5: Rogue

Chloe turned sharply as a figure stepped out from between the trees. Hooded, cloaked, dangerous.

He held two curved daggers, one in each hand, and dropped something limp and furry at his feet. It hit the ground with a dull thud. Brown, floppy eared, and punctured clean through the side, it looked like some kind of oversized rat. Maybe a mutant? Hard to tell, and not the important part.

Her focus snapped back to the man. He didn’t look like a monster. No twisted limbs. No g...

4: Out of the Dungeon

With her left hand now firmly reattached and no longer flopping off at awkward moments, Chloe had only one thing left to do: figure out how to reach the next floor of the dungeon.

3: Disarmed

Chloe stood at the mouth of a narrow passage, where the tunnel sloped upward into darkness. It had to be the way up.

Chloe stared at the empty air where the glowing messages had vanished. That was just one brain, and she’d gotten all that? A full level-up, stat boosts across the board, and five whole points in magic. Five! That had to be a lot… probably. Either way, it sounded like a good thing.

She clutched her face with both hands and let out a giddy laugh. She knew she was special. Of course she was.

Dropping into a crouch over the corpse, she tapped its cracked skull with a finger. Y...

1: Daily Routine

Chloe burst from the ground in a spray of dirt. Soil scattered across the cavern floor, clinging to her skin and lodging beneath her nails. She remained there a moment, half-buried, before slowly pushing herself upright.

This was a routine Chloe knew far too well. Although, she didn’t remember exactly how she’d died last time.

It took a few seconds for her mind to clear up, but she eventually remembered the details of her last death. It had been the work of a man in a br...
