The Daily Grind - Chapter 159

Almost there.

Also, hey, if you need other stories to read while you're waiting for me to drive this story off the cliff?  Go check out The Roads Unseen.  It's on RoyalRoad, it's written by someone I know, and it's pretty fun fantasy that has a lot of the same style of humor that I tend to like.  Or, if you want some big smart sci-fi adventure, check out Cosmosis : Above the Sky.  It's *not* written by someone I know, but I wish it was, because it's really cool.

The Daily Grind - Chapter 158

“I dreamt like a war machine // and woke like a child.” -Lo Kwa Mei-en, Arial-

_____

The girl who’d been with Alanna was named Katie.  Ragged blonde hair, a razor thin nose, and a layer of dirt that had given way to reveal a series of scrapes and scratches after she’d taken a half hour in the shower.  She was, after getting over being timid, honestly kind of a rude person.  Older than James had initially assessed, too.

She was one of three peo...

I lied about taking this week off.  I felt like I might have needed it, but then I started writing, and felt pretty good.  So, if my mental health holds, we'll just stay on our normal schedule.  Oh, also this one's early, so enjoy that extra bonus.

The contrast between the roadways of the Midwest and the alien landscape of Route Predation were just as stark the second time as on James’ first excursion here.

We were all in it together, though. Every stranger you ever met, they were fighting the very same fight you were. Of course, you didn't talk about it with them, but all of us saw that terror, the terror any mortal person has. That terror wasn't natural. No other creature in the universe woke up every morning knowing it was gua...

You know, the road dungeon was, like, the first one I brainstormed after the Office?  It's actually been hinted at existing since before they even met El, and it's one I thought would be one of my favorites.  And now that we're *here*, well past when I expected to have gotten around to it, I find that I don't really know how to write it.  It's like I'm writing a different story entirely, and it feels... weird, I guess.  Awkward.

Anyway, here's a chapter.

I haven't slept more than six hours in the last three days, and I dislike this a lot.  I thought getting vaccinated was supposed to give side effects that made you feel like you had the flu.  I want to feel like I had the flu!  I didn't sign up for insomnia, *again*.

Anyway enjoy the chapter.

I'm really not happy with this chapter, and I can't put my finger on *why*.  It does the job I need it to of advancing time and showing a few small things that are actually important.  But I fear it drags on a little.  Maybe I'm just overthinking it, I dunno.  I'll feel better next week about next chapter.

The perk of having worked really hard the last couple of weeks is that depression no longer slows down release schedules.  Which, in a neat twist, takes a lot of pressure off me, and makes it easier to break out of a depressive spiral and go back to writing.

I should have tried this years ago!

Anyway, here's a chapter.  I'm not sure if it's exactly what I was going for, so I'd really appreciate seeing people's reactions to this one in particular.
