The Daily Doug Live - Episode 5

In this special episode of The Daily Doug Live, we are joined by my mother for a fun conversation. Megan and I were stopped at mom's house for a day as we drove home from attending my grandmother's funeral. And, I'm very pleased that mom agreed to join us and share some #DougStories. Enjoy!

I'm setting the permissions for this video as being available to all patrons. Livestreams like this happen for Tier 4 folks twice a month! Please don't share this link on social media or elsewhere......

The Daily Doug Live: Friday at 4:20.

Hi all. It’s been an emotional and long week, but we’re headed back home. We’ll have a ‘travel edition’ livestream at our normal time tomorrow at 4:20pm eastern. We’ll be broadcasting from my mother’s home and are eager to chat with you all. See you then!

UPDATE: My mom will join in with some ‘Doug stories.’ We’re still traveling, so I won’t be including music in this livestream. So, I’m opening the livestream up to all tiers this time. Hope you can attend!

Mendelssohn's Paulus: Overture - Behind the Score (Episode 4)

In this episode of Behind the Score, I'm taking you through the Overture to Paulus by Felix Mendelssohn. This oratorio tells the story of Saul/Paul the apostle, through his early railing against followers of Jesus, his conversion, and his evangelism in the years after. The Overture makes use of the German Lutheran hymn Wachet Auf.

We start by taking a look at the hymn's usage by Bach in his BWV 140 Cantata.  Then, we follow along with the score to Mendelssohn's Overture. Stay...

We've just released The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as Episode 4, but it's not too soon to start thinking about episode 5.

For this episode, we'll again be following the rules we used last time. The winner got the episode (Genesis). The 2nd and 3rd place finishers from last time get included in this poll (Haken & Queensryche). And, I pick my best other three to round out the range of options.

For this round 1, simply vote for the band you'd most like included at this time...

Our fourth installment of the Extended Play Lounge is the entire double album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, from Genesis. This was my first full time through this album, and it truly was a journey of personal discovery. This was recorded in one full take. There are no jump cuts...just me, my headphones, my computer, and the music of Genesis. Enjoy!

Behind the Score Ep. 3 - Adagio for Strings & Agnus Dei (Samuel Barber)

For our third Behind the Score episode, I'm looking at one of the most famous pieces of American classical music written in the twentieth century...Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. I take you through a bit of history around this work, then we dive into performances (with music notation) of Adagio for Strings (for string orchestra) and Agnus Dei (for unaccompanied choir). (The other version is included as the 2nd movement in the original string quartet setting.) I hope you enjoy!

Extended Play Lounge Episode 4 - Poll (Round 1)

This series has become a favorite here on the DD Patreon. Thanks for your participation! For our next episode, our poll will be following the rules we established in the episode 3 poll. And, I pick my best other three options from my current list to round out the new 5 options for this poll.

In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson (Extended Play Lounge Ep. 3)

Vimeo Link: https://vimeo.com/596313787/795647f450

Our third installment of the Extended Play Lounge is the entire debut album from King Crimson. Their landmark 1969 album helped lead the prog revolution. I was quite astounded by this album...and, it was not what I was expecting. (Although, I really don't know what I was expecting.) The depth of lyric surprised me. The extended Avant Garde and (seemingly) fre...

Behind the Score Ep. 2 - Erlkönig (Franz Schubert)

For our second episode of the Behind the Score series, we're diving into Erlkönig by Franz Schubert. Many on the discord were interested in hearing a breakdown of this piece. It has a great mystical story as its backdrop. And, Schubert's writing is full of exciting harmonic and melodic twists, turns, ups, and downs.

I take you through an introduction, initial listen, harmonic analysis, and a final viewing of an animated video depicting the events in the story.

Extended Play Lounge Episode 2 Poll Result

Hello everyone,

Thanks for voting in the poll for the Extended Play Lounge. Rush gathered the most votes. Genesis came in 2nd. I was pleased to see that there is relative support for all of the choices in this poll. It tells me I'm on the right track with this community. We'll definitely get to these other choices soon.

Based on the feedback in the comments, I'll be listening to Cygnus X-1 Book 1 off of A Farewell to Kings followed by all of Hemispheres, which includes Cygnus X-1...

We're going to listen to the original version of the work, for piano. Then, we'll dive into the harmonic and motivic structures embedded in the musical score. Finally, ...

Hi all,

I'm sorry for the issues surrounding our first major video! YouTube has struck again. Their bots issued 13 separate copyright claims (and blocked distribution) as the video uploaded. So, I have invested in a new Vimeo account and am uploading the full Metropolis video there as we speak. As soon as it finished uploading and processing, I'll make a n...
