Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Barefist Training vs Training with Bag Gloves

My vlogs are just me talking about my experiences with techniques over the years.

About 6 years ago I broke my hand in a fight. As I was recovering from that, training around it, I started in earnest with "barefist" training, which I learned from Sifu McInnes (Robert "Sifu" McInnes is in the Muay Thai Library here). The short version of why that was a method I chose while my broken hand (the fight I broke it ...

Yodpitak Chor Nateetong - Femeu Knees & the Art of Spacing (80 min)

Kru Tak is one of these teachers who has a definite style, which is Femeu (Thai for "artful"), slick, playful but punishing, and supremely hard to stand in front of. And yet, the depth of his knowledge and keenness of insight into what your style is, allows him to improve any level, any style, any technique. He's very smart, very knowledgeable, and very personable, which makes working with him fun. If you find yourself in Pattaya, I 100% recommend taking the opportunity to train with...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - The Non-Switch Lead Kick

My technique vlogs aren't demo videos. They are just plain old discussions of my personal experiences in training techniques that I work on as a fighter. They are just vlogging about the things I've discovered around techniques.

This technique is one that I've kind of be working on, on and off, for many years. It more or less developed over time on its own, but I have focused specifically on it a few times per year for the past 6 years or so, ever since moving to Pattaya....

Tepniramit Sitsamnao | Defend and Punish: Old School Pattaya Muay (75 min)

Tepniramit is a very cool entry to the Library, and sessions like this are a big part of what our documentary project is about. We have entries with absolute Legends, the best of the best fighters of all time (the legends tag is here), but we also find it really important to include the "local legacy" and pedagogy of Krus who have spent their entire lives in Muay Thai, dev...

Muay Thai 4 MMA | The Teep as a System: Lessons from the Library

Our note: This column focuses on the application of the muay that is documented in the Muay Thai Library from legends, elite krus & fighters from all over Thailand, preserving the legacy of Thailand's heritage, but in the context of MMA. We feel it's important to build bridges from the legendary techniques of the best who ever fought to the contemporary fighting sports of our time....

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Getting on Your Toes

This one is something I've been working on in cycles. I get instructed or corrected on it, I work on it, I get better at it, then it falls away as something I've already taken care of and I end up flat-footed again - maybe only in small moments - because I'm no longer thinking about it. So the title of this Technique Vlog is about Getting on Your Toes, but that's not the technique really; secretly, the technique is about being sensitive enough to your body and balance to know when you're ...

A MTBs Podcast Shard - To Wrestle With the Angel (26 min)

This is an unusual addendum to our usual podcasting, as it's only one topic. Kevin made a film short, which he titled To Wrestle With the Angel, which is about my sparring with the Golden Age Legend Yodkhunpon. It's an enormous undertaking, sparring an hour every morning, 6 days per week for what is going on 6 months or more now. We talk about the film short, but also about what the film is attempting to capture, what it means for me, as a fighter, to "wrestle with the angel". We added the au...

Yodwicha Por Boonsit 3 - Spearing the Middle, Fighting With Rhythm (66 min)

I was very excited to get more of Yodwicha for the Muay Thai Library, not only because he's an excellent teacher and I love his Muay Khao style, but also because he's developed a great deal over the time since we last filmed with him a few years ago. He is, perhaps, of the last generation of true Muay Khao of contemporary stadium Muay Thai (although I hope maybe we're just experiencing an air-bubble and it will come back in full force). But since departing from the Bangkok stadium scene (havi...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - How to Use Bagwork in Thailand

My change in understanding the purpose, or aim, of bagwork in so far as how it's used in Thailand is a very recent one. I've been wailing on the bag for years and years, not without benefit, not without purpose, but I've recently come to understand that many Thai pedagogies don't use bagwork for the purposes that I've been using it for. Instead, it's meant as a kind of more nuanced tool for practicing timing, rhythm, certainty and composure... in a word: jang-wa, which I've ...

Muay Thai Bones Podcast #20 - 90 Min Edition: 15 Rules for Muay Thai, Building My Own Training

We're trying something a bit new with this episode, a shorter version, more frequent shot on the couch rather than driving across Thailand on the way home from a fight.  We still speak in depth, covering all kinds of topics as they connect to Muay Thai; but we're looking to making the Muay Thai Bones Podcast more frequent and, perhaps in the shorter versions, more accessible. We'll still have our epic, long, car-ride version when we drive to fights; we just have this in-between as well. ...

Khunpinit Giattawan Freestyle: Southern Power Femeu Style (71 min)

Khunpinit trained at and fought out of the Kaewsamrit Gym, alongside Anuwat; Khunpinit fought Saenchai (4x) during the time that Saenchai was a formidable stadium fighter, and he gave up weight against Attachai (2x), which is just crazy to me. He was 112 lb and 122 lb Lumpinee Stadium Champion and, to me, he fits neatly in the school of Karuhat, Attachai, and Namsaknoi in terms of style. But he seems to embody a kind of Southern version of Muay Femeu, one typified by Namsaknoi, a style which ...

This vlog is really about things I've discovered, or am currently discovering, within that short period of time and onward. That's what these Patreon technique vlogs are all about. Pairojnoi Sor. Siamchai - Balance, Footwork & Intensity (61 min)

Pairojnoi has a very unassuming energy. He's lightly awkward but notably very sweet even in short exchanges. If given a hundred guesses, I'd likely not have connected him to his Golden Age self, where he was half of the 'Fight of the Century" against "Rambo," which is an all-you-can-eat buffet of two punchers, loading each other's plates until they spill over. It's incredible. He's not a brawler though - even though he's totally capable of relentless forward pressure - and demonstrates a grea...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog #21 - Your Ambient Footwork (15 min)

This is a concept that I've only recently been working on, even though I've worked on elements that are kind of "adjacent" to it. I call this "Ambient Footwork" because it's how you move between everything else. It isn't the same as "Jang-wa", which I've also talked about in a Technique Vlog, but it is a required element to make your "Jang-wa" work. Ambient Footwork is one of the harder things to think about and train. The things you are doing between strikes. I hope you enjoy my thought...

He's 64 years old and an incredible energy that mixes his sweetness, thoughtfulness, joy, and comes through his gleeful manner of speaking - but his body is made out of blades and anvils. Sylvie's Technique Vlog #20 - Jang-wa, Rhythm and Timing

This technique vlog is a bit different in that it's more a concept than a direct technique, but it's an elementary concept that affects every technique you will ever use. Jang-wa is rhythm and timing. There's the technique of throwing a cross, but then there's jang-wa, which is what allows you to land it. There's the technique for a powerful elbow, but you need jang-wa to throw it when the opponent is open or at a time that it doesn't let you get knocked ou...

Padejseuk Pitsanurachan - Old School Greatness (67 min)

Arjan Padejseuk is a wonderful entry into the Library, really special for me personally. He's a Silver/Golden Age fighter, won Fighter of the Year in 1979, and is one of only a few of fighters ever to defeat Dieselnoi in his prime (Wichannoi, Kaopong & Padejseuk). He was an adroit elbow fighter from that time, although as a well-rounded fighter rather than a specialist. His name means to "finish off an enemy in battle," and one of the greater things that the Preserve the Legacy Project ai...
