Insects, or moth people, are one of the first things I came up with-- the only thing older than them is Lizards themselves. Originally, they were a kind of foil to the lizards. Lizards are artificial custodians, they're equipped to build and repair things. With that in mind, insects were going to be artificial artisans. Lizards help produce goods, while insects help produce art and cultural services like music, poetry, writing, and diplomacy.

the desert is made of tiny ceramic shards which, depending on the size, cut and splinter and slice into your cells. It's basically asbestos.
the ceramic desert is filled with the guts of the ancient structures it was made from so it's a rich place for mining and artificing. plus that ceramic dust is a valuable additive for concrete and steel

before entering a family's compound, there's a ceremonial washing-off ceremony, taking place in the entryway.
It has a very practical purpose aside from the ceremonial one: stopping you from tracking dirt everywhere.
entryways range from a bowl of water in the mudroom to a massive, monolithic reflecting pool, depending on your family's resources and the desired effect. Do you want visitors to feel welcomed or intimidated?
Those buildings look *way* bigger than they're supposed to.
