Brielle Match 2 Commentary

Biggest take away, stuff the knee!! As a team we have to quit holding on to the cross-face and underhook for too long.

Chels Match 1 Commentary

Fundamentals and a competitive mindset go a long ways. Remember you never want to give your opponents anything. Get your elbows back and keep them home before you move on to your next step.

Kegan Agnew Commentary

A quick commentary on what to look out for when your fighting Kegan Agnew.

Keys to victory:

Pressure Kegan back. You can do this by countering the jab left hook or feinting and leading with the left. Also feinting the level change will be huge since he’s not on par with his wrestling.

Respect his lead jab and hook since he’s most likely a righty fighting southpaw. Circling to the left to catch your breath or just to get him to run into your lead straight is a goo...

RIDING LEGS IN BJJ

There are major differences in riding legs in folk style wrestling and in bjj. The biggest overall difference is the urgency in wrestling. Wrestlers approach wrestling with a mentality of an athlete which means conditioning and training with urgency is a top priority. On a large scale Jiu Jitsu is still taught and trained as a martial art meaning there is no urgency in executing techniques. Efficiency and effectiveness are top priority. In this breakdown you'll see that play out on the highes...

The Short Cut and the 2on1

Getting up from a take down the wall is all about finding the right exit and avoiding defensive cycles. The short cut is an effective way of breaking a cycle and also entering into your 2on1 which leads to other strong ways of exiting the cycle.

Cage Stand Ups

There's some slight differences between a traditional stand up and a Cage stand up. Mainly hips and shoulders need to be squared to the cage and opponent. A heavy staggered stance will lead to trip opportunities for your opponent. Giving up your back and hand fighting will usually lead to a clean break, a 2on1, or back to a single.

Jose vs Ashton

Having strong funnels and knowing what your options are from certain positions is key in this fight. Areas the team can improve in are dealing with the body lock quicker. either you pummel for underhooks and battle for better shoulder positioning or give up your back and fight the hands. Also dealing with a single quicker would help the team spend less time on the wall. Either cross-face the head to the inside or sit the corner and step over your opponents leg. All in all a stellar performanc...

Baby Step to Cut Distance

Quick clip from the last Petrosyan Breakdown on how a narrow stance hides a baby step into the pocket. This is great if you're trying to cut distance into boxing range.

Petrosyan vs Sorgraw

Another Slo-mo look in the Petrosyan Film Study Series. Petrosyan's main goal early in the fight was not to get kicked!! This was executed by keeping a narrow stance at distance and being ready to check as he takes small steps to close the distance. Giorgio's next goal was to get in boxing range and unload some big power shots. He did this by feinting a small level change realizing that Sorgraw was giving up ground each time he did. This game plan was executed perfectly in this fight and it's...

Round 4: GGG vs Canelo

A slo-mo look at some of the fast paced action between Canelo and GGG reveals that G is a much better defender than most are led to believe. Also, it becomes more apparent that the Jab was giving Canelo a hard time in their second fight.

Chris Gutierrez vs Pedro Munhoz

Another breakdown based on the Factory X team. Chris was unable to maintain range and lacked the tools needed to alleviate Pedro's forward pressure. Also the tendency for fighters out of Factory X is to concede positions in the grappling exchanges. This costs Chris valuable time and helps Pedro look like the aggressor the whole fight leading to a close loss.

Giorgio Petrosyan vs Smokin Jo Nattawut

Smokin Jo finds an opening on Giorgio by countering his rear leg kick and looking for his own pull counters. What makes Giorgio so good is his ability to change things up and attack from different angles. On top of that its his ability to counter your counter. Another fight in Slo mo!

Giorgio Petrosyan vs Fabio Pinca

Funneling, Guard Manipulation, and Controlling the Distance are all key factors in Giorgio's elite striking. Giorgio likes to throw his left hand as often as possible so he funnels into his left mainly through pull counters. This fight is also a good case study in manipulating the high guard to set up different shots. If it weren't for GP's ability to manage range he'd have a lot less success with any three of these. Although Petrosyan doesn't have a diverse set of attacks he does a good job ...

Chris Gutierrez vs Geraldo de Freitas

Pressure makes all the difference in this one. The blueprint on how to defeat an at range fighter has always been pressure and it becomes very apparent when Geraldo starts pushing Chris back that those are his best moments. The essential tools to keep someone off of you as they pressure you back like framing, jabs/teeps, and sitting down on to power shots are missing from Chris' game. This makes it difficult for him to maintain ring generalship. Lastly pressuring in good position is vital so ...

Giorgio vs Buakaw

Nerds only! This breakdown is in slow-mo. Quick synopsis; Buakaw wins the early rounds with heavy kicks and good defense. In contrast to my earlier breakdown of Giorgio vs Souwer, Buakaw does an excellent job staying balanced and in position to defend not allowing Giorgio to get off counters. In the later rounds Petrosyan finds his timing and has success landing his left lead. He also has more success checking and defending Buakaw's heavy kicks. Both fighters like to cross check, teep the lea...

Ryan MacDonald vs Chris Gutierrez

Regional standout Ryan MacDonald faces Factory X product Chris Gutierrez in a very telling 3 round fight. Takeaways are don't let Factory X fighters fight in their kicking range, be ready to check kicks if your wanting to apply pressure, and be ready to counter rear side strikes after playing with the lead hand.

Giorgio Petrosyan Vs Andy Souwer

First Kickboxing Breakdown! I'll be focusing on Giorgio's career and in gaining an understanding as to why he's considered by so many to be the GOAT of kickboxing. In this breakdown it's obvious that his defense is elite and his ability to counter even after leading is second to none. Some interesting noticeable tells in his style are his feet! Narrow feet mean he's teeping and playing defense wide stance means he's loading up on big punches and ready to box!

Hunter Osentowski vs Cuay Shaw

In this back and forth Ammy match up we see some recurring themes. Those themes; never miss an opportunity to give your opponent consequences and breaking your base pulls you out of position to capitalize on your opponents mistakes. This being Hunter's 3rd Ammy fight you can see some great development with the wall work. In the end energy levels and learning how to deal with the right hook cost us the fight but what an amazing learning experience. Def one we'll be getting better from.  View Post

Arman Tsarukyan vs Mateusz Gamrot

Another great fight between two of the divisions best wrestlers. There are a couple grappling sequences in this fight that determine the outcome. When you watch this breakdown and compare it to the previous one between Gamrot and Beniel you'll see how small differences in technique and its application through attitude or urgency make a world of difference.

Beniel Dariush vs. Mateusz Gamrot

This fight reaffirms all the previous breakdowns on this page. You'll see great examples of funneling, force feeding the single, and giving up your back and pressuring into the wall to fight hands. These are the evolving fundamentals of cage wrestling, if you can master these you can fight on the biggest stages. As always leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Pt 2 Creating Funnels

The second half of an amazing matchup. Basically force feed the single and counter attack.

The Importance of Creating Funnels

In this back and forth high profile match up between two of the UFC's best Grapplers at 155 lbs, Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan, we see a strong recurring theme. The theme, force feed the single on my strong side and counter wrestle. Islam's strong takedown defense is based around defending his rear leg (left leg) although he's good at defending both legs he favors defending his left leg. In a sport where a million different things can decide a fight the athletes at the top focus on funn...
