I don't think of this as a mark against Ellen's game master skills. She's on the spot, focused on the characters, and basically had no time to come up with her own story.
Granted, I highly doubt that was a chicken in the original adventure guidelines, so we'll see how this whole "minor substitution" thing goes.

The idea in the first panel is that the players go along with the adventure hook to a point, effectively starting an adventure, then they can do whatever.
