Developer's Journal #16

Hey everybody!  The last couple of weeks have been exhausting as I pushed to get the update out, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.  I really appreciate your patience as I ended up taking longer than I expected.  I also appreciate the feedback I've received so far, both the positive comments and those making suggestions for how I can improve in the next update.  I also very much appreciate those of you who have mentioned the game in other servers/forums.  We've s...

Poll for October 2022 Special Render

Hey all.  Going forward the special render polls will run from the 11th to the 20th of each month with the special render being posted prior to the end of the month.

In the last poll, I said you would have formally met the other two LI's by the time I posted a new poll.  I'm not sure why I said that, as I have also made it clear in other posts you would NOT be formally meeting them until Part Two.  That's neither the first nor last time I will say something dumb, unfortun...

Part One Release Announcement

Hey everybody.  I just posted download links for LDNA: Part One for Biggest Supporters.  All other supporters will receive links for the game in two days.  I will make it available to the public next week.

It's been three months and one week since I released the demo.  I've worked very hard on the game since then.  Here's a summary of the new content:

75+ minutes ...

Developer's Journal #15

Hey everybody.  I have been working as hard as I can on the game this week.  Two weeks ago I reported postworked renders at 748.  I'm now up to 1,005 with about twenty to render overnight.  Once those are done, we will be very, very close to being done.  There are only two things left.

The first is simple--I created an unlockable bonus image gallery with two images for this release.  One image is done, and I'll do the second tomorrow.

The second is no...

Hey everybody.  My target release dates remain October 10th (Biggest Supporters) and 12th (Supporters and Bigger Supporters).  I rendered two smaller scenes this week and I'm finishing up a third.  I also spent a lot of time this week poring over the renders and coding I've already finished to spot either little mistakes or things that weren't quite perfect, so at this point what I have looks pretty clean.  It's just a matter of powering through the remaining renders. &nbs...

Hey everybody!

Postworked renders now number 748, up from 678 last week.  The best estimate I can give is there are maybe 200 renders left to go.

The last couple of weeks I've been working on a small social event at Sean's house.  It's just about finished and I think you'll find it interesting as it peels back another layer of our MC's character.

One of the things I really hope I've accomplished is the creation of a complex, engaging MC.  The entire story revo...

Hello all.  The relatives left Tuesday so I was back in full-throttle mode on LDNA.  Post-worked still renders now number 678, up from 600 a week ago.

I've added a couple of very small instances in the update where, while talking to a witness, the player will be asked, basically, whether they have picked up on anything that might be a relevant clue to solving the murder of Amy Mall.  If the player responds in the affirmative, he or she can type in what the clue is.  ...

Poll for 9-22 Special Render

Hey all.  Here's my first monthly poll for Bigger and Biggest Supporters to choose the month's special render.  Bigger Supporters votes are worth one, Biggest Supporter votes are worth two.  Last month it was Sheriff Aghavni.  This month's options are below.  The special render will be released before the end of the month.

Note these special renders will not be lewds, but they will be sometimes fun, sometimes sexy images of the women of LDNA.  By the time I...

Hey everybody.  As I said last week, I am currently in the middle of a large family event and mostly not working on LDNA this weekend.  It's after midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning and I'm back with family tomorrow, but here's a quick update for LDNA this week.

Thanks to having Monday off for Labor Day, I was able to still have a pretty productive week.  The number of post-worked renders is now at exactly 600, up from 530 last week.

I also spent time this week ...

Hello my friends.

I spent this week mostly working on still renders.  The particular scene I was doing, Rockford and Aghavni driving, turned out to be a bit of a challenge.  I had anticipated this being an easy transitory part of the story and that I could get the renders done in a night or two.  But I didn't consider that when the characters are driving around in a car the background scenery has to constantly change, which ended up being a lot of work.  This and oth...

Hey everybody, hope you all had a nice week.

I am still working on the remaining scenes for Part One.  I didn't get as many renders done this week as I would like for a couple of reasons.  The first was that I was working with some assets that were VRAM heavy, so it was hard to queue up overnight renders.  The second reason I'll get to in a minute.  Still, I managed to finish with two smaller scenes pushing the total number of post-worked still renders for the update...

Good evening (or good morning, for my friends across the pond) to you all!  Here's my update:

My job job was hellish this week.  Notwithstanding, I finished work on the bar scene and after a month spent on just that scene I was glad to be done.  I am also very happy with the way it turned out.

If you recall, at the end of the demo Rockford and Aghavni made plans to visit a person of interest in the cold case.  That's the scene I'm working on now.  A...

Hello everyone.  Completed, post-worked renders for the bar scene have reached about 230.  I've got 27 renders queued up for tonight and maybe 15 more to do after that, and then it will be done (the bar scene, not the update).  I imagine this will probably end up being one of the biggest scenes in the game, if not the biggest.  Things should move faster once it's done.

If it wasn't obvious just based on the demo, I expect this to be a huge game.  Not necessarily...

Hello everyone.

I am still working on the same bar scene.  Total postwork completed renders for that scene are now at 168.  I redid the lighting on a number of the renders from last week, and most of them were one to three hour renders, so I lost a couple of days on that, but I am happy with the reworks.  There's still quite a bit left in this scene, but I'm at a point now in the dialogue where I'm able to reuse a lot of renders from earlier in the scene either in full or...

Hey guys!

Since the release of the demo 26 days ago, I've split time between reworking parts of the demo, learning how to animate, writing script, creating still renders, and promoting the game.  But this week I was able to spend most of my time on still renders.  So, even though I was working on the bar scene with a lot of characters and wonky lighting, leading to very long load and render times, I was still able to get rendering and postwork done on about 100 renders.  ...

Hello Everybody.  Work continues on the remainder of LDNA: Part One.  I've spent a lot of time this week--far more than I wanted, actually--on animating.  The animations still need some work, and so for the time being I'm refocusing on still renders so I don't fall behind.

The scene I'm currently working on has a lot of characters.  In the Demo there was a scene that took place on a basketball court with eleven characters.  That was a very demanding scene becaus...

Android & 0.01

Today I finished an Android package for LDNA and also repackaged the Demo version for both PC and Mac as version 0.01.  0.01 has no additional content over the "Demo" file, but I did implement a large number of render fixes which I've previously mentioned.  All files are now available for download if you happen to be interested.

Work continues on Leaving DNA Part One.  This week I faced a new frontier as I composed my first complex animation.  The published version of the Demo had only one simple animation, which was basically a camera pan of Jamie.  When planning this game I gave serious consideration to whether or not to include animations.  I have no animating experience and nobody likes bad animations.  But finally I decided every animator has to start somewhere.  So this week a lot ...

Hello all.  It's been almost one week since Leaving DNA was released.  There are already 13 reviews on that one site, and three ratings on Itch, all positive.  And with my Patreon up for only four days, there are already eight of you supporting me!

I expected to languish in obscurity for at least a couple of updates, so the response has been a very rewarding surprise.  The fact that anybody would choose to jump on this train, especially when all I've released is the ...

At the time I write this, I have no patrons and I'm basically talking to myself.  Leaving DNA was released on [that one site] about two-and-a-half days ago, Itch last night, and now the Patreon page has been active for a couple of hours.  So this is the beginning.

Up until about September of last year I had never heard of a visual novel, let alone played one.  But I happened across a couple of them and then starting looking for more.  Eventually that led me to [that ...
