Hi folks!
Coming to you today with something special. I sat down with DM Matthew Perkins to talk about familiars in 5th Edition D&D. Matt was kind enough to edit it for us.
Be sure to go check out Matt's channel on YouTube. He's awesome and deserves more followers. Like, comment, subscribe, and tell your friends. You know the drill.
Enjoy!

Some confusion is understandable when managing dark environments in 5th Edition D&D. There's a few different rules you need to put together, and your roll can be affected differently depending on whether you're trying to see or attacking. Plus, it may not be the same for each player!
In order to simplify that process, here's a couple tables that can assist you in play. It's not a bad idea to print them out and tape them to your DM screen, if for no other purpose than to remind you t...

Resting
Heroic though they might be, adventurers can't spend every moment in the thick of exploration, social interaction, and combat. They need rest — time to sleep and eat, tend their wounds, refresh their minds and spirits for spellcasting, and brace themselves for further adventure.
While resting, a character can engage in limited activity. If they do more, their rest is interrupted, and they gain no benefit from the rest unless they start again. Light activity

Since Phantom Rogue's Wails from the Grave feature uses proficiency scaling, and Rogues get an extra ASI at level 10, I ran a chart just for them.

5th Edition D&D has a skill problem. It lies in a feature called expertise.
Expertise allows you to add your proficiency bonus twice when using a skill:
The expertise mechanic is fine. The problem is that only Rogues and Bards get expertise. On the surface, this makes sense because these are the "skill monkey" classes. In application, this allows them to be the "jack of all trades" while still being master of several.
As a result, some weird things happen. For example:

In anticipation of the upcoming D&D/Magic: the Gathering book, Mythic Odysseys of Theros, I prepared a supplement that I'll be releasing around the time the book comes out. Since the hardback doesn't release until June 2, 2020, I'm releasing the materials two months early for playtesting. I want to get you all the best product possible, so I'm eager to hear your feedback. Please leave your comments below!

Here's the PDF for the Time Domain Cleric, a subclass I made because I really wanted to make a d12 mechanic based around clocks. Time was a great fit for the Cleric subclass because I've really wanted to make a Cleric, but it's hard finding a niche with FOURTEEN published subclasses!

There's no telling when inspiration will strike. I was recently watching the Indiana Jones trilogy (don't tell me otherwise) for the millionth time, when I was struck with an idea for a new subclass.
You know that scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark where the nazis open the Ark of the Covenant and summarily melt their own faces and explode? Yeah, that was awesome. Now there's an entire Druid subclass built around it!

The best way to make a spellcaster feel powerful is to throw hordes of enemies that the caster can dispatch with a single blast. The problem is that actually running this math at the table can be an absolute chore. The time gap between rolling a ton of damage dice and actually narrating what happens leaves the experience a little flat.
In order to fix this, we need a faster way to adjudicate area effect damage against hordes of monsters. Taking a cue from Mob Attacks in the Dungeon ...

This is a calculator I made for an upcoming article. It helps DMs adjudicate how many creatures die when you use an area of effect spell against a mob or horde. I've preloaded it with a certain number of low-CR creatures that you might typically see in a swarm/army. However, you can check any other creature by plugging in their HP and DEX/CON saves.
Here's how it works:
Determine how many monsters are within the range of the spell. For guidance on making this determination, check:...
