Different Pencils, Different Styles

One thing that makes itself apparent from working with different tools, is that they can greatly affect how you draw. Anyway, you ever see those like unfinished renders of 3d animated movies when no one's got their textures on but all the phong and bezel and whatevers are in place so the lighting looks good? I guess this is the equivalent. There are some more passes with the lighting that needs to happen but the flats and the lines are good.

I don't have too much to say that hasn't been said in other posts these past few weeks. Thank you all for sticking with me. And for the new guys who've jumped in, I hope you get a few looks at things that you like. And I hope to see you all in September.

Apart from her head being like 3 times larger than it should be, this is one of the better drawings I've done all week. This week started rough for me and it's not much better. But I'll try to keep getting things done especially as the month winds up.

Here's more of that three color layer process. I've changed it a bit, and when I'm doing the final lineart layer, I'm working in blue underneath the sketch layers because it's easier to see if I'm overstepping things.

I don't often get to toot our horn, but this is one of those silly little stories we can only really do in Cassiopeia. It's the silliness of conquering a race of tiny adorable creatures to make a godzilla reference. It's the best.

We didn't have too much planned out for a race of tiny and easy to totally dominate adorable aliens. We knew we were kinda making a play off those Funko Pop figures, so running with that I took the big dot eyes and noseless faces. A mouth is too useful to have for expressing things. Something from the Archive

Early art of Enna, from Salamander. (Ya might remember, the comic we were working on with the knights and the fire and the trees.)

Anyway, figuring out this suit was a lot of fun, and probably one of the most useful things I did for making that comic make sense. In retrospect after drawing the comic for a dozen pages, I knew I wanted to alter some of the design to be more simple or to make more sense for some of the poses I was gonna use. But I'm still very happy with her overall design.

If I were being honest with myself, I think I'm getting a little bored of drawing appealing ladies standing around. Gotta branch out more. Maybe appealing ladies reading books. Or doing STEM projects.

I feel like I wish I got across a more festive attitude on this page, but I think there were some limits based on what I needed to get across on a basic level before I could embellish on the scene. In a way I wish I could do a crowd shot on every panel, but I also realize that I wouldn't be able to kill myself doing this page. If anything the previous page did a lot of the heavy lifting. But I still couldn't really get the town set up in the composition.

This is probably the roughest state you'll ever see one of these. But it might be slightly informative in how I've started moving back and forth between the layout/sketch/ink layers instead of completing each layer separately. I find this helps to fight boredom which can settle in when doing the same thing for a long time. And it helps the page feel more "done" and quicker to fight off discouragement.

Working on this one has been hellish. Mostly because of me just being sad for a couple weeks. The rough layout layers were really wonky. And going to the lineart before making sure those were good has hurt it. But it is what it is, and the page is late enough already. Gotta get it moving.

Peia Page Preview Part 2

The first three panels are done, the rest still need to be filled in.

So far the process I've chosen to do on this page was to go back to a more traditional paint by layer approach. No fancy layer masks or overlay colors. Just straight color painted onto each spot. I think I might have picked it because the page is going to be so bright.

One thing I really should do more of is color planning in advance. But whatever, I've survived this long without it. (I really should do more of...
