More Time For Slime

Let's take another look at Akello's slime development.  In the beginning when I started planning his chapter, I wasn't sure if I would need a formal monster sprite to stand alone against his human one but as I got deeper and deeper into development it started to become clear that he would need something more.  For one, his main menu screen looked quite bare without a secondary figure.

Atlas and I convened and we talked about increasing the amount of goo coming off him.

Akello's chapter is in its wrap-up phases and I'm (99%) confident I will be able to begin releasing to Patrons beginning February 14!  That also means Amir's chapter will be slated to go public during that time period! :D

Slime Time!

Akello's monster form is more... abstract than Amir's or Mori's so we really wanted to take it in a more flexible direction.

Akello Expressions!

WHEW with that big meeting out of the way I feel like I can finally focus on Akello's chapter 100% again.  I'm here with a look at Akello's facial development.  I asked Atlas to keep his expressions fairly subtle for the most part as Akello is GENERALLY a very calm person who's good at keeping calm under pressure.  I'm looking forward to being able to cycle through several of these to make conversations feel more animated.

Akello's Profile Card

Like Mori and Amir, its now time for Akello to have his own profile card as well!  Akello's color palette is super fun but it really took some work to get it at a point that I like.

Today I have some more Akello work for your perusal!

First, let's take a look at some sketches for Akello's second pose.  Now something I learned in Amir's chapter is that if we make the poses too different obviously then all the outfits need to be be drawn again which can very quickly build up into an unmanageable work load for just one artist.  Going into Akello's chapter this was one of the things I wanted to be sure I kept my eye on without sacrificing meaning...

Akello Main Menu Color Test

I do an abnormally large amount of work on color when I'm working on early parts of character chapters.  Here's some quick screencaps of what direction I'm working on for Akello!  For each character, I like when they have an "image color" or a color that represents them.  For Mori its teal and purple, for Amir it was rose and gold.  For Akello, I want to lean heavily into earthy tones with some strong shades of green.  Which hues specifically will depend on Atlas' fin...
