retro Gaming Expo. It's a series of four different one-on-one conversations about the NES launch. The different chats cover a bit of the same ground, perhaps unavoidably, but hopefully you'll forgive the small amount of repetition for the pleasure of hearing expert opinions from game historians Frank Cifaldi, Gary Butterfiel...

This week's early access episode!

...will be a day or two late. I recorded it live this weekend and Portland Retro Gaming Expo, you see, and now I have to travel back to the east coast — so I won't be able to edit it until I'm back at home. But it has lots of good conversations with knowledgeable people. You'll like it. Expect to hear it tomorrow, Wednesday at the latest. Also thanks to everyone who came out to meet us at Ground Kontrol last night! It was cool hanging out with you all. Y'all. You'uns.

REMINDER: Hang with us this weekend in Portland!

Hi everyone, we've mentioned it a few times before, but this is the one that counts. Bob and I will be attending Portland Retro Gaming Expo this weekend as one of our three "live events" for the year. We won't be presenting a panel; instead, we're hosting a public meet-up at Ground Kontrol, a local arcade. The place is ours from 5-7 Sunday night (and yours, too, if you sign up: 2015-10-16 18:17:30 +0000 UTC View Post

Hi friends, as you might have read on this very Patreon page, regular livestreams have been part of our content plan since we hit those particular funding tiers. Retronauts Micro #22: TGS special

Hi everyone, sorry for how long this has been in the making, but I wanted it to be a special episode, and the final segment couldn't be recorded until yesterday. Hopefully you'll find it worth the wait! Rather than say anything further, I'll simply let you hear the show for yourself.

Backer rewards, and some (very slightly) bad news

Hi everyone, I'm afraid I'm a giant butthead and your early access episode for the week will be late again. It's hard to put these together when I'm traveling literally every other week, but I will piece a show together ASAP. So that's the bad news.

In the meantime, you'll be happy to know that backer rewards have been submitted to Fangamer for manufacture and distribution! They have the current list of supporters as of this month, so even if the shirts take a little longer to produce than exp...

Bonus and reminder

Hi everyone, just in case you missed the weekend's podcast deluge, don't forget the Super Mario Bros. 30th anniversary episode (Retronauts Vol. IV #48) went up on Saturday. Give it a listen if you haven't already!

And here is the final cover art for that episode, converted into a desktop-sized wallpaper image for you to download and potentially use, if you should deem it worthy. I call this illustration, "'Who... are... you?' said the Koopa Paratroopa?"

I suppose I should have made...

Early access: Retronauts Episode 48

I wasn't lying when I said I'd post this episode extra early to make up for the last one! Fresh from last week's recording sessions, we celebrate 30 years of Super Mario Bros. with Jose Otero from IGN and the long-absent Wired's Chris Kohler. In addition to talking about what makes SMB so great and timeless, we also dig into Super Mario Maker for a while. Music by The Minibosses and The Advantage.

Retronauts Micro Episode 21: "Early" access

Not particularly early, I realize. Alas.

Anyway, here it is: The most recent episode. It's a look at a personal favorite, Namco's Rolling Thunder. Given the praise Bob's music episodes have received, I've made a conscious effort to spend more time here on the series' great music... something I've been a bit gunshy about to avoid stepping on Ray Barnholt's toes too much (remember 1UP's The Sound Test?). But the people demand what they demand! Hope you enjoy it.

And I'll make up for ...

A quick note on this week's early episode

Or rather, "early" episode. Huge apologies that the next Retronauts Micro hasn't gone up yet. We spent the weekend doing a marathon recording session in San Francisco, and I had hoped to post the Micro as soon as I got home. Unfortunately one of my recording cables was damaged in transit and had to be replaced. The replacement arrives tomorrow, and I'll have the episode posted as quickly as possible once it's in. Again, I'm sorry about the tardiness! We try not to make it a habit, but our weeken...

Early Access: Episode 47, Metal Gear

Hi, everyone. Believe it or not, this is the 100th episode of Retronauts since we went solo two years ago. And this milestone comes on the back of another milestone: The end of Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear games. The series may go on, but as a franchise defined by its ties to a true believer in auteur theory, MGSV will be the end of the series as we know it. So, superfans Shane Bettenhausen and Jose Otero join us to close the curtain on Kojima's mad genius.
